Notes: Abstract Spirochetes are structurally unique microorganisms found in the gastrointestinal tracts of most mammals. In an attempt to determine the ecological status of these bacteria, enumeration and distribution of morphologically distinct spirochetes were studied in the tracts of conventional laboratory rats. Five different types were seen to colonize infant rats between 19 and 26 days of age and subsequently to form stable communities in all 15 adults examined. Two types were found predominantly in lumen contents of the large bowel. The other three were consistently seen in the mucous blanket, attached to enterocyte surfaces or deep in the glands of the cecum and proximal colon. One type inhabiting the mucosal environment was also seen to pass into and through epithelial cells with no detectable host response. We conclude that spirochetes fulfill all the criteria for autochthonicity to the rat gastrointestinal tract.

Notes: Summary The acute and short term antihypertensive effect of flosequinan was determined in 16 hypertensive patients whose blood pressure was inadequately controlled despite treatment with a β-adrenoceptor blocking agent and a diuretic. Erect and supine systolic and diastolic blood pressure was significantly reduced by flosequinan over the treatment period as compared to placebo. Heart rate was unchanged by flosequinan. Adverse effects were limited to mild headache in 3 patients and taste disturbance in 1 patient, possibly due to salivary excretion of the drug. Flosequinan is a potentially useful vasodilator for the treatment of hypertension.

Notes: Abstract X-ray scattering techniques have been used to study the diffuse scattering from a single crystal of Rb1−x(ND4)xD2PO4 withx=0.65. This system has a structural glass phase at low temperatures resulting from the competing ferroelectric interactions of RbD2PO4 and antiferroelectric interactions of (ND4)D2PO4. The diffuse scattering shows a broad peak with a maximum occurring at a wavevector of about 0.3a *, and the intensity of these peaks is surprisingly different for wavevectorsq on opposite sides of the Bragg reflections. A model of the D bonding is developed which suggests that the diffuse scattering arises from the interaction between ferroelectric displacements alongc, ferroelectric displacements alongb, and transverse acoustic modes polarized alongb andc. The model accounts for the incommensurate wavevector and, qualitatively, for the intensity of the diffuse scattering around different Bragg reflections. The temperature dependence of the scattering is also measured.

Notes: Abstract X-ray scattering techniques have been used to study the structures of two crystals of Rb1−x (NH4) x H2PO4 withx≃0.2, near to the boundary between ferroelectric and “structural-glass” behavior at low temperature. Below about 83K, both crystals develop shortrange incommensurate correlations with a wavevectorq≃0.13 a * which are presumably related to the glass properties. On cooling below 70 K, the crystal with the slightly larger NH 4 + concentrationx, develops the ferroelectric structure in a small fraction of the crystal, while the bulk of the crystal retains the tetragonal structure. The other crystal transforms almost wholly to the ferroelectric phase. The transition to the ferroelectric structure shows considerable hysteresis on heating and cooling, and is spread over about 20 K. The transition is certainly of first order, and the spread in temperature may arise from concentration fluctuations. These results and the structure of the incommensurate modulations are compared with the predictions of a theoretical model for this system.

Notes: Abstract We have carried out a comprehensive study of the static and dynamic spin-spin correlations of Mn x Zn1−x F2 in a magnetic field. Samples withx=0.75 andx=0.5 have been studied. This system exhibits behavior closely related, if not identical, to that of the Random Field Ising Model (RFIM). An additional feature of Mn x Zn1−x F2 is that it exhibits an easily accessible bicritical point; thus one can study the changeover from the RFIM to the uniformXY model with a transverse random field. Quite generally, the instantaneous spin-spin correlations in a field are described by a combination of Lorentzian, Lorentzian-squared and delta function terms the latter corresponds to the long range order (LRO) component. In the Ising phase one finds history dependent behavior as discussed previously. In theXY phase, except very near the spin-flop boundary, one finds ergodic behavior withXY LRO and Lorentzian squared Ising fluctuations. Rather complicated instability effects are found all along the spin-flop boundary. Further, when one establishes LRO in theXY phase and lowers the field through the spin-flop value, one obtains a LRO Ising state in thex=0.75 sample whereas one obtains the field-cooled domain state in thex=0.50 sample. This dramatic difference in behavior is not understood. Our results on the RFIM aspects of the problem are consistent with our previous studies. The transition is dominated by the metastability effects with an underlying equilibrium transition which is either first order or weakly second order (β≈0). The underlying transition manifests itself directly in measurements of the dynamic response nearT N (H). From the data above the metastability boundary we deduce for the static correlation length exponentv=1.4±0.3 in good agreement with theory. We find for the RFIM crossover exponent φRF=1.5±0.2 where the errors represent the spread in values obtained from different techniques. Finally, we have determined in detail the field-temperature phase diagram of thex=0.5 sample including the critical behavior along the spin-flop line; the latter transition appears to be second order for an extended region.

Notes: Abstract The elastic scattering of α-particles from28Si at incident energies between 5 and 12 MeV (4.4 and 10.5 MeV in the centre-of-mass system) was studied to ascertain whether quasimolecular states exist for the α+28Si system, as predicted in the literature in terms of a microscopic theory based on the generator coordinate method. Angular distributions were obtained for angles larger than 70°, in energy steps of 100 keV. Analysis of the experimental data was performed by coherently adding specific resonances to an underlying optical model which describes the background portion of the direct elastic scattering amplitude. As is usual, it was furthermore assumed that the average compound elastic contribution adds incoherently to the total cross section. In spite of the presence of a resonance characterized by an angular momentum value ofJ=3 in the energy region, as required by theory, no evidence could be found for the existence of other resonances with the expectedJ-sequence. We conclude that our experiment and analysis do not support the predictions of the microscopic theory.
