Notes: Summary 1. Some polyesters formed by diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, and 1,2-propanediol with dicarboxylic acids have been prepared. 2. The effect of the structures of the starting substances on the melting points and solubilities of the resulting polyesters has been discussed. 3. It has been shown that the introduction of a methyl side group into a polyester molecule produces an effect similar to that of the introduction of three or four ether linkages, the crystallinity of the polymer being greatly reduced, its melting point lowered, and its solubility raised.

Notes: Summary 1. The polyesters formed by ethyleen glycol, 1,6-hexanediol, and 1,10-decanediol with the following dicarboxylic acids have been prepared under identical conditions: oxalic, malonic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, pimpelic, suberic, azelaic, and sebacic acids. 2. Polyesters derived from dicarboxylic acdis having even numbers of carbon atoms have higher melting points than the neighboring pairs of odd-acid polyesters. 3. The solubilities of the polyesters in benzene and alcohol have been determined, and it has been found that the polyesters of the odd dicarboxylic acids have the higher solubilities in alcohol. 4. An explanation has been advanced for the way in which the properties of the polyesters depend on their structures. 5. It has been established that the melting points of polyesters depend not only on the number of methylene groups in the repeating unit, but also on their distribution within the unit.

Notes: Summary 1. A study has been made of the effect of temperature on the polycondensation of ethylene glycol with oxalic, malonic, succinic, adipic, and sebacic acids. 2. It has been found that in presence of ethylene glycol the process of decarboxylation is greatly accelerated, and as a result no polyester is formed at ail in the case of oxalic and malonic acids, and in the case of succinic and adipic acids the molecular weight of the resulting polyester falls as the reaction temperature rims. 3. It has been found that in presence of glycols the decarboxylation temperatures of dicarboxylic acids are greatly lowered. 4. It has been established that the evolution of carbon dioxide results from the breakdown of the terminal carboxyl groups of the polyester molecule. 5. It has been shown that the breakdown of terminal carboxyl groups hinders the normal course of the polycondensation and leads to the formation of polyesters of lower molecular weight.

Notes: Summary 1. The elementary reactions of the polyesterification process have been examined and it has been shown that the increase in molecular size at different reaction stages is due to different mechanisms. 2. The polycondensation of sebacic acid diglycol ester has been studied.

Notes: Summary 1. The Hofmann Reaction has been carried out with the amides of N-benzoyl, N-acetyl and N-carbomethoxy β-Piperonyl-ß-alanine under different conditions (heating to 65° and 80°). 2. It has been shown that in all cases the reaction mechanism is the same as that which occurs with the amides of of N-acylated β-phenyl-ß-alanines. The mechanism may be considered a general one for amides of N-acylated aminoacids of the aromatic series. 3. In all three cases 5-piperonylglyoxalidone, 5-piperonyl-l,3,4-oxadiazol-2(3H)-one and piperonylic acid were separated from the reaction-mixture; in addition the reaction with N-benzoyl-ß-piperonyl-ß-alanine yielded 1-N-benzoyl-5-piperonylglyoxalidone. 4. It has been shown that the separation of 1-N-benzoyl-5-piperonyglyoxalidone takes place readily under the conditions used by Rodionov and Zvorykina for amino-acids if the aliphatic series (heating to 65°), and the separation of piperonylic acid under the more drastic conditions (heating to 80° ) which we have previously used (reaction proceeding further ). 5. When the Hofmann Reaction was carried out on N-acetyl-ß-piperonyl-ß-alanine, a bromine-containing compound of composition C12H13O4N2Br was separated.

Notes: Summary 1. A study has been made of the polycondensation of acid adipic esters of glycols, namely, the acid diadipic esters of ethylene glycol and of 1,20-eicosanediol. 2. It has been shown that acid esters of glycols are able to undergo polycondensation and form m polyesters. 3. It has been shown that in the polyesterification process the growth of the polyester chain occurs not only on account of reaction between terminal groups (direct esterification), but also on account of transesterification processes (alcoholysis and acidolysis). 4. A scheme has been proposed for the synthetic reactions occurring in the polyesterification process. 5. Acid esters of adipic acid - diadipic esters of ethylene glycol and of 1,20-eicosanediol - have been prepared

Notes: Summary 1. A method has been developed for the determination of the thernal stability and decomposition kinetics for organic carboxylic acids. 2. The decarboxylation temperatures have been determined for oxalic, malonic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, suberic, azelaic, and sebacic acids. 3. It has been found that dicarboxylic acids having an odd number of carbon atoms decompose at lower temperatures than acids having an even number of carbon atoms. 4. It has been shown that the thermal stability of the acid increases as we proceed from the lower t the higher members of the homologous series of dicarboxylic acids. 5. It has been shown that decarboxylation of dicarboxylic acids must play a considerable inhibiting role in the course of the polycondensation of these acids with bifunctional substances.

Notes: Summary 1. A study has been made of- reactions in three mixtures, each containing two polyesters having different and groups. Three polyester components, having carboxyl, hydroxyl, and ethoxyl end groups respectively, are used. 2. It has been found that the polyester having hydroxyl end groups.reacts with the polyesters having carboxyl and ethoxyl end groups. 3. It has been found that the polyester having carboxyl end groups does not react with the polyester having ethoxyl end groups. 4. It has been shown that a decisive factor for the occurrence of polycondensation is the volatility of the low-molecular-weight product that separates: high volatility leads to a displacement of the equilibrium to the right and so to the growth of the polymer molecules. 5. It has been shown that macromolecules have fairly high reactivities, so that they are capable of undergoing the same reactions as the monomers are.

Notes: Summary 1. The kinetics of the acidolysis reaction of ethyl stearate with succinic and adipic acids have been investigated at 122, 168, 183, and 250°. 2. It is shown that the reaction of acidolysis by dicarboxylic acids may proceed even without a catalyst; however, sulfuric acid considerably increases the reaction rate. 3. It has been found that the molar ratio of ester and dicarboxylic acid taken has an effect on the percent conversion of the acid during acidolysis. The higher this ratio, the further the reaction goes. 4. It is shown that the acidolysis reaction is of great importance in the polyesterification process.
