Notes: Summary Reproducing females ofOncopeltus fasciatus which were treated with exogenous makisterone A and 20-hydroxyecdysone laid eggs with considerably elevated ecdysteroid contents. The early embryonic development was markedly accelerated when the mother was treated with makisterone A, whereas 20-hydroxyecdysone had no influence.

Notes: Antidot lattices were fabricated by atomic force lithography using local oxidation. High quality finite 20×20 lattices are demonstrated with periods of 300 nm. The low-temperature magnetoresistance shows well developed commensurability oscillations as well as a quenching of the Hall effect around zero magnetic field. In addition, we find B-periodic oscillations superimposed on the classical commensurability peaks at temperatures as high as 1.7 K. These observations indicate the high electronic quality of our samples. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Pseudomonas aeruginosa was recognized as the causative organism of an epidemic disease occurring in a laboratory breed ofOncopeltus fasciatus. The infection probably occurs peroral and is favoured by high temperature and humidity.Pseudomonas aeruginosa destroys the fat body of the bug.

Notes: Summary The localization and regional distribution of insulin-like immunoreactivity (IRI) was studied in human brain autopsy material using the indirect immunofluorescence technique. A positive reaction for IRI could be observed in many neurons of the hypothalamus, the hippocampus, corpus amygdaloideum, medulla oblongata (especially within the nuclei of cranial nerves IX, X and XII), and the cerebral cortex, whereas the cerebellar cortex was lacking in immunohistochemically detectable insulin-like material. No nerve fibres containing polypeptides could be revealed. Additionally, the inuslin content of various brain regions was estimated by radioimmunosassay. Insulin concentrations in human nervous tissue were found to be elevated in comparison to blood plasma levels.

Notes: Summary Using an indirect immunofluorescence technique the distribution of insulin was mapped in brains of Wistar strain rats and mice. Insulin immunoreactivity was found to be widely distributed throughout mouse CNS, whereas in rat brain a restriction of immunoreactive material to cerebral blood vessels and ependymal cells and/or tanycytes of the brain ventricles was observed. In radioimmunological studies the amount of insulin (IRI) was estimated for different brain areas (cerebral cortex, brain stem, cerebellum, hippocampus, thalamus and hypothalamus). In the case of Wistar rats very low levels of IRI were found. On the contrary, the same regions in mouse brain contained considerably greater amounts of IRI. The comparison between histochemical and biochemical data revealed a good correlation. It is concluded that part of the insulin measured by radioimmunoassay is associated with neuronal structures.

Notes: Summary It has been tested whether juvenile hormone plays a role in the larval-adult transformation of lateral oviducts in the milkweed bug. The transformation is ecdysteroid-dependent, as was reported previously2. Application of precocene or juvenile hormone III proved that the absence of juvenile hormone is required.

Notes: Summary This paper summarizes the fundamentals and describes advances in the vibrating probe, a tool that was developed and introduced into biological research byJaffe andNuccitelli in 1974. The improvements reported are concerned on the one hand with the construction, micropositioning and maintenance of the probe itself and, on the other hand, with the origin of artifacts and possible ways to avoid or, at least, to detect and monitor them. The advances in construction and the elucidation of possible artifacts may help extend the usefulness of this unique tool in investigations of ionic currents which cells and tissues drive through themselves during development and movement.

Notes: Summary 1. Active prothoracic glands and oenocytes of last larval stage are both characteristized by well-developed smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Prothoracic glands also show plasma membrane infoldings, but not oenocytes which contain a large number of pleomorphic vesicles. 2. The fine structure of embryonic oenocytes corresponds after blastokinesis with that of active larval and adult cells. Thus, an activity in the late embryo can be assumed. Embryonic prothoracic glands reveal no signs of activity: smooth and rough ER are absent. The subcellular structure resembles that of organ anlagen, i.e. not yet fully differentiated tissue. Hormone synthesis is not likely. 3. Ecdysone titer was determined throughout embryonic development and in mature adults. Although prothoracic glands break down during adult ecdysis, imagines contain in the Calliphora-bioassay active factors: females 0.9 CU/g and males 0.5 CU/g. As sites of synthesis the oenocytes are suggested. 4. A relatively high ecdysone titer of 7 CU/g is measured in newly deposited eggs. The hormone is presumably of maternal origin. Subsequent to blastokinesis the hormone content increases dramatically up to about 180 CU/g, apparently due to endocrine function of the embryo. Oenocytes are proposed as the source of ecdysone during late embryonic development. 5. The function of ecdysone during early and advanced embryogenesis, especially in view of “embryonic molts”, is discussed.

Notes: Summary Ornithine decarboxylase was localized immunohistochemically in paraffin sections of prostate glands of the rat using Sternberger's PAP technique. Two types of immunoreactive cells were detected in the gland epithelium: strongly positive ones and weakly positive ones. Unreactive cells were also present. The functional role of the enzyme in the secretory process of the glands is discussed in the light of these findings.
