Notes: The growth and reproduction complex contains recessive genes (grc) which influence body weight and gonadal development. Homozygous males are sterile, and they have an arrest of spermatogenesis at the primary spermatocyte stage. Homozygous females are fertile but have a reduced reproductive capacity. The data presented in this paper show that the latter defect is associated with a decrease in the relative number of secondary ovarian follicles and an increase in the number of atretic follicles. This finding indicates that most of the primary follicles do not mature properly. Thus, the genetic defect in gametogenesis controlled by the grc appears to occur at the same stage of development in both females and males.

Notes: The contribution of cytochrome and alternative pathways to respiration during soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Chippewa 64] seed formation and maturation was measured by oxygen consumption of embryonic axis and cotyledon tissues and of mitochondria isolated from immature seeds. Respiration rates (dry weight basis) declined duing the last month of seed maturation. Cyanide sensitive respiration (cytochrome pathway) accounted for 80 to 90% of total oxygen consumption throughout seed formation and maturation. The proportion of the total respiration resistant to 1 mM cyanide and inhibited by 1 mM salicylhydroxamic acid (alternative pathway) did not exceed 6%. A residual oxygen consumption, accounting for 5 to 15% of total respiration, persisted in the presence of both inhibitors. Likewise, virtually no alternative respiration was found in mitochondria prepared from immature seeds. The alternative respiratory pathway seems absent during soybean seed formation and maturation regardless of whether grown in the greenhouse or field.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Over 100 sedimentary formations and groups are known from the epicontinental to continental Mesozoic (“Oriente Andino” sensu H.Bürgl) in the Andean region of Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. These lithostratigraphic (or facial) complexes are attached to 6 magnafacies-units which follow each other chronologically, thereby clearly evidencing a uniform paleogeographic-sedimentary development in the mentioned areas, although the geological structure of the Western respectively Coastal Cordilleras of the North (Colombia, Ecuador) is fundamentally different from that of the Southern ones (Peru, Chile).

Notes: Abstract A structural study of the old globular cluster NGC 1806 in the LMC has been carried out by star counts onB- andV-ESO 3.6 m telescope plates with three different limiting magnitude levels. The star density distribution was obtained directly from the surface strip count function with the Plummer formalism and the generalized Schuster law according to Lohmann. This yields beside the central density the structural parametern and the characteristic length parameterR 0 for each individual colour and magnitude level. The results show that the blue stellar content of NGC 1806 — the horizontal branch stars — is more concentrated towards the cluster center than the red giant and subgiant objects. Also such a dynamical mass segregation is observed for the red giants compared with the subgiants.

Notes: Abstract HEAO-B (Einstein) satellite measurements with the Imaging Proportional Counter revealed the W UMa binary system TZ Bootis as an X-ray source. It is estimated that the luminosity ratioL x/Lvof this system is about 10−3.8 indicating that TZ Bootis is in the transition region between A- and W-type W UMa systems.

Notes: Abstract During a seventeen day period an A. niger fungus ball evolved within a healed tuberculous cavity of a patient. Symptoms were a cough with a chocolate brown expectoration and dyspnea. The patient died and necropsy was performed. Crystals of calcium oxalate were deposited in the cavity lining and in the adjacent tissue of the lung. Fibrosis, mononuclear infiltration and intraalveolar purulent exudate were seen in these tissues. Some small vessels presented recent thrombosis and deposition of calcium oxalate. The bronchus connected with the cavity presented a disrupted epithelial layer, edema, polymorphonuclear infiltration and birefringent crystals. Scattered areas of tubular atrophy, glomerular sclerosis and lymphoid infiltration were seen in the cortex of the kidney. Oxalate crystals were also seen within the renal tubuli.

Notes: Abstract It is proposed that the rotational angular momentum of the lower Main Sequence stars determines the intensity of their magnetic spot activity. As a consequence of this feedback coupling, the stellar rotation and the activity decay exponentially by magnetic braking of the induced stellar flare- and wind-activity. Therefore, the Sun should have rotated much faster and must have shown a very enhanced activity in its early history. This strong solar activity in the past could have had influenced the evolution of terrestrial life, and may explain the stagnation of maritime life for about 2×109 yr, the diversification of species during the Cambrian formation, and the land conquest by life in the upper Silurian system.
