Description: Seismic imaging need not be synonymous with or rely on the presence of reflectors in the Earth. Much can be gleaned from the nonreflected wavefield. For example, direct waves map out smooth velocity variations in crosswell seismic tomography, wide-angle refracted waves play a crucial role in full waveform inversion (Hole et al., 2005), and surface waves provide unmatched sensitivity to near-surface shear-wave velocity structure. Guided waves exist in both cracks (Korneev, 2008) and boreholes, the latter referred to as tube waves. The famous Biot slow wave is itself a guided-wave phenomenon akin to a tube wave (Norris, 1987). Surface-wave dispersion has a long history in seismology and was the first seismic characteristic to be subjected to an automated inversion procedure (Dorman and Ewing, 1962).

Description: Hats off to the organizers of the third International Conference on Engineering Geophysics (ICEG) held 15–18 November 2015 in Al Ain, UAE. Once again, this group of local university, government, and society advocates for geophysics delivered an unrivaled conference experience to the global community of applied near-surface geophysicists. The success of the conference stems from blending an internationally renowned collection of geophysical researchers, practitioners, and regulators — representing a broad range of specialties — into a diverse and captivating technical program.

Description: A high-resolution seismic-reflection investigation mapped reflectors and identified characteristics influencing the hydrogeology underlying a portion of the Oxnard Plain in Ventura County, California. Design and implementation of this study was heavily influenced by high levels of cultural noise from vehicles, power lines, roads, manufacturing facilities, and underground utilities/vaults. An abundance of very high quality reflections within the optimum window on shot gathers allowed accurate velocity analysis and statics corrections, which resulted in consistent and coherent common-midpoint (CMP)-stacked reflections with minimal wavelet degradation. Acquisition and processing flows were tailored to this noisy environment and relatively shallow target interval. Layering within both upper and lower aquifer systems was delineated at a vertical resolution potential of about 2.5 m at 350 m depth. Discontinuities in bedding with significant impact on the groundwater flow, particularly related to saltwater intrusion from agricultural pumping near the coast, were delineated on CMP-stacked sections and correlated to widely separated boring data, thereby providing continuity and realism to hydrologic models.

Description: For the average geophysicist strolling the streets of Houston, the mention of archaeology more than likely conjures up images of that pistol-and-whip-packing adventure hero Indiana Jones. After a moment to ponder, most in our geophysicist sample set roust up cloudy memories of documentary or news stories where geophysics was mentioned as a tool supporting the recovery of buried antiquities or discovery of long-sealed burial vaults. No doubt the allure and mystery associated with many modern archaeological digs or expeditions comes almost exclusively from the find—the discovery, the story—relegating applied geophysics (many times the real unsung hero) to second billing or footnotes.

Description: Complexities of today's water challenges rival any faced in the world of applied geophysics. Unfortunately, after a quick glance into the crystal ball, these problems look to do nothing but escalate as time marches on. It seems, with ever-increasing frequency, questions and needs more probing and demanding keep floating to the surface, each with seemingly unfathomable goals. For example, it has become common on contaminant investigations to request/require not only identification of potential source locations but delineation of actual volumes within an aquifer. Or let's not forget the frequent requests to tackle the daunting task of monitoring and predicting flow and transport characteristics in highly variable and complex aquifers. As the demands for water increase, hydrogeophysicists will continue to be asked to examine stifling problems given the most recent advances and capabilities technology has to offer.

Description: Urban geophysics ups the ante in the world of applied geophysics, if for no other reason than the settings. The objectives and associated challenges are the same as other applications: to characterize, image, delineate, detect, resolve, etc. But it is the arena that makes the job of the urban geophysicist not one for the timid. It is a job that requires innovative thinking and seemingly off-the-wall approaches. Geophysical warriors who take on these daunting missions are cut from a unique cloth, the Team 6 of the applied geophysical community. Well, maybe that is a bit over the top, but as you will see in this special section, meeting the data challenges of urban settings and dealing with associated human sprawl requires problem-solving that clearly steps well beyond anything they tried to teach us in school.
