    Notes: Abstract The Myall Creek copper prospect is in unmetamorphosed carbonaceous dolosiltstone and sandstone at the base of the late Proterozoic (Adelaidean) Tapley Hill Formation. It contains disseminated, fine-grained chalcopyrite, zincian tennanite, bornite, chalcocite, pyrite, sphalerite and galena, and irregular to straight chalcopyrite-rich veinlets. Some ore minerals rim and/or partially replace pyrite or clastic grains. There is no evidence of hydrothermal activity. The δ34SCDT values of pyrite and the other sulfides fall in the wide range −3.6 to +44.2‰. Dolomite in both mineralised and unmineralised samples has δ13CPDB values concentrated around −3‰, and δ18OSMOW values around +25‰. It is concluded that the mineralising fluids were near-neutral brines which leached metals from the basement and early Adelaidean rocks. They entered the Tapley Hill sediments at moderately low temperatures via permeable strata and faults. The metals were precipitated by biogenic H2S, and also fixed by reaction with iron sulfides and, possibly, organic matter. Continuing ascent of brines into the mineralised strata caused breakdown of detrital feldspars and Fe-Ti oxides, and some solution-remobilisation of early-formed sulfides.

    Notes: Abstract Chalcopyrite-rich bedded and vein mineralization at Kapunda occurs in two locally developed dolosiltstone units within a sequence of generally darker-coloured, finer-grained calcmudstones and siltstones. The Mine Series accumulated in shallow water to supratidal, sabkha-like environments; there is no evidence for igneous activity in the region. Isotope data for bedded sulphides are characteristic of biological sulphate reduction in a restricted basin. It is likely that iron sulphides were produced initially, and that copper was introduced subsequently in mildly oxidizing, highly saline groundwaters, the influence of which is seen in the δ13C-δ18O correlation for dolomite in the mineralized siltstones. Isotopic data support derivation of the veins from their host sediments, and this appears to have occurred before lithification.

    Notes: Summary Ehrlich ascites tumor cells resuspended in hypotonic medium initially swell as nearly perfect osmometers, but subsequently recover their volume within 5 to 10 min with an associated KCl loss. 1. The regulatory volume decrease was unaffected when nitrate was substituted for Cl−, and was insensitive to bumetanide and DIDS. 2. Quinine, an inhibitor of the Ca2+-activated K+ pathway, blocked the volume recovery. 3. The hypotonic response was augmented by addition of the Ca2+ ionophore A23187 in the presence of external Ca2+, and also by a sudden increase in external Ca2+. The volume response was accelerated at alkaline pH. 4. The anti-calmodulin drugs trifluoperazine, pimozide, flupentixol, and chlorpromazine blocked the volume response. 5. Depletion of intracellular Ca2+ stores inhibited the regulatory volume decrease. 6. Consistent with the low conductive Cl− permeability of the cell membrane there was no change in cell volume or Cl− content when the K+ permeability was increased with valinomycin in isotonic medium. In contrast, addition of the Ca2+ ionophore A23187 in isotonic medium promoted Cl− loss and cell shrinkage. During regulatory volume decrease valinomycin accelerated the net loss of KCl, indicating that the conductive Cl− permeability was increased in parallel with and even more than the K+ permeability. It is proposed that separate conductive K+ and Cl− channels are activated during regulatory volume decrease by release of Ca2+ from internal stores, and that the effect is mediated by calmodulin.

    Notes: Abstract Fifteen strains of cyanobacteria, mainly Nostoc and Anabaena species, were screened for plasmids using five rapid procedures. Two of these methods, based on alkaline extraction and phenol extraction of cleared lysates respectively, were successful with a total of ten species, the latter method proving more sensitive. Plasmids ranging from less than 2.6 to at least 30 mD were isolated; most of the strains examined possessed one or two plasmids, while five lacked detectable plasmid DNA.

    Notes: Summary Reversions of a mutation lye 1.5 blocking the first step of the lysine catabolic pathway were isolated. These reversions mapped inside the LYC1 locus. They exhibited an alteration of the regulation of the lysine pool after nitrogen and phosphorus starvation. This phenomenon did not appear in sexual diploids homozygous for the reversion. Diploids homozygous for the mating type were constructed by protoplast fusion. They displayed a pattern similar to that of the haploids. We conclude that the expression of this mutation is under the control of the physiological state of the mating type.

    Notes: Abstract The courts have provided the traditional battleground for conflicts between environmental interest groups and those whose actions in some way have an adverse impact on the environment The judicial process is a time-consuming one in which all sides usually must concede to some points. Environmental disputes involve complex scientific issues which the court system is not set up to comprehend, so that the process gives the parties to a dispute the sense of having lost control of their own destinies. An increasing number of parties to environmental disputes are turning to negotiation, or mediation, as an alternative in which they can be active parties in the settlement-making process rather than the victims of a court-imposed solution When do the parties to a dispute choose a negotiated settlement over a court battle? To what extent does each party make the concessions necessary to reach an agreement? These questions can be answered by the game theory that provides a model for analyzing the negotiation process. This paper will apply game theory to two environmental conflict cases A series of questions pertinent to the analysis of all environmental disputes will be raised
