Notes: Summary The chromosome number and karyotype of two wasp species of the genusPolistes were determined by a technique involving colchicine and sodium citrate pre-treatment, which permitted a more precise chromosome identification. The speciesPolistes (Aphanilopterus) simillimus, with n=28, 2n=56 chromosomes, andPolistes (Aphanilopterus) versicolor versicolor, with n=31, 2n=62 chromosomes, showed sharply characteristic individual karyotypes.

Notes: Abstract An algorithm for generating maximal minimally strongly connected (MMSC) subgraphs or cliques in undirected graphs has been suggested by Daset al. in a recent paper. The proposed algorithm is based on a refinement of the technique of successive splitting described by Paull and Unger in the determination of maximal compatibles of states in the context of minimization of incomplete sequential machines. The present paper discusses the performance of the aforementioned subgraph generation algorithm in an implementation on Cyber System 170/720 using FORTRAN IV, in particular reference to cluster analysis.

Notes: Abstract If and when the time variation of optimal controls of a linear system subject to known forces is required, they can be obtained by the computationally advantageous open loop Volterra formulation (as opposed to the costlier Riccati formulation). For the computation, the Volterra equation is discretized in the time domain via such schemes as trapezoidal integration or SIMPSON's rule and the resulting linear system is solved to obtain the control vector values at discrete time points within the control timeT. In the case of very large order systems (degrees of freedom ∼ 5000) a parallel technique is absolutely neccessary, and this paper enunciates an efficient parallel stratagem with efficiencies in the range of 80% and 100%. The algorithm uses ‘s + 1’ processors, ‘s’ being the number of intervals within the control timeT, and typically each processor characterizes one time point.

Notes: Summary The need to transfer genetic traits from Diplotaxis muralis (2n=42) to Brassica juncea (2n=36), a major oil seed crop of the tropical world, was realised. Since the two plant types are sexually incompatible, attempts were made to evolve parasexual hybrids as the result of protoplast fusion. Protoplasts of hypocotyl-derived calli of two cultivars of B. juncea were fused with normal and γ-irradiated mesophyll protoplasts of Diplotaxis muralis. Regeneration of 110 plants from the fused products was successfully achieved. Upon analysis of some of them, we realised that true somatic hybrids and partial somatic hybrids had been generated. Thus the primary goal of evolving intergeneric hybridisation products between these two plant types was fulfilled.

Notes: Abstract With the aim of investigating the influence of fragment nuclear structure e.g. shell closure configuration and odd-even nature on the scission configuration, fragment angular momenta have been deduced from the radiochemically determined independent isomeric yield ratios of the fission products111Pd,131Te,133Te,134I and138Cs in252Cf spontaneous fission. The fragments' angular momenta deduced are 8.8± 1.5, 5.8 ±1.0, 6.1±1.1, 11.5±1.1 and 9.8±1.2 ħ respectively. The angular momenta data from this work and literature have been analysed to arrive at fragments' deformations at the scission bringing out the influence of the spherical 82n and deformed 66n and 88n shells. The fragment angular momenta were also seen to be inversely correlated to their elemental yields exhibiting odd-even fluctuations. This has been explained in terms of equilibration of the collective degrees of freedom in low energy fission.

Notes: Abstract Independent isomeric yield ratios of128Sb were determined radiochemically in the thermal neutron induced fission of241Pu and 34 MeV alpha particle induced fission of238U, both involving the same compound nucleus (242Pu). Fragment angular momenta estimated from the measured isomer ratios using the statistical model analysis showed significantly larger fragment angular momenta in the medium energy fissioning system compared to the low energy fissioning system. This has been attributed to the effect of higher excitation energy and angular momentum in the entrance channel leading to increased fragment temperature, moments of inertia and angular velocity. An attempt was made to calculate the fragment angular momentum in the medium energy fission using the Fermi gas model for the fissioning nucleus, taking into account the multichance fission, saddle shapes of the fissioning nuclei and the angular velocity components of the fissioning nuclei both along and orthogonal to the fission axis. The calculated angular momenta agree well with the experimental results.
