    Notes: Abstract The individual contributions of the first two external domains of the HLA-B7 heavy chain to the expression of allele-specific (B7) and locus-specific (B and C) antigenic determinants were investigated using hybrid class I genes. Hybrid genes were constructed in vitro by exon shuffling between the parent genes HLA-B7, HLA-Cw3, HLA-A3, and H-2K d, and their expression was monitored following transfection into mouse L cells. The results show that most allele-specific antigenic determinants are associated with the first external domain of the 137 heavy chain, whereas all the locus-specific antigenic determinants tested map to the second external domain.

    Notes: Abstract A scheme for visual pattern recognition is described. It is supposed, amongst other things, that patterns are internally represented by the visual system in terms of local features, spatial-order relations between local features, and global spatial relations specifying approximate pattern position with respect to the point of fixation. It is further supposed that there are two distinct types of internal operation that may be applied to the components of internal representations in the process of pattern comparison: typically a discrete spatial-order-reversal operation and a continuous position-shift operation. Some general predictions of the scheme are tested against data obtained in an experiment using random-dot patterns that were subjected to rigid transormations and presented at various locations along the horizontal meridian. Patterns were presented sequentially, in pairs, to subjects in a “same-different” comparison task. Pattern pairs were to be responded to as “same” if they were identical or related by point-inversion (planar rotation through 180°) or responded to as “different”. Extending earlier findings, the present results showed that “same”-detection performance for identical and point-inverted patterns depended differentially on the distance between the patterns and the symmetry of the pattern positions about the point of fixation in a manner consistent with the predictions of the scheme.

    Notes: Abstract An introduction to the application of surface integral equation methods to the calculation of eddy current-flaw interactions is presented. Two two-dimensional problems are presented which are solved by the boundary integral equation method. Application of collocation methods reduces the problems to systems of linear algebraic equations. The first problem is that of a closed surface crack in a flat slab with an AC magnetic field parallel to the plane of the crack. The second is that of av-groove crack in the AC field of a pair of parallel wires placed parallel to the vertex of the crack. In both cases, maps of the current densities at the surface are displayed, as well as the impedance changes due to the cracks.

    Notes: Abstract We consider a two-person constant sum perfect information game, which we call theEnd Play Game, which arises from an abstraction of simple end play positions in card games of the whist family, including bridge. This game was described in 1929 by Emanuel Lasker, the mathematician and world chess champion, who called itwhistette. The game uses a deck of cards that consists of a single totally ordered suit of 2n cards. To begin play the deck is divided into two handsA andB ofn cards each, held by players Left and Right, and one player is designated as having thelead. The player on lead chooses one of his cards, and the other player after seeing this card selects one of his own to play. The player with the higher card wins a “trick” and obtains the lead. The cards in the trick are removed from each hand, and play then continues until all cards are exhausted. Each player strives to maximize his trick total, and thevalue of the game to each player is the number of tricks he takes. Despite its simple appearance, this game is quite complicated, and finding an optimal strategy seems difficult. This paper derives basic properties of the game, gives some criteria under which one hand is guaranteed to be better than another, and determines the optimal strategies and value functions for the game in several special cases.

    Notes: Summary Southern blot analysis of human genomic DNA hybridized with a coding region aldolase A cDNA probe (600 bases) revealed four restriction fragments with EcoRI restriction enzyme: 7.8 kb, 13 kb, 17 kb and 〉30 kb. By human-hamster hybrid analysis (Southern technique) the principal fragments, 7.8 kb, 13 kb, 〉30 kb, were localized to chromosomes 10, 16 and 3 respectively. The 17-kb fragment was very weak in intensity; it co-segregated with the 〉30-kb fragment and is probably localized on chromosome 3 with the 〉30-kb fragment. Analysis of a second aldolase A labelled probe protected against S1 nuclease digestion by RNAs from different hybrid cells, indicated the presence of aldolase A mRNAs in hybrid cells containing only chromosome 16. Under the stringency conditions used, the EcoRI sequences detected by the coding region aldolase A cDNA probe did not correspond to aldolase B or C. The 7.8-kb and 〉30-kb EcoRI sequences, localized respectively on chromosomes 10 and 3, correspond to aldolase A pseudogenes, the 13-kb EcoRI sequence localized on chromosome 16 corresponds to the aldolase active gene. The fact that the aldolase A gene and pseudogenes are located on three different chromosomes supports the hypothesis that the pseudogenes originated from aldolase A mRNAs, copied into DNA and integrated in unrelated chromosomal loci.

    Notes: Abstract A method for reconstructing radially varying conductivity profiles in cylindrical conductors is described. Solenoidal driving and sensing coils surround the cylindrical sample and an AC magnetic field applied by the driving solenoid induces axisymmetric eddy currents in the sample. It is shown how a radially varying conductivity profile can be recovered from measurements of the complex impedance recorded as a function of frequency, where impedance here is defined as the ratio of the induced electromotive force (EMF) in the sensing coil to the current in the driving coil. An iterative nonlinear least-squares algorithm is employed to reconstruct the profiles. Demonstrations of the reconstruction method are presented based on both simulated and experimentally recorded impedance data.
