Notes: Abstract Corals in an in situ respirometer exposed to suspended peat during the day greatly decreased net oxygen production, probably due to a reduction of intensity and spectral quality of light reaching the symbiotic zooxanthellae. Net production returned to pre-exposure levels after the chambers were cleared; the corals showed no behavioral effects. In contrast, after exposure during the night, corals displayed clearing behavior (such as extreme distension of the coenosarc and trapping of peat particles in thick clumps of mucus) and an increase in respiration rate comparable to the decrease in net production observed during the daytime exposure. The following morning, net production values were significantly lower than pre-exposure production values although ambient light intensity was slightly higher. This decrease in production as well as a 22% reduction of chlorophyll content in the coral tissue indicated loss of zooxanthellae from the stressed corals. Long-term exposure to such a stress could reduce coral growth rates and substantially alter coral reef communities.

Notes: Abstract Angular distributions of jet axes with respect to the beam axis for 3-jet events ine + e − annihilation provide a more sensitive indication of the spins of the underlying particles than the commonly used energy flow variables. Closed expressions for the angular distributions of quark and gluon jet axes are given in both single and double differential form. The angular distributions for undistinguished jets, e.g. the least energetic jet, are calculated. Vector gluons (QCD) and scalar gluons are contrasted to illustrate sensitivity to the gluon spin in each case.

Notes: Abstract The left-flat plane wave solutions are examined structurally and the family of totally null two-surfaces which are the points of the corresponding deformed twistor space are exhibited explicitly. This family is then used to generate a good-cut function which exhibits these plane waves asH spaces in a generalized setting which is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The nonlinear graviton construction of Penrose is given explicitly for the nonlinear superposition of a finite number of plane waves with arbitrary propagation directions, phase, and amplitude profiles. These are realized as generalizedH-spaces for which the asymptotic data are distributional and have singular support on a finite number of null generators ofI +.

Notes: Summary A chlorotic condition of soybeans in the river valleys of eastern Nebraska was studied. The pattern of chlorosis, presence of petiolar necrosis, reductions in rhizobial and mycorrhizal infection, and plant and soil chemical analyses suggest that the condition is more complex than normal iron deficiency chlorosis or other mineral deficiencies or toxicities. Nodulation is almost totally inhibited in affected plants. Mycorrhizal fungi, while able to infect early in the season, do not persist on affected plants. Breakdown of endodermis was observed in the roots of affected plants. The factors contributing to this condition have not yet been determined.

Notes: Abstract A stochastic approximation problem for polynomic operators is formulated. The performance of polynomic operators of various degrees is compared. The effect of causality constraints is also examined.

Notes: Abstract High-density polyethylene (HDPE) of two different average molecular weights, ¯M w, has been solid-state extruded in an Instron capillary rheometer through brass capillary dies of several entrance angles from 10 to 180°. Extrusion rates increase substantially at smaller angles whereas the maximum achievable extrusion draw ratio, (R E), is realized at larger angles. At a constant R E, maxima are observed in plots of linear expansion coefficient, Young's modulus, tensile strength and elongation at break against die entrance angle. These maxima occur at angles of 20 to 30° for the lower molecular weight HDPE (¯M w = 59 000). For the higher molecular weight HDPE (¯M w = 92 000) maxima were at angles of 14 to 20°.

Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of uredia, intercellular and intracellular hyphae ofUromyces viciae-fabae onVicia faba has been studied by scanning electron microscopy of frozen-hydrated material. Frozen-hydrated leaves will readily fracture and can be viewed on the cold stage of the microscope at liquid nitrogen temperatures for several hours without visible surface changes occurring. Both fungal and host-plant cells show a high degree of morphological preservation with little or no loss of cell contents and with minimal signs of shrinkage. Intracellular hyphae may be filamentous and branched or short and lobed. They are constricted at the point of entry into the host cell. Intercellular matrix material is well preserved around developing pedicels and urediospores and may act as a lubricant. The technique described is very quick compared with conventional preparatory procedures.
