Notes: SUMMARY. Temperature and current discharge regulated phytoplanktonic concentration, chlorophyll-a concentration, the light-saturated rate of photosynthesis (Pmax), and photosynthetic capacity (Pcap) in the Mississippi River at Prairie Island, Minnesota. The chlorophyll-a maximum was 48 mg m−3 in 1975, a wet year with a high current discharge, and 190 mg m−3 in 1976, a relatively dry year. The highest values of Pmax were 0.37 (mgO2 I−1h−1) in 1975 and 1.60 in 1976. Pcap varied from 3 to 21 (gO2 per g chlorophyll-a h−1) both years, and its value was highly correlated with temperature. The temperature optimum shifted from 16°C for Pcap in the spring, to greater than 28°C in the summer. Multiple regression analysis indicated a second-order relationship of Pcap in the spring to temperature. Other independent variables explained only negligible variation of Pcap.

Notes: Summary There are several sources of potential error in calculating the concentration or energy value of floral nectar. Errors resulting from confusing data become substantial with increasing concentration. The different methods of expressing sugar concentration are here clarified, and the correct methods of converting from one to the other are provided. Refractometers in use in field studies usually read on a weight per total weight basis; this is recommended as the mode of statement. The perils of oversimplifying conversions from this mode, as is often done, are pointed out.

Notes: Abstract Linear mesospheric circulation models can quite realistically simulate mid-latitude mesospheric circulation and structure. In doing so they provide estimates for dissipation (Rayleigh friction ∼2×10−6s−1) and vertical mixing (≤30 m2s−1) appropriate near the mesopause.

Notes: Summary 1. Umbrellar fragments of the leptomedusaCampanularia johnstoni with or without parts of the radial canal demonstrate a gradient in the potential for manubrium regeneration and in regeneration time. 2. Implantation experiments exclude the manubrium as a source of inhibition or induction in the regeneration of another manubrium. One special case of inhibition appears to be due to competition for a common substrate. 3. Medusa fragments consisting of only peripheral umbrella (C-fragments) undergo a considerably different restitution process as compared with fragments including a central portion of the umbrella (A-fragments). Vital stain is seen to disperse in the subumbrellar tissues during this process in C-fragments, whereas vital stain in A-fragments is observed to accumulate and later on is incorporated into the regenerating manubrium. 4. The mesogloea of different-sized A-fragments retains a stable form when freed of its adhering cellular components, after a 12–24 h regeneration period; for C-fragments, however, the same result is not observed until 72 to 96 h after their excision. 5. InPodocoryne carnea the observed gradients in manubrium regeneration can be abolished when the subumbrellar tissues are separated from the mesogloea by collagenase treatment. 6. A model for manubrium regeneration in interradial fragments, based on the influence of tension exerted by the cicatrization process and the counteracting mesogloeal force, is presented and discussed.

Notes: Summary The only period of sexual brood production during the year occurred at the beginning of the wet season. Dispersal of mature sexuals from their colonies of origin took place in the third and fourth months of the wet season. However, dispersal of alate females was not apparent from nests at the cacao site. The worker caste was produced throughout the wet season and reached a peak after the dispersal of mature sexual castes. For the rest of the year they were produced at a reduced level, dependent in part upon the harshness of the dry season.

Notes: Abstract A cooperative program in urban geology between the city of Boulder, Colorado, and the Department of Geological Sciences, University of Colorado, has been in effect since late 1969. The principal geological problems in the rapidly growing urban environment of Boulder include: 1. Swelling clays in the Pierre Shale have been related to foundation failure, pavement heaving, and landsliding on hillslopes. 2. Colluvium and ancient landslides have been made unstable by removal of support, by loading with buildings or fill, and by increases over natural moisture contents through lawn watering and septic-tank seepage. 3. Flooding on high-gradient mountain streams has been caused by sedimentation induced by the constriction of natural channels through urban development. In May, 1969, Bear Canyon Creek overflowed its banks with a discharge of less than one-fifth its design capacity. Flooding was caused by coarse bedload deposited upstream from a culvert. The Boulder city geologist collects data on soils exposed in open excavations within the city, maps ancient and modern landslides, provides information for contractors bidding on public works projects, and reviews the geologic aspects of all consulting work prepared for the city. Examples of formats used for the communication of information to responsible city officials include geotechnic maps of all open cuts, street pavement design maps, and input into the city-wide standard specifications for enginnering projects.

Notes: Abstract Simulated white noise analysis experiments on a simple integrate-and-fire neuron model with adaptation yields Wiener kernels comparable to those found for a crayfish stretch receptor neuron, for low modulation depths (linear range). At high modulation depths (nonlinear range), this model corresponds well to the neuron only if the “membrane potential” variable is constrained to positive values. An alternative kind of neural model considered is one in which spike initiation processes are ignored, and instead a time-continuous spike frequency variable is used. Such an analytic differential equation model can be represented by a half-wave rectifier with low-pass feedback; simulated white noise analysis of this model shows good correspondence with the stretch receptor, except at the higher frequencies approaching the cell's carrier frequency. The analytic system model is amenable to mathematical analysis using linear and nonlinear systems theory, resulting in equations which relate features of Wiener kernels (peaks, undershoots, time constants, etc.) to previously described features of neurons (threshold, pacemaker sensitivity, adaptation or post-inhibitory rebound).

Notes: Abstract G-, C-, Q-banding and standard karyotypic analyses were used to study the chromosomal relationships of emydid turtles. Ten species of emydids were used (5 batagurines and 5 emydines) which samples all of the karyotypic variation known for the Emydidae. Data from a testudinid and a chelydrid are compared to the emydids. The karyotype of Mauremys and Sacalia is considered representative of the primitive karyotype for this group because of its widespread occurrence in the morphologically primitive Batagurinae and its similarity to that of some testudinids. The emydine karyotype is believed to have evolved from the primitive batagurine karyotype by the deletion of a heterochromatic macrochromosome. Siebenrockiella and Rhinoclemys are karyotypically derived batagurines.
