Notes: Summary The profile of action in animals of CQP 201-403, a novel 8α-amino-ergoline, is in most aspects that of a very potent dopaminomimetic, both as a prolactin secretion inhibitor, and at the levels of the CNS and the cardiovascular system. Qualitatively CQP 201-403 differs slightly from bromocriptine and apomorphine in its effects on the CNS (no influence on serotonin metabolism in the rat cortex; induction of masculine mounting behavior in rats) and the cardiovascular system of the dog (reflex tachycardia in response to a blood-pressure fall). In man the new compound proved to be highly active in lowering prolactin serum levels and to be more potent than bromocriptine (Parlodel®).

Notes: Abstract Monolithically clamped bridge-on-diaphragm (BOD) structures for pressure sensor applications were fabricated by means of Nd: YAG-laser micromachining and anisotropic KOH-etching techniques. The pressure/frequency-dependence of the BOD structures was measured by acoustical resonance excitation and optical detection of the microbridge and applying an external pressure between-0.8 bar and+1 bar to the diaphragm. In this vacuum/atmospheric pressure range the pressure/frequency-characteristic is quite linear with a sensitivity of about 4.5 kHz/bar and a fundamental bridge resonance frequency of 82 kHz. Extensive finite-element modelling has been carried out to optimize the geometrical dimensions of the BOD structures with respect to maximum sensitivity and pressure range. Using the same BOD structure layout it is possible to realize pressure sensors with applications ranging from 0.5 to 12 bar by only varying the thickness of the diaphragm. Varying the BOD structure layout to smaller dimensions the pressure sensors can be operated up to 100 bar with sensitivities of about 141 Hz/bar.

Notes: Abstract The effect of fast magnetization reversal induced by external radio frequency (rf) fields has been studied in FeBO3 using the Mössbauer technique. The rf collapse and sideband effects were investigated as a function of intensity for two rf field frequencies: 62 and 36 MHz. The switching times estimated for magnetization reversal are of the same order of magnitude as in amorphous metals and Fe-Ni alloys. Because of the relatively short switching times the magnetization reversal must be of rotational character.

Notes: Abstract Raman spectroscopy was used to investigate the compressive fragmentation process and the interface behavior in ultra high modulus (UHM) (750 GPa Modulus) pitch-based graphite/polypropylene composites upon cooling from processing temperature to room temperature. It is found that bulging is the primary mechanism of failure in these fibers, and Raman peak position measurements show that not all visually detected features represent real fiber failure. However, at real break locations, the fiber strain is found to drop to zero.

Notes: Abstract Lamellar bone is common among primates, either in the form of extended planar circumferential arrays, or as cylindrically shaped osteons. Osteonal bone generally replaces circumferential lamellar bone with time, and it is therefore of much interest to compare the mechanical properties and fracture behavior of these two forms of lamellar bone. This is, however, difficult as natural specimens of circumferential lamellar bone large enough for standard mechanical tests are not available. We found that as a result of treatment with large doses of alendronate, the lateral sides of the diaphyses of baboon tibia contained fairly extensive regions of circumferential lamellar bone, the structure of which appears to be indistinguishable from untreated lamellar bone. Three-point bending tests were used to determine the elastic and ultimate properties of almost pure circumferential lamellar bone and osteonal bone in four different orientations relative to the tibia long axis. After taking into account the differences in porosity and extent of mineralization of the two bone types, the flexural modulus, bending strength, fracture strain and nominal work-to-fracture properties were similar for the same orientations, with some exceptions. This implies that it is the lamellar structure itself that is mainly responsible for these mechanical properties. The fracture behavior and morphologies of the fracture surfaces varied significantly with orientation in both types of bone. This is related to the microstructure of lamellar bone. Osteonal bone exhibited quite different damage-related behavior during fracture as compared to circumferential lamellar bone. Following fracture the two halves of osteonal bone remained attached whereas in circumferential lamellar bone they separated. These differences could well provide significant adaptive advantages to osteonal bone function.

Notes: Abstract We present new theoretical and experimental results which demonstrate that the degree of fiber-matrix bonding can be quantified by means of the interface energy for the initiation of debonding, rather than by using a stress-based interfacial parameter. A one-dimensional model for the energy necessary to initiate/nucleate an interfacial crack from its associated transverse fiber break during a single fiber fragmentation test is proposed. The interface energy for the initiation of debonding is shown to be a function of the fiber and matrix geometrical and material characteristics, and of the initial debonding length. The validity of the approach is demonstrated in the case of fragmentation of sized and unsized E-glass fibers embedded in an UV-cured polymeric matrix.
