Notes: Summary It was found that some ciliates,Stentor, Spirostomum andBlepharisma, which can contract rapidly like the stalks of Vorticellidae, have Ca2+-binding proteins that are very similar to spasmins, in the immunological sense. The presence of spasmins in other Protozoa and in some Metazoa was also investigated.

Notes: Summary Polymerization conditions of dl-phenylalanine N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) by m, p-vinylbenzylamine were examined for the preparation of (vinylbenzylimino)oligo(dl-phenylanaline NCA) macromer (VB-OPhe) with narrow molecular weight distribution. According to the results obtained, i.e., under the condition of short polymerization time (ca. 2 h) and in relatively high concentrations of the NCA in THF, the polymerizations of the NCA were carried out to give VB-OPhe macromers, which were found to have very narrow molecular weight distributions. Furthermore, their functionalities were proved to be approximately unity by the polymerization method.

Notes: Abstract We calculate the cross sections of transverse and neutral energy production in the nucleus-nucleus collisions using the additive quark model (AQM) and the wounded nucleon model (WNM). In the case of α−α collisions, the experimental data of the transverse energy (E T ) distribution favor the WNM, whereas those of the total neutral energy and the transverse neutral energy distributions favor the AQM. We predict theE T distributions in the heavy ion collisions using these two models. The AQM and the WNM give the different results.

Notes: Summary The radiosensitization brought about by oridonin, one of theRabdosia diterpenoids, alone or in combination with misonidazole, was investigated in Chinese hamster V79 cells. The enhancement ratio of 1.92 was obtained when 0.01 mM oridonin and 1 mM misonidazole were administered to hypoxic cells under radiation. The enhancement ratios of oridonin and misonidazole for hypoxic cells were 1.16 and 1.59 respectively. Hence, a supra-additive effect was obtained by the combined treatment with these two drugs. Under aerobic conditions, no effect of 0.01 mM oridonin on the radiosensitization caused by misonidazole was observed.

Notes: Abstract Static and dynamic critical behavior ofXY systems in cubic anisotropic crystallines, with extended defects (or quenched nonmagnetic impurities) strongly correlated alongɛ d -dimensional space and randomly distributed ind − ɛ d dimensions, were studied. These extended defects make the systems coordinate anisotropic, resulting in unique critical behavior due to competition between the cubic anisotropy and the coordinate anisotropy. The systems were analyzed by anɛ 1/2 (ɛ≡4 − d) type of expansion with double expansion parameters based on a renormalization-group (RG) approach. Critical exponents were calculated near the second-order phase transition point and the behavior of the first-order transition was evaluated near the tricritical point.

Notes: Abstract The influence of non-uniform fibre spacing on the strength of unidirectional fibre-reinforced metal matrix composites was studied by means of a Monte-Carlo computer simulation experiment. The influence of yield stress of the matrix and scatter of the fibre strength on the strength of composites were also studied for both uniform and non-uniform fibre spacings. It was demonstrated that (1) the strength of composites with non-uniform fibre spacing is lower than that with uniform spacing due to the high stress concentration arising from the breakage of fibres, and (2) the reduction in strength of composites due to the non-uniformity increases with increasing scatter of fibre strength. For both cases of uniform and non-uniform spacings, the following tendencies were observed : (a) the strength of composites increases but then decreases with increasing yield stress of matrix, (b) it is very sensitive to yield stress of the matrix when the scatter of fibre strength is large but not when it is small, and (c) it decreases but then increases with increasing scatter of fibre strength when the yield stress of the matrix is high, while it decreases monotonically with increasing scatter of fibre strength when the yield stress is low.

Notes: Abstract Multiple fracture phenomenon of coating film on ductile metal fibre was studied by means of a computer simulation technique. The simulation experiments were carried out for various combinations of mechanical factors such as strength of coating film. Young's and shear moduli of fibre and coating film, yield stress of fibre and strain hardening coefficient of fibre and geometrical factors such as diameter of fibre and thickness of coating film. The effects of these factors on the number of fractures of the coating film and length of segmented film as a function of applied tensile stress and elongation to failure of coated fibre were clarified.

Notes: Abstract When a coating film on a metal fibre or wire is brittle, it exhibits multiple-fracture under loading. In order to describe the exerted tensile stress on the segments of a coating film as a function of the distance from the end of the segments and as a function of applied stress, a new approximate calculation method is presented, assuming that the interfacial bonding strength is high enough and no interfacial debonding occurs. Using the present calculation method, effects of geometrical factors such as fibre diameter, thickness of coating film and length of segment as well as those of mechanical factors such as Young's modulus, shear modulus and the yield stress of the fibre and the coating film on the exerted tensile stress on the segments and also on the exerted shear stress at the interface are described in a quantitative manner.

Notes: Abstract The crystal growth of Nb3Sn by the bronze method has been investigated by using diffusion couples consisting of niobium and bronze with the addition of third elements. When the specimens were annealed at temperatures between 973 and 1073 K, the time-dependence of layer thickness was represented approximately by the function ofd=kt m . The time exponent changed from 1/3 to unity depending on the annealing condition as well as on the nature of the third element. By the addition of titanium, hafnium, zirconium, indium and galium to the bronze, the growth rate of the compound layer increases. Faster layer growth corresponds to a larger time exponent. The following three processes are suggested to be important for controlling layer growth: diffusivity of tin atoms through grain boundaries in the compound layer, diffusivity of tin atoms through the matrix of the compound, and the rate of the chemical reaction to form the compound. Essentially these combined processes control the overall rate of layer growth. The grain size is found to be the most effective structural parameter to affect directly the maximum global pinning force. The critical current at a magnetic field of 5T can be scaled by both the layer thickness and the inverse grain size.
