Notes: Abstract The optical gap of the amorphous In x Se1−x thin film has been observed to decrease with increasing content of indium in the film (x). An attempt is made to interpret the compositional dependence of the optical gap in amorphous In x Se1−x thin film in an alloy-like approach. It has been found that introduction of higher concentrations of indium imparts greater stability to the structure of the indium selenium alloy. From the study of the radial distribution function (RDF) by X-rays it is observed that there is a correlation between the coordination number and the optical gap of indium selenide thin films.

Notes: Abstract Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) was employed to determine Y, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho and Er in high purity terbium oxide. Terbium oxide was dissolved in 0.5 mol/l HNO3 and nebulized into the plasma generated by a 56 MHz RF generator at 1.5 kW output power. Using a Jobin-Yvon 1-m Czenry-Turner high resolution, high dispersion scanning monochromator, lines mutually interference-free as well as free of interference from the matrix Tb were chosen for the seven analytes. A set of standards containing the analytes in the concentration range 0.01–1.0 gmg/ml with 1 mg/ml Tb was used for calibration. It was necessary to apply background correction to the gross analyte line intensities in order to obtain linear calibration plots for the analytes.

Notes: Summary Pyromellitic dianhydride and dipyridyl/dipyridylamine have been polycondensed in presence of anhydrous ZnCl2 under selective conditions. Fe(III), Cr(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes of the polycondensates have been prepared. Tentative structures for PMDA-DP (DPA)-M complexes have been proposed on the basis of elemental IR and electronic spectral analyses.

    Notes: Summary Thermal stabilities of these polymers are influenced by the nature of the 3d-metal and their initial decomposition temperatures are between 230–290°C in general. The dielectric constant values are essentially independent of the applied frequency and at 104 KHz reveal the trend: $$PMDA\mathop { - DP - }\limits_{(9.2)} Cr\left. {(III)} \right\rangle {\text{ PM}}\mathop {{\text{DA - D}}}\limits_{{\text{(8}}{\text{.7)}}} {\text{P - Fe}}\left. {{\text{(III)}}} \right\rangle {\text{ PM}}\mathop {{\text{DA - D}}}\limits_{{\text{(8}}{\text{.1)}}} {\text{P - Cu}}\left. {{\text{(II)}}} \right\rangle {\text{ P}}\mathop {{\text{MDA}}}\limits_{{\text{(8}}{\text{.0)}}} {\text{ - DP}}$$ Values for dielectric loss (tan δ) for these polymers are low (1–4×10-2 at 10 KHz) and unlike the dielectric constant, are strongly dependent on the applied frequency. The d.c.-conductivities of the polymers are in the range 4.5×10-8 – 4.7×10-10 (ohm-cm)-1 and depend on the metal ions: $$\left. {Fe^{3 + } } \right\rangle \left. {Cr^{3 + } } \right\rangle \left. {Ni^{2 + } } \right\rangle Cu^{2 + } $$

Notes: Abstract The multiple photon dissociation of ppm level CTCl3 in CDCl3 and the selectivity of T/D separation were investigated using a pulsed ammonia laser. The effect of laser frequency, fluence and buffer gas pressure on the dissociation rate and isotopic selectivity were studied. The depletion of CDCl3 was not observed within experimental errors. A lower limit of single step selectivity factor was found to be 〉5000 at 133 Pa substrate pressure.

Notes: Abstract The sound velocity in liquid ethanol has been measured up to 280 MPa and at temperatures between 193 and 263 K, using a phase-comparison, pulse-echo technique operating at 2 MHz. The density, isothermal compressibility, isobaric thermal expansion coefficient, and specific heat have been evaluated from the measured speed of sound starting from the density and specific heat data at 0.1 MPa and making use of a modified computational method originally developed by Davis and Gordon. The derived density data have been used to examine the validity of several empirical equations of state.

Notes: Abstract Many arid and semi-arid countries are feeling water crisis already at present, and the problem will become more serious in the 21st century. Global water consumption will increase, 10-fold during this century, and the increasing trend will continue well into the 21st century. This Presidential Address to the International Water Reserves Association discusses the reasons for the water crisis, and the major water issues of the 21st century. Among those issues are water conservation and efficient use of water, water pricing and cost recovery, social and environmental considerations, institutional responses to better management, management of international water bodies and proper analytical frameworks.

Notes: Abstract We study resonant pair production in a strong electric field using the complex-time multiple reflection technique. The result is used to explain the occurrence of hadronic-like states ofe + e − andγγ observed in the collision of heavy-ion nuclei. It is suggested that the unusual em background created by the heavy-ion nuclei is equivalent to a gravitational background. We also explain the experimental low-lying bound states, using our approach.
