Notes: Summary β-Keto esters derived from dipeptides are prepared by application of common methodologies employed for the synthesis of amino acid-derived β-keto esters; however, epimerization of the C-terminal residue occurred to different extents depending on the method. In imidazolide activated dipeptides, this epimerization is due to the CDI activation step and to the configurational instability of the intermediate imidazolides in different reaction media. Regarding yield and diastereomeric purity, the method of choice proved to be the reaction of dipeptide-derived imidazolide with the potassium salt of malonic half esters in the presence of MgCl2.

Notes: Abstract A comparative study of the reproductive ecology of the zooxanthellate, scleractinian corals Porites lobata Dana and P. panamensis Verrill was conducted from 1985 to 1991 in eastern Pacific reef environments that were severly impacted by the 1982–1983 El Niño warming events. P. lobata, a presumed broadcast spawner of large colony size, is widely distributed in the equatorial eastern Pacific, whereas P. panamensis, a brooder of small colony size, is abundant only on some reefs in Panamá. Both species were gonochoric with nearly 1:1 sex ratios in large study populations except for P. lobata at Caño Island that had 14% hermaphroditic colonies. Mature, unfertilized oocytes contained numerous zooxanthellae in both Porites species, and all planula developmental stages contained zooxanthellae in P. panamensis. Year-round sampling revealed high proportions of colonies with gonads, ranging from 30 to 68% in P. lobata and from 60 to 68% in P. panamensis. No clear relationship between numbers of reproductive colonies and the thermal stability of the habitat was evident in P. lobata: percent colonies with gonads at non-upwelling sites was 48 to 68% at Caño Island (Costa Rica) and Uva Island (Panamá), and at upwelling sites 30 to 50% at Saboga Island and Taboga Island (Panamá), and the Galápagos Islands (Ecuador). Similarly, 90% of all P. panamensis colonies were reproductive at Uva Island (a non-upwelling site), and 86% were reproductive at Taboga Island (an upwelling site). Upwelling at Taboga Island is seasonal, nevertheless P. panamensis produced mature gonads or planulae over most of the year (11 mo), whereas P. lobata exhibited reproductive activity during only 2 mo (May and June). No clear lunar periodicity was observed in P. panamensis (Taboga Island), but a high proportion of P. lobata showed increased gonadal development around full and new moon, especially at Caño and Uva Islands. Estimated fecundities were relatively high for P. lobata at Caño (4000 eggs cm-2 yr-1) and Uva (5200 eggs cm-2 yr-1) Islands, and notably low (70 to 110 eggs cm-2 yr-1) in the Galápagos Islands. P. panamensis mean fecundity at Taboga Island was 720 planulae cm-2 yr-1 or 4.0 mm3 cm-2 yr-1, which was lower than the egg volume production of P. lobata at Caño and Uva Islands (7.0 to 10.0 mm3 cm-2 yr-1). The capacity of P. lobata and P. panamensis to reproduce sexually supports the notion that eastern Pacific coral reef recovery may not be dependent on long-distance dispersal from central Pacific areas. However, sexual recruits of P. lobata are absent or uncommon at all eastern Pacific study sites while recruits of P. panamensis were common to abundant only at the Uva Island study site. Asexual fragmentation in P. lobata augments recruitment locally, but plays no role in P. panamensis recruitment.

Notes: Abstract  The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of salinity on the symbiotic efficiencies and mycelial infectivity of two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), one isolated from saline soils (Glomus sp.) and the other (Glomus deserticola) from nonsaline soils (belonging to the Estación Experimental del Zaidín collection). Lettuce plants inoculated with either of these two fungi or maintained as uninoculated controls were grown in soil with three salt concentrations (0.25, 0.50 or 0.75 g NaCl kg–1 dry soil). Both AMF protected host plants against salinity. However, when the results of shoot dry weight and nutrient contents were expressed relative to the total length of mycorrhiza formed, it was found that both AMF differed in their symbiotic efficiencies. These differences were more evident at the two highest salt levels. Glomus sp.-colonized plants grew less and accumulated less N and P, whereas they formed a higher amount of mycorrhiza. The mechanism by which Glomus sp. protected plants from the detrimental effects of salt was based on the stimulation of root development, while the effects of G. deserticola were based on improved plant nutrition. The increase in salinity of soil decreased the hyphal growth and/or viability of Glomus sp. to a higher extent than those of G. deserticola since the mycelial network generated by G. deserticola was more infective than that of Glomus sp.

