    Notes: Abstract. Direct illumination of the tunneling gap in an ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope with ultrashort pump-probe laser pulses may offer ultimate spatial and temporal resolution in surface experiments. The electronic bandwidth of the tunneling gap ( $〈$ 1 THz) does not limit the time resolution. Our experiments show that multiphoton photoelectron emission from the sample limits the application of this detection scheme at high laser fluence. However, a substrate specific pump-probe effect in the photoelectron yield with femtosecond transients is observed on Tantalum and on GaAs(110) surfaces.

    Notes: Abstract In the genus Schizosaccharomyces intracellular osidases and nitrite and nitrate reductases are revealed; particularly all the species possessing invertase, α-glucosidase and α-galactosidase. These characters underline the homogeneity of the genus. On the basis of osidases, nitrite and nitrate reductases results, 2 groups can be distinguished in this genus.

    Notes: Abstract The presence of intracellular osidases, nitrite and nitrate reductases, vitamin requirements and GC content in the DNA, have been investigated for in 18 species of Pichia.     Notes: Abstract The qualitative determination by paper chromatography and the quantitative determination by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) of the Coenzyme Q system have been investigated for in 23 species of the genus Pichia. We have adapted HPLC to the quantitative analysis of the Coenzyme Q system. We have found the presence of 2,3 or 4 ubiquinones in the same Coenzyme Q extract.

    Notes: Abstract The genusTrichosporon was revised using characters of morphology, ultrastructure, physiology, ubiquinone systems, mol% G+C of DNA, DNA/DNA reassociations and 26S ribosomal RNA partial sequences. A total of 101 strains was used, including all available type and authentic cultures of previously described taxa. Nineteen taxa could be distinguished, 15 of which having Q-9 coenzyme systems and 4 having Q-10. Sixteen previously described names were reduced to synonymy. One new species was described. The genus is characterized by the presence of arthroconidia. Few species possess further diagnostic morphological characters, such as the presence of appressoria, macroconidia or meristematic conidiation. The septa of two species were found to be non-perforate, while those of the remaining species contained dolipores at variable degrees of differentiation, with or without vesicular or tubular parenthesomes. All species were able to assimilate a large number of carbon compounds; visible CO2 production was absent. The genus was found to be fairly homogeneous on the basis of a phylogenetic analysis of partial 26S rRNA sequences, with the exception ofT. pullulans which proved to be unrelated. Most taxa were found to occupy well-defined ecological niches. Within the group of taxa isolated from humans, a distinction found be made between those involved in systemic mycoses and those which mainly caused public or non-public white piedras, respectively. One species was consistently associated with animals, while others came mainly from soil or water. One species was mesophilic and another psychrophilic.

    Notes: Abstract Family studies have shown that in some populations up to 75% of the variation of body mass index can be explained by genetic factors. However, in humans, no major obesity gene has been identified to date. In contrast, there are a number of genetically well defined animal models for obesity. In two of those models (ob/ob and db/db), defects in the same pathway are responsible for obesity. Recently, some evidence has been found for the OB gene also being involved in human obesity. In this study we investigated the potential role of the OB receptor (OBR) in the etiology of massive obesity in humans using familial linkage analyses and case-control association studies. The typing of two microsatellite markers (D1S198 and D1S209), flanking the OBR gene, in 256 sib pairs showed no evidence for linkage with obesity. In order to be able to detect small gene effects, association studies with a 3′-UTR insertion/deletion polymorphism were carried out. The results of these analyses remained non-significant (χ2 = 3.442, P = 0.18). However, subjects heterozygous for the insertion/deletion polymorphism showed a slight trend towards lower insulin values 30 min after an oral glucose load compared to homozygous individuals (P = 0.02). In summary, our results do not support a major role of the human OBR gene in the development of morbid obesity in our population.
