    Notes: Summary Lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) derived from two patients identified as ataxia telangiectasia (AT), two obligate AT heterozygotes and two controls (healthy subjects with no known genetic disease or relationship to AT patients) were compared with respect to the induction of chromosomal breaks by acute and chronic γ-irradiation. Although there was a considerable increase in the frequency of chromosomal breaks per cell in the LCLs of AT patients resulting from acute irradiation, the small increase occurring in the LCLs of the AT heterozygotes made it difficult to distinguish them from the controls. Following chronic γ-irradiation, however, the frequency of chromosomal breaks per cell in the LCLs of the AT heterozygotes occupied a significantly distinct position from that of the controls. These observations suggested that the use of chronic irradiation may be a better choice in the cytogenetic characterization of AT heterozygotes.

    Notes: Summary N-vinyl 2-pyrrolidone (VP) / Acrylonitrile (AN) copolymeric hydrogels were synthesized by using γ-radiation and amidoximated for the purpose of uranyl ion adsorption. Optimum amidoximation time was determined by following the uranyl ion, UO2 2+, adsorption capacity. The adsorption of amidoximated copolymers was studied from different uranyl ion solutions (1000–1850 ppm). The results of all adsorption studies showed that the interaction between UO2 2+ and amidoxime groups comply with Langmuir type isotherm. The adsorption capacity was found as 0.54 g UO2 2+ /g dry amidoximated copolymeric hydrogels. From the stoichiometric calculations, it was found that the bonding between UO2 2+ and amidoxime groups is 1 to 4.

    Notes: Abstract A model of price-induced innovation is presented incorporating long-run prices as arguments in the production function serving the role of stimulating firms to seek innovations. The empirical application examines the production structure and technological progress of the U.S. food processing and distribution sector for the period 1948–1991. The empirical model separates scarcity, innovation, and exogenous technical change responses in analyzing the Morishima elasticities for input combinations and multifactor input biases. The results suggest significant structural changes occurring in the food processing and distribution sector since 1980. Focusing on multifactor input bias, results suggest that there are no wide changes in technical change patterns over the last forty years. However, Morishima elasticity results suggest a more varied pattern of technical change between inputs. The price-induced technical progress has a dominant contribution on input decisions compared with the exogenous technical change.

    Notes: Abstract The elimination tree plays an important role in many aspects of sparse matrix factorization. The height of the elimination tree presents a rough, but usually effective, measure of the time needed to perform parallel elimination. Finding orderings that produce low elimination is therefore important. As the problem of finding minimum height elimination tree orderings is NP-hard, it is interesting to concentrate on limited classes of graphs and find minimum height elimination trees for these efficiently. In this paper, we use clique trees to find an efficient algorithm for interval graphs which make an important subclass of chordal graphs. We first illustrate this method through an algorithm that finds minimum height elimination for chordal graphs. This algorithm, although of exponential time complexity, is conceptionally simple and leads to a polynomial-time algorithm for finding minimum height elimination trees for interval graphs.

    Notes: Abstract A gram-positive strain identified as Arthrobacter globiformis CECT 4500, tolerant to up to 1 M nitrate, was isolated from the grounds of a munitions factory. Under strict aerobic conditions, this bacterium used a wide variety of C-sources to obtain the energy required for growth, which took place when the nitrate concentration in the medium was below150 mM. Cells of this bacterium growing in the absence of nitrate were seen as individual cells or forming pairs,whereas cells grown in the presence of nitrate formed short filaments. With ethylene glycol as the C-source, optimal conditions for the full nitrate removal by Arthrobacter were established under laboratory conditions with wastewaters from the synthesis of dinitroethylene glycol.

    Notes: Abstract This paper takes a fresh look at the application of quadratic penalty functions to linear programming. Recently, Madsen et al. (Ref. 1) described a continuation algorithm for linear programming based on smoothing a dual l 1-formulation of a linear program with unit bounds. The present paper is prompted by the observation that this is equivalent to applying a quadratic penalty function to the dual of a linear program in standard canonical form, in the sense that both approaches generate continuous, piecewise-linear paths leading to the optimal solution set. These paths lead to new characterizations of optimal solutions in linear programming. An important product of this analysis is a finite penalty algorithm for linear programming closely related to the least-norm algorithm of Mangasarian (Ref. 2) and to the continuation algorithm of Madsen et al. (Ref. 1). The algorithm is implemented, and promising numerical results are given.

    Notes: Abstract.  A differential pulse voltammetric method for the determination of nitrate has been described, which is applicable to the analysis of natural water samples with nitrate levels greater than 2.8 × 10−6 M. A reduction peak for the nitrate ions at a freshly copper plated glassy carbon electrode was observed at about −0.50 V vs Ag ∣AgCl∣KClsatd electrode in a solution of 2.0 × 10−2 M Cu2+, 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1.0 × 10−3 M KCl and exploited for analytical purposes. The working linear range was established by regression analysis and found to extend from 2.8 ×10−6 M to 8.0 × 10−5 M. The proposed method was applied for the determination of nitrate in natural waters. The detection limit of the method was 2.8 × 10−6 M and the sensitivity was 0.9683 A·L/mol. The possible interferences by some ions such as phosphate, nitrite and some halides were determined and found to lead to shifts of the peak position and increasing the peak heights.
