Notes: Summary The movements and distribution of lanthanum have been studied in frog skins treated on the outside with Ringer's solution to which 400mm urea had been added. Under these conditions,140La moved across the skin. This finding is in contrast with what is observed in control skins, which are impermeable to lanthanum. Examination with the electron-microscope of skins fixed during equilibration with outside hypertonic solutions plus lanthanum, showed penetration of the tracer from the outside into the intercellular spaces of all the inner layers of the epidermis. The occluding zonules (tight junctions) that normally prevent the inward movement of lanthanum beyond the outer border of the stratum granulosum (SG) are open. As a consequence, most intercellular spaces along the lateral cell surfaces of the SG were permeated by lanthanum throughout their extension. In skins treated with hypertonic solutions and then allowed to recover in normal Ringer's, the occluding zonules of the SG were impermeable to lanthanum, and140La did not move across the epidermis. These observations show that the increased skin permeability caused by outside hypertonic solutions results mainly from a reversible opening of tight junctions.

Notes: Summary An electron microscopic examination of eight non-flagellate strains of S. typhimurium revealed that an H1 (amber) mutant produced flagellar hooks and basal structures indistinguishable from those associated with the proximal end of normal flagella. No flagella-related structures were seen in strains with mutations in fla genes A, B, C, D, F, K or M. A mutant of a new fla complementation group, flaR, produced abnormal structures, termed “superhooks”, which resemble the hooks of normal flagella assembled end-to-end. The mutant locus, flaR, maps between flaM and flaAIII.

Notes: Summary Chemical analyses of centrifugal fractions of cell-free extracts of three spirilla and Sacch. cerevisiae showed that the granular inclusions accumulated by these organisms do not contain significant amounts (if any) of polyphosphates. Further, no trichloroacetic acid extractable-barium precipitable polyphosphates could be isolated from the spirilla. Thus, the granules of spirilla, heretofore called volutin, are not identifiable with polyphosphates. The phase opaque bodies present in members of this genus are composed primarily of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate. It is recommended that the term volutin no longer be used to describe granules showing a metachromatic reaction.

Notes: Abstract Genetic nets represent an attempt to model genome structure. Depending on the interaction dynamics assumed, they can constitute highly non-linear chemical systems having multiple steady states; hence their relevance to the theory of dissipative structures. Their typical size and possible complexity makes it difficult to study them by means of customary analytical techniques based on differential equations. We have therefore considered an algebraic approach derived from regarding the nets as finite-state automata. This view has revealed a surprisingly rich algebraic structure which can be used to investigate problems concerned with the relation between biological structure and function. This algebraic structure is described with particular reference to the genetic nets of Tsanev and Sendov.

Notes: Abstract The derivation of learning models relative to choice behavior in experimenter-subject controlled experiments with two outcomes (right or wrong) is considered from the point of view that any such model must satisfy a criterion of optimality. The criterion adopted for investigation, termed optimal asymptotic behavior, is that of the subject asymptotically learning which of the alternatives has the greater probability of being correct. A class of path-dependent linear models is posed as possible candidates. It is shown that no members of this class satisfy the criterion although two of them approach it by making a learning parameter small enough. The possible implications of this are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Response probabilities are interpreted from two points of view. One corresponds to fluctuations in physical parameters suggestive of a neurological basis, and the other corresponds to fluctuations in stimulus sample constitution. The two interpretations are shown to be equivalent under rather general conditions, giving the same type of relation between response and training states. This relation is different from that obtained via the response strength concept used in Part I. As a step toward evaluating the difference in predicted behavior for these different response-training relations, a general functional-difference equation is derived that describes the moments of the corresponding stochastic process in experimenter-subject controlled experiments. As an immediate application, it is used to obtain the continuity condition for the solution of the functional equation treated in Part I, and to justify the differentiability conditions assumed in establishing asymptotic properties of the solution as a function of the reinforcement parameter.
