Notes: Abstract This paper reports the observation and analysis of several different opticalpumping and energy-transfer processes for generating stimulated radiation, including equal or unequal frequency two-step Na2−K and K2−K hybrid resonance. A series of infrared stimulated and cascade stimulated lines by the transitions in atomic potassium were detected.

Notes: Summary We report the construction of an RFLP genetic map of rice (Oryza sativa) chromosomes. The map is comprised of 135 loci corresponding to clones selected from a PstI genomic library. This molecular map covers 1,389 cM of the rice genome and exceeds the current classical maps by more than 20%. The map was generated from F2 segregation data (50 individuals) from a cross between an indica and javanica rice cultivar. Primary trisomics were used to assign linkage groups to each of the 12 rice chromosomes. Seventy-eight percent of the clones assayed revealed RFLPs between the two parental cultivars, indicating that rice contains a significant amount of RFLP variation. Strong correlations between size of hybridizing restriction fragments and level of polymorphism indicate that a significant proportion of the RFLPs in rice are generated by insertions/delections. This conclusion is supported by the occurrence of null alleles for some clones (presumably created by insertion or deletion events). One clone, RG229, hybridized to sequences in both the indica and javanica genomes, which have apparently transposed since the divergence of the two cultivars from their last common ancestor, providing evidence for sequence movement in rice. As a by product of this mapping project, we have discovered that rice DNA is less C-methylated than tomato or maize DNA. Our results also suggest the notion that a large fraction of the rice genome (approximately 50%) is single copy.

Notes: Abstract Coupled electron-hole (e-h) Boltzmann equations are applied to evaluate the resistivity ρ and Hall coefficientR H for a two-band model system with e-h, impurity, and phonon scatterings. We show that the anomalous temperature dependences ρ=αT andR H −1 =βT observed on YBaCuO compounds can be obtained by assuming a special two-band model in which the e-h scattering is responsible for the resistivity and the chemical potential varies linearly with temperature.

Notes: Abstract The influence of quantum effects on the one-body dissipation has been studied in a Monte-Carlo simulation method. The dissappearance of quantum effects with increasing amplitude of the oscillation is demonstrated.

Notes: Abstract More than 25 laser lines around 2.5 μm from theC 1∏ u state to (3)1∑ g + and 7 laser lines around 0.9 μm from the high-lying1∑ u state to (2)1∑ g + in the sodium dimer were detected using a nitrogen laser as the pumping source. Most of the optically pumped laser lines have been identified.

Notes: Abstract Tunable coherent radiation around 840, 830, and 795 nm has been generated upon two-photon excitation of sodium 4d and 5s levels, respectively. The generation is due to special parametric processes. A molecular nature of the emissions, as recently proposed, can be ruled out by the performed investigations.

Notes: Summary A finite element scheme is presented in this paper to simulate fields of temperature and deformation as well as stress in the steady continuous casting process. A steady heat conduction equation incorporating heat generation due to solidification is formulated when considering the effect of flow rate. A viscoplastic constitutive model capable to describing elastic-viscoplastic solids as well as a viscous fluid is developed for the stress analysis. As an illustrative example a vertical continuous casting process is simulated by use of the finite element method, and the calculated results of temperature, deformation and stress in a slab are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We present meterwave maps of the solar corona made with the Clark Lake Radioheliograph at 30.9, 50, and 73.8 MHz for one solar rotation. We compare and contrast them with optical data: 10830 Å maps, white-light coronagraph images (SOLWIND and Mauna Loa K coronameter) and forbidden line scans. Most of the sources in the radio maps persist for two days or more, and appear to rotate approximately with the solar rate. A coronal hole seen against the disk at all three frequencies shows interesting similarities and significant differences with the optical signatures of the hole. Elongated features of the 50 MHz corona correspond rather well to the azimuthal position of white light streamers seen in SOLWIND images. Synoptic charts made from the radio maps show overall similarities to synoptic charts constructed from (limb) coronagraph data. Some of the differences may result from the different weightings given by the radio and optical data to density and temperature, or by the different sensitivities to non-radial geometries. We show that the combined use of meter wave and optical images provide considerable new insights into the three-dimensional structure of the low to middle corona.

Notes: Abstract We present meterwave maps showing a coronal hole at 30.9, 50.0, and 73.8 MHz using the Clark Lake Radioheliograph in October 1984. The coronal hole seen against the disk at all three frequencies shows interesting similarities to, and significant differences from its optical signatures in He i λl10830 spectroheliograms. Using the model of coronal holes by Dulk et al. (1977) we derive the electron density from the radio observations of the brightness temperature. The discrepancy between the density value derived from the Skylab EUV data and that computed from our radio data is even larger than in Dulk et al. 's comparison at similar and higher frequencies.

Notes: Abstract We establish some inequalities connecting natural parameters of a partial order P. For example, if every interval [a,b] contains at most λ maximal chains, if some antichain has cardinality v, and if there are χ1 chains whose union is cofinal and coinitial in P, then the chain decomposition number for P is ⩽χ1λv (Theorem 2.2), and the inequality is sharp in a certain sense (Section 3).
