    Notes: Abstract In Part 1 we obtained lower and upper bounds of the expressionf(M φ(x;α),M ψ(y;α))−M χ(f(x,y);α) by replacing the given sets(x)=(x 1,...,x n ),(y)=(y 1,...,y n ) by two suitably chosen sets ((u)=(u 1,...,u m ),(v)=(v 1,...,v m ), in general withm≥4. Now, in the case of upper bounds, the numberm will, under additional hypotheses, be reduced tom=3 (§ 4) and finally tom=2 (§ 5). Inequalities, complementary to the inequalities of Hölder and Minkowski and to another inequality are given as illustrations.

    Notes: Abstract Using symmetric forms $$M_{k_1 ,...,k_p } : = (1/A(n))\,\sum\limits_{v_1 ,...,v_p } {a_{v_1 }^{k_1 } ...a_{v_p }^{k_p } } $$ A(n)=number of terms of the sum,a ν〉0,k i≠0,i=1,...,n) the meansm k 1,...,kp:=(Mk 1,...,kp1/(k1+...+kp)(k1+...+kp≠0) are formed and investigated as to monotonicity under the hypothesis that the exponentsk 1,...,k p are certain linear functions of only one parameterk(k i =λ i k+β 1,λ i 〉0,β 1+...β p =0). (The means $$m_{\lambda _1 k_1 ,...,\lambda _1 k_p } $$ , e. g., are increasing ifk is increasing.) The proofs are elementary and use the known method of positive logarithmically convex (or concave) sequences and certain generalizations of Muirhead's theorem.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary During three trips across the Tanezrouft desert, in spring 1973 and 1977 (Fig. 1), migrating palaearctic birds were observed and fallouts recorded (Tab. 1). ForStreptopelia turtur, Merops apiaster, Calandrella brachydactyla, Oenanthe oenanthe, andCercotrichas galactotes regular intermediate stops in the desert are discussed. 20 exhausted or dead migrants, and 18 control birds, were analyzed for fat content, water content (Tab. 2), and chlorinated hydrocarbon residues. Small birds in Tanezrouft had failed because of exhausted fat stores, larger birds apparently because of water deprivation, while their fat reserves were not exhausted. Pesticide residues had no demonstrable influence on mortality. All migrants in the desert had low water indices. 42 (4 %) out of 1062 observed migrants (only a small fraction of the total number of migrating birds at the same localities and at the same time) had failed. The real mortality rate during the crossing of the western Sahara might usually be far below these 4 %, and especially low in some species, e. g.Merops apiaster, Calandrella brachydactyla, Cercotrichas galactotes, warblers.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Bei drei Durchquerungen der Tanezrouft-Wüste im März und April 1973 und 1977 wurden durchziehende paläarktische Vögel beobachtet, gezählt und Verluste erfaßt. FürStreptopelia turtur, Merops apiaster, Calandrella brachydactyla, Oenanthe oenanthe, Cercotrichas galactotes wird die Möglichkeit regelmäßiger Zwischenlandungen diskutiert. 20 erschöpft gegriffene oder tot gefundene Durchzügler sowie 18 Kontrolltiere wurden u. a. auf Fettgehalt, Wassergehalt und Rückstände chlorierter Kohlenwasserstoffe untersucht. Kleinvögel waren in der Tanezrouft am aufgezehrten Fettdepot gescheitert, größere Vögel am Wasserverlust bei hohen Fettreserven. Biozidrückstände waren ohne nachweisbaren Einfluß auf die Mortalität. Die Wasserindices aller untersuchten Durchzügler aus der Wüste waren erniedrigt. Von 1062 beobachteten Zugvögeln (das ist nur ein Bruchteil der dort in der Beobachtungszeit zu erwartenden Durchzügler) hatten 42 (4 %) versagt. Die tatsächlichen Mortalitätsraten bei der Überquerung der Westsahara dürften gewöhnlich weit unter diesen 4 % liegen, besonders niedrig bei manchen Arten, wieMerops apiaster, Calandrella brachydactyla, Cercotrichas galactotes, Grasmücken- und Laubsängerarten.

    Notes: Abstract The electro-reduction of oxygen is effectively catalysed by metal chelates of the N4-type. The mechanism of this process has been found to be a modified ‘redox catalysis’. O2 molecules and the products of their reaction, at least up to H2O2, remain strongly co-ordinated to the central metal ion of the chelates XMeII. The potential-determining step, which regenerates the reduced form, is the following: (XMeIII...O2H)++H++ 2e→XMeII+H2O2. H2O2 is further decomposed via the catalase action of the electrocatalyst. The mechanism is confirmed by experimental results with iron phthalocyanine (FePc) and cobalt-dibenzotetraazaannulene (CoTAA) as a O2-slurry electrode at various O2 pressures. The latter shows anodic reaction-limited currents, which seem to involve also oxygen-containing intermediates. The implication of the presented mechanism in regard to other electrochemical processes is discussed briefly.

    Notes: Abstract Structure is observed in recoil velocity distributions of potassium atoms scattered inelastically from N2 and CO molecules at CMS anglesϑ〉π/2 and collision energies 0.34≦E≦1.24 eV. It is caused by rotational excitation mainly. Individual rotational transitions are not resolved. The quasi-continuous recoil velocity distributions extend between well defined bounds, the upper corresponding to elastic scattering, the lower marking a largest amount of energy transferred into molecular rotation at givenϑ andE. This maximal transfer increases with angle and — forE≳0.64 eV — in near proportion toE. At allϑ andE it is larger for CO than forN 2, amounting to about 0.42E forN 2 and 0.64E for CO atϑ=150°. At or very close to each of their bounds the distributions exhibit pronounced maxima. A third intermediate maximum is present for CO, but missing for N2. The scattering in these experiments is dominated by the repulsive core of the interaction potential. On the basis of classical scattering from a rigid, ellipsoidal, initially nonrotating potential shell, the observations can be qualitatively understood as follows: The recoil velocity dependence of the orientation averaged cross section at fixed observation angle will exhibit classical, integrable singularities at extremal amounts of rotational energy transfer. If the center of symmetry of the shell coincides with the center of mass of the molecule, there will be two such extremal transfers,ΔE=0 and a largest transfer possible at the chosen angle. If the centers do not coincide, the singularity at the largest transfer will split into two, one corresponding to the short, the other to the long “lever arm” of the shell. K + N2 is an example of the centrical, K+CO of the excentrical case. The finite energy losses, at which the singularities occur, are — at each angle — strongly dependent on the anisotropy and excentricity of the shell.
