    Notes: Abstract The authors review and categorize the research in applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and expert systems (ES) in new product development (NPD) activities. A brief overview of NPD process and AI is presented. This is followed by a literature survey in regard to AI and ES applications in NPD, which revealed twenty four articles (twenty two applications) in the 1990–1997 period. The applications are categorized into five areas: expert decision support systems for NPD project evaluation, knowledge-based systems (KBS) for product and process design, KBS for QFD, AI support for conceptual design and AI support for group decision making in concurrent engineering. Brief review of each application is provided. The articles are also grouped by NPD stages and seven NPD core elements (competencies and abilities). Further research areas are pointed out.

    Notes: Abstract   Elicitors of both fungal and bacterial origin that is, polysaccharides, proteins and fatty acids, are widely used for enhancement of secondary metabolites in plant cell cultures. In the present study, phycocyanin – a natural blue pigment that is the major light-harvesting biliprotein in the blue-green alga Spirulina platensis– was used as an elicitor to enhance the accumulation of capsaicin and anthocyanin in Capsicum frutescens and Daucus carota cell cultures respectively. Phycocyanin at 0.3, 0.6 and 1.2 mg% in capsicum cell cultures elicited a more than two-fold increase in capsaicin content with maximum productivity of 192 μg/g fresh weight. Similarly in Daucus carota cell cultures a two-fold increase in anthocyanin content was obtained at 0.3 mg% with a maximum productivity of 24.8 mg% on a dry-weight basis. In both the systems, phycocyanin showed an early elicitation of secondary metabolites.

    Notes: Abstract Intraplate stresses and intraplate seismicity in the Indian subcontinent are strongly affected by the continued convergence between India and Eurasia. The mean orientation of the maximum horizontal compression in the Indian subcontinent is subparallel to the direction of the ridge push at the plate boundary as well as to the direction of compression expected to arise from the net resistive forces at the Himalayan collision zone, indicating that the intraplate stresses in the subcontinent, including the shield area, are caused by plate tectonic processes. Spatial distribution of historic and instrumentally recorded earthquakes indicate that the seismic activity is mostly confined to linear belts while the remaining large area of the shield is stable. The available conventional heat flow data and other indicators of heat flow suggest hotter geotherms in the linear belts, leading to amplification of stresses in the upper brittle crust. Many of the faults in these linear belts, which happen to be 200–80 m.y. old, are being reactivated either in a strike-slip or thrust-faulting mode. The reactivation mechanisms have been analyzed by taking into consideration the amplification of stresses, pore pressures, geological history of the faults and their orientation with respect to the contemporaneous stress field. The seismicity of the Indian shield is explained in terms of these reactivation mechanisms.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Vorgestellt wird ein halbempirisches Modell für das Behältersieden über porösen Oberflächen. Die Berechnung des Druckabfalls in der porösen Schicht erfolgt gemäß dem Gesetz von Darcy. Der Einfluß des Latentwärmeflusses bei hochporösen Oberflächen wird untersucht. Unter Verwendung von Daten aus der Literatur werden die für die Keimbildung wichtigen Faktoren definiert und zu meßbaren Größen in Beziehung gesetzt. Für den Gesamtwärmefluß läßt sich ein Ausdruck finden, der diesen in Abhängigkeit von Wandüberhitzung, Porengeometrie und den physikalischen Eigenschaften der Fls¨üssigkeit bestimmt. Das vorgestellte Modell liefert Ergebnisse, die gut mit aus vier Quellen entnommenen␣Literaturdaten bezüglich Behältersieden über porösen Oberflächen übereinstimmen, und zwar sowohl für ebene Oberflächen wie auch für Rohre.
    Notes: Abstract A semi-empirical model for pool boiling over porous surfaces is presented. The pressure drop across the porous surface is estimated using Darcy 's law. The significance of the latent heat flux contribution for highly porous surfaces is examined. Two nucleation factors are defined and correlated in terms of measurable quantities using literature data. An expression for the total heat flux in terms of the wall superheat, pore geometry and the physical properties of the liquid is presented. The present model matches well with literature data on pool boiling over porous surfaces, both flat surfaces and tubes from four different sources, thus validating the present approach.

    Notes: Abstract Cultivated sugarcane clones (Saccharum spp., 2n=100 to 130) are derived from complex interspecific hybridizations between the speciesS. officinarum andS. spontaneum. Using comparative genomic DNA in situ hybridization, we demonstrated that it is possible to distinguish the chromosomes contributed by these two species in an interspecific F1 hybrid and a cultivated clone, R570. In the interspecific F1 studied, we observed n+n transmission of the parental chromosomes instead of the peculiar 2n+n transmission usually described in such crosses. Among the chromosomes of cultivar R570 (2n=107–115) about 10% were identified as originating fromS. spontaneum and about 10% were identified as recombinant chromosomes between the two speciesS. officinarum andS. spontaneum. This demonstrated for the first time the occurrence of recombination between the chromosomes of these two species. The rDNA sites were located by in situ hybridization in these two species and the cultivar R570. This supported different basic chromosome numbers and chromosome structural differences between the two species and provided a first bridge between physical and genetical mapping in sugarcane.
