Notes: Summary A new rapid method for measuring intra-cellular water content by gas chromatography and an isotopic (3H-sucrose) technique is described. Water content of circulating red cells was revealed to be 71.26±0.31%. Intra-cellular water content increased to 102.9% of its original value following addition of 3 volumes of acid-citrate-dextrose (ACD) to 20 volumes of blood.

Notes: Abstract Phylogenetic relationships among the seven species of deep-sea giant clams Calyptogena (Bivalvia: Vesicomyidae) collected around Japan were examined using parts of nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial genes for cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and cytochrome oxidase III (COIII) and the encoded amino acid sequences. The seven species were C. soyoae (Sagami Bay), C. fausta (Suruga Bay), C. kaikoi (Nankai Trough), C. nautilei (Nankai Trough), C. phaseoliformis (Japan Trench), C. solidissima (Minami-Ensei Knoll, Okinawa Trough) and Calyptogena sp. (Iheya Ridge, Okinawa Trough). A clear phylogenetic split was observed between one group of three species (C. kaikoi, C. phaseoliformis and C. fausta) and the remaining species. This clustering corresponds to the two previously described subgenera within the genus Calyptogena (Calyptogean and Ectenagena) with the exception of the placement of C. nautilei, which had been placed in the subgenus Ectenagena. Genetic distances between two haplotypes of C. soyoae were 0.043 for the COI region and 0.055 for the COIII region, and three amino acid substitutions were detected with the COIII region. Calyptogena sp. from the Iheya Ridge could be distinguished from one of the two haplotypes (type A) of C. soyoae by only a single nucleotide substitution, a result that suggests that Calyptogena sp. of the Iheya Ridge diverged from C. soyoae after the two haplotypes had diverged, and it is now isolated from C. soyoae in Sagami Bay.

Notes: Abstract The pilchards (genus Sardinops), one of the major components of the world's harvest of fishes, is distributed sporadically in the temperate zone on a global scale. Mitochondrial DNA variation in 95 pilchards from nine worldwide localities in five current systems was examined using ten restriction enzymes. Although several opinions have been proposed on the global population structure of the genus Sardinops, our results clearly rejected the hypothesis of gene flow among geographically distant populations on a global scale. Results indicate that the Japanese pilchards and the Australian and South African pilchards were derived from the eastern Pacific populations, following the speciation of Sardinops in the Pacific, after the formation of the Isthmus of Panama. An intermixing of the northeastern and southeastern Pacific populations during the Pleistocene glacial maxima is suggested from their genetic affinities.

Notes: Abstract. In this study, the pulsed laser ablation of RuO2 and SrRuO3 (SRO) is investigated by observing the fluorescence from excited atoms in the plume by using a framing streak camera. Vaporization, phase explosion and boiling are suggested to play the main roles in the processes for the interaction between the laser beam and target. Collisions and adiabatic expansion are also suggested before particles move forward with shifted Maxwellian spatial distribution. In O2 pressure, numerous collisions between fast and slow atoms occur and result in the exchange of speeds. The structural and electrical (conductivity and work-function) properties of RuO2 and SRO thin films are measured. Epitaxial SRO growth was obtained at growth temperatures down to 350 °C. Ferroelectric and high- dielectric thin-film capacitors with RuO2 or SRO thin film electrode are also studied.

Notes: Abstract Ultrafast optical response in the films of poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DT) and blue-and red-phase polydiacetylenes (PDA-4BCMU) has been investigated by femtosecond absorption and picosecond luminescence spectroscopies. Several nonlinear optical processes, i.e., hole burning, Raman gain, inverse Raman scattering, and induced-frequency shift, have been observed. The relaxation processes from photoexcited free excitons to self-trapped excitons (STEs) has been observed. The time constant is estimated as 140±40 fs in the blue-phase PDA-4BCMU and 100±50 fs in P3DT. The generated unthermalized STEs thermalize with the time constant of about 1 ps. The STEs in the blue-phase PDA-4BCMU decay exponentially with lifetime of 1.6±0.1 ps at 290 K and 2.1±0.2 ps at 10 K. The decay curves in the red-phase PDA-4BCMU and P3DT are not single exponential but can be fitted to biexponential functions with time constants of slightly shorter than 1 ps and about 5 ps. These two decay time constants correspond to relaxations to the ground state, respectively, from the free exciton and unthermalized STE and from the thermalized STE.

Notes: Abstract Transparent barium titanate (BaTiO3) wet gels synthesized by sol-gel processing using high-concentration Ba,Ti-alkoxide solution (1.0 mol/l) were subjected to optical measurements, X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscope observations. A systematic shift of the optical absorption edge was observed for the transparent BaTiO3 wet gels shrinking during aging at 30 and 50°C, while no shift was observed for the wet gels aged at 5°C. The crystallinity and crystallite size of the gels increased with increasing aging time and temperature. The shift of the optical absorption edge of the BaTiO3 gels during aging was found to have a close relation to an increase in the crystallite size of the gels.