Notes: Abstract. We present the first undeniable signatures scheme based on RSA. Since their introduction in 1989 a significant amount of work has been devoted to the investigation of undeniable signatures. So far, this work has been based on discrete log systems. In contrast, our scheme uses regular RSA signatures to generate undeniable signatures. In this new setting, both the signature and verification exponents of RSA are kept secret by the signer, while the public key consists of a composite modulus and a sample RSA signature on a single public message. Our scheme possesses several attractive properties. First, provable security, as forging the undeniable signatures is as hard as forging regular RSA signatures. Second, both the confirmation and denial protocols are zero-knowledge. In addition, these protocols are efficient (particularly, the confirmation protocol involves only two rounds of communication and a small number of exponentiations). Furthermore, the RSA-based structure of our scheme provides with simple and elegant solutions to add several of the more advanced properties of undeniable signatures found in the literature, including convertibility of the undeniable signatures (into publicly verifiable ones), the possibility to delegate the ability to confirm and deny signatures to a third party without giving up the power to sign, and the existence of distributed (threshold) versions of the signing and confirmation operations. Due to the above properties and the fact that our undeniable nsignatures are identical in form to standard RSA signatures, the scheme we present becomes a very attractive candidate for practical implementations.

Notes: Summary Transthyretin methionine 30 (TTR Met 30), which is associated with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy, originates in a single base substitution (A for G) in the second exon of the TTR gene. This autosomal dominant disease can be diagnosed by RFLP analysis of NsiI-digested DNA. The amplification of DNA by PCR improves the diagnosis method, making it suitable for prenatal diagnosis. Using PCR-amplified DNA, prenatal diagnosis of two at-risk fetuses was performed. Control Met 30 and normal DNA (either genomic or produced by site directed mutagenesis) were processed in parallel. The diagnosis was made by hybridization with allele-specific oligonucleotide probes, and later confirmed by screening of the mutant protein in the amniotic fluid and, when possible, in the sera from the newborns. TTR Met 30 was detected in the amniotic fluid of a positive fetus whose father was the carrier of the mutation. This indicates that the mutant protein is expressed very early in development.

Notes: Summary RFLPs of 36 normal and 41 mutant alleles at the phenylalanine hydroxylase locus were determined in 31 Portuguese kindreds. A total of 14 haplotypes including 10 normal and 7 mutant alleles were observed. Almost 75% of all mutant alleles were confined within only two haplotypes, namely haplotype 9 (17.1%) and haplotype 1 (56.1%). This frequency of mutant haplotype 1 in Portugal is, to our knowledge, the highest for this mutant haplotype in all studies reported to date. Other mutant haplotypes were either rare (haplotype 2, 9.7%) or totally absent (haplotype 3, 0%). Only 24.5% of all mutant alleles were found to consistently carry identified mutations, particularly R261Q (9.8%), R252W (3.3%), R408W (1.6%) and ΔI94 (3.3%). A new mutation, L249F, located in the seventh exon of the gene, accounted for 6.5% of all mutant alleles in our series. Interestingly, this mutant genotype was consistently associated with mutant haplotype 1 (P〈0.01), as also observed for the R261Q mutation. It appears, therefore, that mutant haplotype 1 is genotypically heterogeneous in Portugal and that more than two mutations account for its prevalence in this country.

Notes: Abstract A number of Xp22;Yq11 translocations involving the transposition of Yq material to the distal short arm of the X chromosome have been described. The reciprocal product, i.e. the derivative Y chromosome resulting from the translocation of a portion of Xp to Yq, has never been recovered. We searched for this reciprocal product by performing dosage analysis of Xp22-pter loci in 9 individuals carrying a non-fluorescent Y chromosome. In three mentally retarded and dysmorphic patients, dosage analysis indicated the duplication of Xp22 loci. Use of the highly polymorphic probe CRI-S232 demonstrated the inheritance of paternal Xp-specific alleles in the probands. In situ hybridization, performed in one case, confirmed that 29CL pseudoautosomal sequences were present, in addition to Xpter and Ypter, in the telomeric portion of Yq. To our knowledge, these are the first cases in which the translocation of Xp material to Yq has been demonstrated. The X and Y breakpoints were mapped in the three patients by dosage and deletion analysis. The X breakpoint falls, in the three cases, in a region of Xp22 that is not recognized as sharing sequence similarities with the Y chromosome, thus suggesting that these translocations are not the result of a homologous recombination event.
