Notes: Summary Prescribed burning is a major control over element cycles in Tallgrass prairie (Eastern Kansas, USA). In this paper we report potential effects of fire on nonsymbiotic nitrogen fixation. Fire resulted in additions of available P in ash, which may stimulate nitrogen fixation by terrestrial cyanobacteria. Cyanobacterial nitrogenase activity and biomass responded positively to additions of ash or P in laboratory assays using soil. Further assays in soil showed that cyanobacteria responded to changes in available N:available P ratio (aN:P) across a range of concentrations. Nitrogen fixation rate could be related empirically to aN:P via a log-linear relationship. Extrapolation of laboratory results to the field yielded a maximal estimate of 21 kg N ha-1 y-1. Results support arguments from the marine and terrestrial literature that P availability is central to regulation of ecosystem N budgets.

Notes: Summary Five tripeptides with the sequencel-Arg-d-X-l-Phe showed antibiotic activity on fungi and on some pathogenic moulds. The action of the peptides could be neutralized in the cross-strip test by thel-amino acid corresponding to thed-amino acid in the middle position.

Notes: Abstract A new class of topological Cartesian groups is introduced by bending the lines of the affine coordinate plane over an ordered skewfield countably infinitely often. These Cartesian groups belong to topological affine planes with continuous parallelism, but they need not yield a topological projective plane if the topology is not equal to the order topology of the skewfield, in contrast to the results of HARTMANN [6] for generalized Moulton planes.

Notes: Abstract.  We have studied MBE grown amorphous silicon, which was recrystallized at different temperatures for one hour, with a pulsed positron beam. A positron lifetime of 538±10 ps in the as-grown state is attributed to microvoids containing at least 10 vacancies. An incompletely recrystallized sample annealed at 500 °C shows an additional long lifetime from ortho-positronium (o-Ps) pick-off annihilation. The o-Ps component disappears for samples, recrystallized at 700 °C and above, and the defect lifetime steadily decreases with higher annealing temperature until a value of 310 ps is reached for the layer annealed at 1200 °C. This value is explained by positron trapping at dislocations or small vacancy defects stabilized by dislocations or impurities.

Notes: Abstract The sensitivity of the positron to the internal electric fields in good quality thin (≈100 nm) Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE)-grown layers is experimentally demonstrated. Both a thin intrinsic layer grown on a p-type substrate and a highly n-doped δ profile buried in intrinsic silicon form effective barriers to positron diffusion although no defects can be detected. We also extract, from a full treatment of the positron diffusion, a quantitative estimate of the concentration, below the detection limits of other methods, of large vacancy clusters in a thick (680 nm) film.

Notes: Abstract The cleaning of monocrystalline silicon substrates and thin thermally grown SiO2 layers on silicon by electrochemically produced ozone has been investigated. In both cases organics are removed very effectively. In comparison with other dry cleaning methods no radiation damage occurs.

Notes: Abstract We study the dynamics of geometric spin system on the torus with long-range interaction. As the number of particles goes to infinity, the process converges to a deterministic, dynamical magnetization field that satisfies an Euler equation (law of large numbers). Its stable steady states are related to the limits of the equilibrium measures (Gibbs states) of the finite particle system. A related equation holds for the magnetization densities, for which the property of propagation of chaos also is established. We prove a dynamical central limit theorem with an infinite-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process as a limiting fluctuation process. At the critical temperature of a ferromagnetic phase transition, both a tighter quantity scaling and a time scaling is required to obtain convergence to a one-dimensional critical fluctuation process with constant magnetization fields, which has a non-Gaussian invariant distribution. Similarly, at the phase transition to an antiferromagnetic state with frequencyp 0, the fluctuation process with critical scaling converges to a two-dimensional critical fluctuation process, which consists of fields with frequencyp 0 and has a non-Gaussian invariant distribution on these fields. Finally, we compute the critical fluctuation process in the infinite particle limit at a triple point, where a ferromagnetic and an antiferromagnetic phase transition coincide.
