    Notes: Summary The major biliary metabolites of the mutagen, quercetin, the pro-mutagen rutin and taxifolin have been identified by EI-mass spectrometry, UV-spectroscopy and chromatographic methods as conjugates of the corresponding 3′-O-methyl ethers. The toxicological significance of these findings is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract  We have analyzed the Tribolium castaneum ortholog of the Drosophila homeotic gene Deformed (Dfd) and determined its expression pattern during embryogenesis in this beetle. Tc Deformed (Tc Dfd) is expressed in the blastoderm and the condensing germ rudiment in a region that gives rise to gnathal segments. During germ band extension Tc Dfd is expressed in the mandibular and maxillary segments, their appendages, and the dorsal ridge. Comparison of insect Dfd protein sequences reveals several highly conserved regions. To determine whether common molecular features reflect conserved regulatory functions we used the Gal4 system to express the Tribolium protein in Drosophila embryos. When Tc Dfd is expressed throughout embryonic ectoderm under the control of P69B, the beetle protein autoregulates the endogenous Dfd gene. In addition, the Drosophila proboscipedia gene (a normal target of Dfd) is ectopically activated in the antennal and thoracic segments. We also compared the ability of the beetle and fly proteins to rescue defects in Dfd – mutants by expressing each throughout the embryonic during embryogenesis. Both proteins rescued Dfd – defects to the same extent in that they each restore the development of mouth hooks and cirri, as well as cause gain-of-function abnormalities of posterior mouth parts. As before, pb was ectopically activated in the antennal segment. This is the first demonstration of the ability of a heterologous homeotic selector protein to directly regulate a target gene independent of an endogenous Drosophila autoregulatory loop.

    Notes: Abstract Feeding, growth and bioluminescence of the thecate heterotrophic dinoflagellate Protoperidinium huberi were measured as a function of food concentration for laboratory cultures grown on the diatom Ditylum brightwellii. Ingestion of food increased with food concentration. Maximum ingestion rates were measured at food concentrations of ∼600 μg C l-1 and were ∼0.7 μg C individual-1 h-1 (1.8 D. brightwelli cells individual-1 h-1). Clearance rates decreased asymptotically with increasing food concentration. Maximum clearance rates at low food concentration were ca. 23 μl ind-1 h-1, which corresponds to a volume-specific clearance rate of 5.9x105 h-1. Cell size of P huberi was highly variable, with a mean diameter of 42 μm, but no clear relationship between cell size and food concentration was evident. Specific growth rates increased with food concentration until maximum growth rates of ∼0.7 d-1 were reached at a food concentration of 400 μg C l-1 (∼1000 cells ml-1). Food concentrations as low as 10 μg C l-1 of D. brightwellii (∼25 cells ml-1) were able to support growth of P. huberi. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied with its nutritional condition and growth rate. Cells held without food lost their bioluminescence capacity in a matter of days. P. huberi raised at different food concentrations showed increased bioluminescence capacity, up to food concentration that supported maximum growth rates. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied over a diel cycle, and these rhythmic changes persisted during 48 h of continuous darkness, indicating that the rhythm was under endogenous control.

    Notes: Abstract A stereophotographic technique for determining size and relative position of free-swimming sharks is described and illustrated for schooling scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini). The method yields total length and nearest-neighbor, interindividual distance; and each of these dimensions is expressed as a function of the shark's distance into a school on the vertical and horizontal planes. Stereopairs of photographs were taken by an aligned, beam-mounted pair of cameras (Nikonos III). The scale to determine the length of a shark from the paired photographic images was obtained from the horizontal displacement between the images. Displacement was correlated with optical axis separation from photographs of a scaled staff at known distances from the camera. Image dimensions on the photographs were measured by projecting a scale onto the stage through a camera lucida. The precision of repeated measurements of a 50 cm section of a scaled staff at increasing distances from the cameras of 2, 4, and 8 m was ≦±5.0%. Lengths of the sharks ranged from 109 to 371 cm, with a median of 178 cm, for 3 offshore sites in the Gulf of California during July and August 1979. At one site, El Bajo Gorda, lengths increased with both distance from the camera and distance into the group; in contrast, the interindividual distances (head-to-head) did not vary with distance into the group and possessed a median of 232 cm.

