Description / Table of Contents: Contents The characteristics of a sixpulse bridge converter with external commutation on the d.c. side are described. For that purpose the waveforms of currents and voltages are evaluated at first neglecting the impedances in the commutation circuits. Next the influence of these impedances on the commutation procedure, on the angle of overlap and on the direct current characteristic is considered. Harmonics in currents and voltages are investigated using some special assumptions. Finally the behaviour of the sixpulse bridge converter with external commutation on the d.c. side is evaluated when working with intermittent current on the a.c. side. The conditions for this operation mode are derived.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents The characteristics of converters with natural commutation on the d.c. side are described using the example of a two pulse bridge connection. This type of converters was not evaluated very largely in the past compared to the converters with natural commutation on the a.c. side. In this paper the characteristics of the direct current and the commutation procedure are evaluated. This includes calculating the angle of overlap. The advantagous behaviour of this type of converters is shown when operating in the inverter mode. The equation of the angle of advance is derived. This equation is compared to that of the converter using natural commutation on the a.c. side. The influence of inductances in the commutation circuits on the average value of the direct current is shown. Some systematic remarks are made on single-way connections and double-way connections of converters using natural commutation on the d.c. side.

Notes: Summary The intracellular electrolyte concentrations of the frog skin epithelium have been determined in thin freeze-dried cryosections using the technique of electron microprobe analysis. Stimulation of the transepithelial Na transport by arginine vasopressin (AVP) resulted in a marked increase in the Na concentration and a reciprocal drop in the K concentration in all epithelial cell layers. The effects of AVP were cancelled by addition of amiloride. It is concluded from these results that the primary mechanism by which AVP stimulates transepithelial Na transport is an increase in the Na permeability of the apical membrane. However, also some evidence has been obtained for an additional stimulatory effect of AVP on the Na pump. In mitochondria-rich cells and in gland cells no significant concentration changes were detected, supporting the view that these cells do not share in transepithelial Na transport. Furthermore, the dependence of the intracellular electrolyte concentrations upon the Na concentration in the outer and inner bathing solution was evaluated. Both in control and AVP-stimulated skins the intracellular Na concentration showed saturation already at low external Na concentrations, indicating that the self-inhibition of transepithelial Na transport is due to a reduction of the permeability of the apical membrane. After lowering the Na concentration in the internal bath frequently a Na increase in the outermost and a drop in the deeper epithelial layers was observed. It is concluded that partial uncoupling of the transport syncytium occurs, which may explain the inhibition of the transepithelial Na transport and blunting of the AVP response under this condition.

Notes: Abstract Recognition of AeEα Ia antigens at the functional level was investigated using T-cell clones. The reactivities of an alloreactive and an antigen-reactive clone, both of which recognized AeEα Ia molecules, were compared on a panel of stimulator/antigen-presenting cells of various genotypes. The two clones recognized all tested A e b E α x Ia molecules, where x is a haplotype capable of expressing an Ia.7-bearing Eα polypeptide. Ia antigen recognition by either clone could be inhibited by the monoclonal antibody Y-17, which recognizes a combinatorial serologic determinant on certain AeEα molecules. There were no differences in the recognition of Ia by the alloreactive versus the antigen-reactive clone, suggesting that Ia antigens are recognized by the two clones in a fundamentally similar way. The recognition of these various Ia molecules by the two cloned T-cell lines provides evidence that the Eα polypeptides from H-2 haplotypes k, d, r, and u are functionally indistinguishable.

Notes: Abstract Beck (1972, 1973) hypothesized that textural segmentation occurs strongly on the basis of simple properties such as brightness, color, size, and the slopes of contours and lines of the elemental descriptors of a texture or textural elements. The experiment reported supports the hypothesis that specific stimulus features, rather than second-order statistics, account for textural segmentation. The results agree with Julesz (1981a, b) who has reported evidence disproving his original conjecture of the importance of second-order statistics. Julesz (1981a, b) now hypothesizes textural segmentation to be a function of local features which he called textons. Textons are features that give textural segmentation when textures have identical second-order statistics. The two hypotheses are to date in complete agreement on the stimulus features producing textural segmentation, and the experiment reported is consistent with both.
