    Notes: Abstract The Taiwan Oscillation Network (TON) is a ground-based network to measure solar intensity oscillations to study the internal structure of the Sun. K-line full-disk images of 1000 pixels diameter are taken at a rate of one image per minute. Such data would provide information onp-modes withl as high as 1000. The TON will consist of six identical telescope systems at proper longitudes around the world. Three telescope systems have been installed at Teide Observatory (Tenerife), Huairou Solar Observing Station (near Beijing), and Big Bear Solar Observatory (California). The telescopes at these three sites have been taking data simultaneously since October of 1994. Anl – v diagram derived from 512 images is included to show the quality of the data.

    Notes: Abstract Glucocorticoids regulate the expression of many liver-specific genes via glucocorticoid receptors. The presence of glucocorticoid receptors in liver has been reported in many mammalian species but not in nude mice. In the present study, we demonstrate the presence of specific glucocorticoid receptors in nude mouse liver. The binding of ligands to these receptors could be completely inhibited by RU486, and partially blocked by hydrocortisone and progesterone, whereas estrogen and testosterone had no effect. Hydrocortisone down-regulated the level of glucocorticoid receptors in livers of nude mice and correspondingly enhanced the activities of tyrosine aminotransferase and γ-glutamyltransferase. Our results indicate that glucocorticoid receptors in nude mouse liver are specific, fully functional, and present at levels 28.5-fold higher than in the liver of normal inbred mice. We suggest that the nude mouse is a valuable model for studies of hepatic glucocorticoid action and may provide a clue to a putative hepatic-thymic interaction.

    Notes: Abstract Protein kinases play key roles in cellular functions. They are involved in many cellular functions including; signal transduction, cell cycle regulation, cell division, and cell differentiation. Alterations of protein kinase by gene amplification, mutation or viral factors often induce tumor formation and tumor progression toward malignancy. The identification and cloning of kinase genes can provide a better understanding of the mechanisms of tumorigenesis as well as diagnostic tools for tumor staging. In this study, we have used degenerated polymerase-chain-reaction primers according to the consensus catalytic domain motifs to amplify protein kinase genes (protein-tyrosine kinase, PTK, and protein-serine/threonine kinase, PSK) from human stomach cancer cells. Following amplification, the protein kinase molecules expressed in the gastric cancer cells were cloned into plasmid vectors for cloning and sequencing. Sequence analysis of polymerase-chain-reaction products resulted in the identification of 25 protein kinases, including two novel ones. Expression of several relevant PTK/PSK genes in gastric cancer cells and tissues was further substantiated by RT-PCR using gene-specific primers. The identification of protein kinases expressed or activated in the gastric cancer cells provide the framework to understand the oncogenic process of stomach cancer.

    Notes: Abstract Experimental infection with enterovirus type 71 (EV71) induced death in neonatal mice in an age- and dose-dependent manner. The mortality rate was 100% following intraperitoneal inoculation 1-day-old ICR mice and this gradually decreased as the age at the time of inoculation increased (60% in 3-day-old mice and no deaths occurred in mice older than 6 days of age). A lethal dose greater than 108 PFU was necessary. Lethargy, failure to gain weight, rear limb tremors and paralysis were observed in the infected mice before death. EV71 was isolated from various tissues of the dead mice. Using a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction technique with a specific primer pair, a 332-bp product was detected in the tissues that produced a culture positive for EV71. Protection against EV71 challenge in neonatal mice was demonstrated following passive transfer of serum from actively immunized adult mice 1 day after inoculation with the virus. Pups from hyperimmune dams were resistant to EV71 challenge. Additionally, maternal immunization with a formalin-inactivated whole-virus vaccine prolonged the survival of pups after EV71 lethal challenge.

    Notes: Abstract To understand the allele frequency of the G1691A mutation of the coagulation factor V gene (factor V Leiden) in Chinese, 618 Chinese individuals, including 54 cases with venous thrombosis, were analyzed. Only one case in the control group was heterozygous for the 1691G allele and the 1691A allele. Our data suggest that the factor V Leiden is rare in Chinese.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of processing parameters on the microstructure and oxidation resistance of silicon carbide (SiC) coated carbon-carbon (C-C) composites were investigated. C-C composites were made from plain woven carbon cloths and phenolic derived carbon matrices in the laboratory. Pressureless reaction sintering has been used to apply SiC coating to C-C composites using epoxy resin and silicon powder as the precursor. Results showed that the oxidation resistance of C-C composites was enhanced by coating with SiC. The pressureless reaction sintering process exhibits good processability. β-SiC was formed after heat treatment at 1800 °C and the α-SiC formed after heat treatment at 2200 °C. The SiC coated C-C composites exhibit good oxidation resistance at 1000 °C for 100 h under the test conditions.

    Notes: Abstract The hexaruthenium cluster compound Ru6(μ3-H)(CO)15[C5H4(SiMe3)] (2), possessing two μ4-η2-CO ligands and with the Ru[C5H4(SiMe3)] fragment located at the apex of the central tetrahedral framework, was prepared in low yield by refluxing a toluene solution of C5H5(SiMe3) with excess Ru3(CO)12. This unique complex was characterized by spectroscopic methods and by X-ray structural analysis. The possible mechanism leading to its formation is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) method was utilized to investigate the dynamic mechanical properties of the carbon-phenolic composite, and of carbon-carbon (C/C) composites carbonized at 1000°C, and graphitized at 2200°C. The measurements were performed in the temperature range 50–450°C. Results show that the carbon-phenolic composite has the highest storage modulus, while the carbonized C/C composites possess higher storage modulus than the graphitized C/C composite. The storage moduli of carbonized and graphitized C/C composite do not change significantly in the test temperature range. The tan δ, loss factor, of carbonized C/C composites increases 59.5% during the tests from 50 to 450°C, and that of the graphitized C/C decreases 9.74% in the same temperature range; graphitized C/C shows the highest tan δ at 50 °C. The carbon-phenolic composite shows a damping peak at 250 °C, which is probably due to the transition from glassy state to rubbery state of the phenolic matrix. The higher tan δ of the graphitized C/C composite may be due to matrix graphitization, fibre-matrix debonding and crack formation, which were observed on the micrographs.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of the fabrication parameters during carbonization and densification processes on the mechanical properties and the microstructure of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites were investigated. The C/C composites were made by using phenolic resin as precursor and two-dimensional carbon fabrics as reinforcements for the first carbonization. The effects of heating rate and heat-treatment temperature during the initial carbonization process on the properties of C/C composites are presented. Further densification treatment was completed by chemical vapour infiltration (CVI) and a liquid-resin impregnation process. The CVI route was found to be more efficient than the resin-impregnation process. The interlayer spacing of C/C composites did not change after resin re-impregnation for several times. However, the interlayer spacing of the C/C composites was reduced when the processing temperature in the CVI process was increased. Higher flexural strength and flexural modulus were obtained because the densities of the composites were enhanced either by the chemical vapour infiltration process or by the resin-impregnation route. The variation in thickness of the CVI deposited carbon within the preformed composite was studied and the morphology of the fracture surface of the C/C composites was also examined.
