Notes: Abstract The structure and evolution of populations of Squilla mantis (Crustacea: Stomatopoda) have been studied, and the statistical techniques used are discussed. Population studies were performed by multivariate analysis. Thirty-three monthly samples comprising 20 length classes of males and females were examined. Males and females display evolutionary cycles: each cycle begins in June/July and proceeds through a succession of evolution and eventual regression, the later being particularly marked every 2 years.

Notes: Abstract The dye Erythrosine B (which gives room-temperature phosphorescence, RTF) has been covalently bound to a silica-based amino-functionalized exchanger. The resulting material turned out to be extremely useful as a luminescent probe for oxygen. The photochemical properties and the analytical performance of the RTF probe have been studied by use of a gas flow-injection analysis system, which incorporates a convenient exponential dilution chamber for gas sample introduction. The possible origin of the non-linear Stern-Volmer quenching response observed is thoroughly discussed in terms of the quenching and lifetimes. The proposed sensing material is particularly suitable for measuring oxygen in gas mixtures at extremely low concentrations. The detection limit attained was 0.00006% (0.6 ppm) of oxygen in dry argon (making the system one of the more sensitive optosensors for oxygen published so far). A typical precision of ± 0.2%, at the 0.025% oxygen level, was achieved. Response times were less than 2 s for full signal change and no hysteresis effects were noticed. A possible mechanism for the observed oxygen RTF quenching in the new sensing material is proposed.

Notes: Summary Two reciprocal balanced translocations 46,XY,t(9;13)(p23;q21) and 46,XX,t(13;21)(q21;q21), identified by RFA- and GTG-banding, are presented along with a complete study of both families. In the second case a 3:1 segregation is associated with an unbalanced 2:2 segregation, as demonstrated in the two surviving sons: one with interchange trisomy 21 and the other with partial trisomy 13 and partial monosomy 21. This suggests that the presence of this translocation, and possibly of other translocations involving morphologically similar chromosomes, could signify a high risk of having chromosomal disorders in offspring.

Notes: Summary We studied a family in which three of the members present one chromosome 6 with an isochromatid gap at the band 6q15 level. Studies of the chromosomes by various banding techniques suggested that the secondary constriction represents a stalk from an acrocentric chromosome inserted into 6q15. The possible influence of the abnormal localization is considered.

Notes: Summary A karyotype with six de novo autosomal abnormalities in chromosomes 2, 4, 9, 10, 12, and 13 was identified in a 7-year-old boy with mental retardation and other minor malformations. The G-and C-banding techniques revealed an equilibrated translocation between autosomes 2 and 4 and between autosomes 9 and 13. One chromosome 10 has lost genetic material from its short arms, probably because of an interstitial deletion. An unidentified chromosomal fragment has become inserted in the long arms of an autosome 12. The G bands demonstrate that genetic material inserted in the autosome 12 is not the genetic material deleted from the autosome 10. The propositus presents clinical features similar to the reported cases with 10p-syndrome. Nevertheless it is not possible to establish the influence of the genetic material inserted in autosome 12 on the propositus' phenotype.

Notes: Summary Two cases of pericentric inversion of chromosome 12 are presented, one 46,XX,inv(12)(p13;q11) and the other 47,XX,+21,inv(12)(p13;q13). In both cases one of the parents was also a heterozygotic carrier of the inversion. These inversions were detected among 4035 cytogenetic analyses carried out in patients with psychosomatic retardation and/or malformations (357 with a Down phenotype) and in patients with histories of miscarriages, sterility, or growth failure. In cases studied from a review of the literature together with our own we found that among 3235 cases of Down syndrome there were 7 patients with trisomy 21 and inherited balanced reciprocal translocation involving chromosomes other than pair 21. The frequent participation of some chromosomes in these balanced reciprocal translocations, above all those of group A (1–3), suggests that these and probably other rearrangements could make the segregation of chromosome 21 easier.

Notes: Abstract The substitution of Y by Zr in the YBa2Cu3O7−δ has been investigated. A structural study has been performed in samples with nominal composition Y1−x Zr x Ba2Cu3O7−δ following different preparation procedures by means of X-ray powder diffraction and ZrK-edge EXAFS spectroscopy. This work demonstrates that Zr does not replace Y in the YBa2Cu3O7−δ structure, and a multiphase system is obtained. Magnetic and electrical measurements performed over these samples are in agreement with this structural description.

Notes: Abstract A feeding experiment was conducted on gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) broodstock to investigate the incidence of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) dietary deficiencies on the lipid composition of female liver, gonads and eggs, in relation to spawning quality. Broodstock were fed a control (C) diet or a n-3 HUFA deficient (D) but linolenic acid rich diet. After 20 weeks of feeding, the results showed that levels of total neutral (TNL) and total polar (TPL) lipids of female gonads and eggs were independent of diet. However the fatty acid composition of phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylinositol (PI) of female liver, gonads and eggs in the two groups of fish showed marked differences, reflecting the influence of fatty acid levels in the broodstock diets. This influence was even higher in TNL than in the phospholipid classes examined. In fish fed n-3 HUFA deficient diet, fatty acid composition of TNL of female gonads and eggs reflected the diet more than liver. A higher egg production in broodstock fed C diet (1.8% n-3 HUFA in diet) was extended to spawning quality such as percentages of fertilised and hatched eggs.