    Notes: Abstract An experimental study has been performed of the carbon-14 enrichment achievable in the ultraviolet laser dissociation of mixtures of14CH2O and12CH2O. The14C:12C enrichment factor in the CO product has been measured at 352.2 nm as a function of laser linewidth, formaldehyde temperature and pressure, and degree of carbon-14 depletion. The enrichment decreases with an increase in each of these parameters; the highest enrichment, 1190, was measured at 0.02 cm−1, 303 K, 1 Torr and a14C depletion of 10%. The results are assessed in terms of their application to radiocarbon dating, in particular for groundwater dating required for nuclear waste disposal, and to the enrichment of14C operating wastes extracted from nuclear reactors to a level suitable for commercial sale.

    Notes: Abstract The ability to contour reinforced composites at specific points would allow these low modulus, high strength materials to be utilized in a wide variety of new applications. Contourable materials of this type would be especially suitable for orthopaedic applications such as internal fixation of fractures where plate removal due to stress shielding and bone resorption are major concerns. To this end, the high-temperature contourability of 30% short carbon-fibre-reinforced PEEK was investigated. The use of infrared radiation to heat this material to temperatures suitable for contouring was developed and refined into a protocol for heating and bending 12.4×6.4 mm injection-moulded flexural testing bars. To evaluate the heating, contouring and cooling effects of this processing on the material's mechanical and physical properties, five specimen groups were tested: control, extended heat only, cyclical heat only, repeated contouring, and repeated contouring-quenched. Each group's flexural properties, fracture toughness, post-contouring matrix crystallinity and extent of fibre-matrix wetout were monitored. The two heat only groups showed no significant changes in any properties compared to control. For the contoured groups, the quenched subgroup showed a minimal 0–9% decrease in all categories. The non-quenched group showed only a 0–6% change. The resilience of short carbon-fibre-reinforced, PEEK after severe thermo-mechanical cycling is convincing evidence of this material's suitability for structural applications, especially in which contourability and fast processing are required. This study demonstrates the thermoductility of CFR PEEK.

    Notes: Thermal wave interferometry is a non-destructive inspection technique that has been used successfully for the assessment of coating thickness. The purpose of this paper is to present an evaluation of the suitability of the technique for the measurement and characterization of hydroxyapatite coatings on commercially available prosthetic hip stems. The results indicate a good correlation between the coating thickness values obtained using the interferometry technique and measurements made using optical microscopy of sectioned stems. In addition the results confirm that thermal wave interferometry can be used to accurately assess the changes in coating thickness on samples with a complex geometry.

    Notes: Hydroxyapatite coatings have been used for many years on dental and prosthetic implants to provide a biocompatible surface for long-term fixation of the implant to bone. In this study two thermal spraying processes, air plasma spraying (APS) and a high velocity oxy fuel process (CDS) have been employed to produce hydroxyapatite coatings. An X-ray diffraction technique (XRD) has been applied to measure the residual stresses in thermal sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings. It has been shown that such stresses are sensitive to spraying parameters and that the newer high velocity oxy fuel spraying process results in lower residual stresses than the conventional air plasma spraying process. Heat treatment of the coating has been shown to significantly reduce the residual stress in the coating.

    Notes: Abstract A model of majority rule is developed in which each of a finite number of generations votes on a redistribution of income between itself and the other generations. In voting, each generation expresses tastes for its own income and for the distribution of income across generations. The model is then used to derive the conditions under which discounting is justified — namely those conditions for which the majority rule exhibits a positive marginal rate of time preference. It is demonstrated that when each generation is wealthier than those preceding it, the parameters representing the taste for income equality must be relatively high for the majority rule to exhibit a positive marginal rate of time preference.
