    Description: In the Arctic, the currently observed rising air temperature results in more frequent calving of icebergs. The latter derive from tidewater glaciers. Arctic macrozoobenthic soft-sediment communities are considerably disturbed by direct hits and sediment reallocation caused by iceberg scouring. With the aim to describe the primary succession of macrozoobenthic communities following these events, scientific divers installed 28 terracotta containers in the soft-sediment off Brandal (Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, Norway) at 20 m water depth in 2002. The containers were filled with a bentonite–sand mixture resembling the natural sediment. Samples were taken annually between 2003 and 2007. A shift from pioneering species (e.g. Cumacea: Lamprops fuscatus) towards more specialised taxa, as well as from surface detritivores towards subsurface detritivores was observed. This is typical for an ecological succession following the facilitation and inhibition succession model. Similarity between experimental and non-manipulated communities from 2003 was significantly highest after 3 years of succession. In the following years, similarity decreased, probably due to elevated temperatures, which prevented the fjord system from freezing. Some organisms, numerically important in the non-manipulated community (e.g. the polychaete Dipolydora quadrilobata) did not colonise the substrate during the experiment. This suggests that the community had not fully matured within the first 3 years. Later, the settlement was probably impeded by consequences of rising temperatures. This demonstrates the long-lasting effects of severe disturbances on Arctic macrozoobenthic communities. Furthermore, environmental changes, such as rising temperatures coupled with enhanced food availability due to an increasing frequency of sea-ice-free days per year, may have a stronger effect on succession than exposure time.

    Description: Ascidians are abundant and well-represented members of worldwide benthic communities, including Antarctica and the Arctic. These organisms exhibit different reproductive patterns usually related to a latitudinal gradient, as do many marine invertebrate species. Reproductive seasonality varies from one or two annual peaks in cold and temperate water species to continuous reproduction throughout the year in warm water species. Styela rustica (Linnaeus 1767) and Halocynthia pyriformis (Rathke 1806) are solitary species with external fertilization and a wide distribution range, from the North Atlantic to the Arctic. The reproductive patterns of these two species were assessed for Arctic populations by year-round sampling and structural analysis of the gonads. Both species are hermaphrodites and showed marked seasonality in oocyte maturity and spawning; S. rustica peaked during the boreal summer and H. pyriformis in late spring. The two species also showed marked differences in mature oocyte sizes: H. pyriformis almost doubled those of S. rustica and, while spermatocytes of H. pyriformis were mature year-round, the maturity of male and female gametes was synchronized in S. rustica. The species thus showed an annual reproductive cycle coupled with a higher production period in the ecosystem, but also exhibited different strategies developed under the same environmental pressures.

    Description: In order to reveal the structure of the sparsely known deeper sublittoral hard bottom communities of glacial Kongsfjorden the macroepibenthos from six depth zones (30m - 200m) was analysed. A total 180 still images derived from six hours‘ video recorded at the Kongsfjordneset remotely operated vehicle station were assessed quantitatively. Overall 27 mainly suspension-feeding species/taxa were observed. Of these, two-thirds have an arcto-boreal distribution while the remainder are cosmopolitan. The overall mean epibenthos abundance was 33 ind. m-2 with maximum values at 150m depth (97.9 ind. m-2). The majority of the taxa inhabited the entire depth range. Encrusting red algae, an unidentified sponge and the sea anemone Urticina eques characterized the assemblage of the shallow zone. The sea anemones Hormathia spp. were important below 30m, the Serpulid polychaete Protula tubularia was characteristic for the community below 50m, and the demosponge Haliclona sp. was a key taxon between 100m and 200m depth. Cluster analysis and non-metrical multidimensional scaling based on abundance data showed differences between the assemblages along the bathymetric gradient, but only in the shallower depths in relation to the substratum surface incline. As surface and tidal current impacts attenuate with increasing depth, there is a gradual trend from robust key species towards more fragile ones (i.e. Protula tubularia), in line with the ‘Physical control hypothesis’.

    Description: Increasing dissolution of anthropogenic-released carbon dioxide into the world’s oceans is causing ocean acidification (OA). OA is thought to negatively affect most marine-calcifying organisms, notably cold-water corals (CWC), which may be especially sensitive due to the deep and cold waters they normally thrive in. However, the impact of OA on CWC is difficult to predict. Recorded distributions of CWC are rarely linked to in situ water chemistry, and the boundaries of their distributions are not clearly defined. The fjord Comau in Chilean Patagonia features pronounced pH gradients, and up to 0.5 pH units have been recorded both vertically (at some sites within 50 m depth) and less distinct horizontally (from head to mouth). The cosmopolite coral Desmophyllum dianthus grows along the course of the fjord and of the entire pH range. It occurs in shallow depths (below 12 m, pH 8.1) as part of a deep-water emergence community, but also in 225 m depth at a pH of 7.4. Based on pH and totalalkalinity, data calculations of the associated carbonate chemistry revealed that this CWC thrives commonly close the aragonite (the orthogonal crystal form of calcium carbonate, the mineral structure of coral skeletons) saturation horizon and even below. This suggests a high adaptation potential of D. dianthus to adjust its calcification performance to conditions thermodynamically unfavourable for the precipitation of aragonite.

    Description: Macrocystis pyrifera kelp beds play a significant ecological role along the coast of Chile. Besides their importance as food, protection structures, substrata, microhabitats and nurseries, regularly occurring natural disturbances (e.g. extremes of the climate variability El Niño–Southern Oscillation) and increased kelp exploitation affect these habitats. The present study aimed to test the dependence of reef fishes on Macrocystis pyrifera and to evaluate the effect of an enhanced habitat structure (experimental M. pyrifera bed) on the abundance, composition and spatial distribution on rock, on macroalgae, in the water column and on sand of the reef fish community. Boulders colonised by M. pyrifera were transported into three replicated experimental areas (9 m2 each) located in a barren ground area. Three barren ground areas (9m2 each) without manipulation were selected as controls. The fish abundance, composition and spatial distribution on rock, on macroalgae, in the water column and on sand were recorded weekly by scuba diving over a period of 3 months, between 15 February 2007 and 13 June 2007 (4 months). Results indicate significantly higher abundances (mean = 225%) of fishes in the forested areas compared to the barren ground controls (mean = 3.71 fishes/9 m2 and 1.14 fishes/9 m2, respectively). Scartichthys gigas/viridis, Chromis crusma, Cheilodactylus variegatus and Isacia conceptionis numerically dominated the fish assemblages of the experimental kelp patches. Each fish species revealed different distributions in the forested areas: Scartichthys gigas/viridis was more abundant on rocks and C. variegatus in the macroalgae, whereas C. crusma and I. conceptionis preferred the water column above the experimental kelp bed. During the experimental time, the kelp lost some blades and some plants became detached. The overall number of fishes correlated with the declining kelp abundance (r = 0.964, p 〈 0.05). The fish species showed different responses to these changes in the experimental areas: C. variegatus and I. conceptionis declined in abundance, whereas the abundance of Scartichthys gigas/viridis remained constant.

    Description: Near-bottom zooplankton communities have rarely been studied despite numerous reports of high zooplankton concentrations, probably due to methodological constraints. In Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, the near-bottom layer was studied for the first time by combining daytime deployments of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), the optical zooplankton sensor moored on-sight key species investigation (MOKI), and Tucker trawl sampling. ROV data from the fjord entrance and the inner fjord showed high near-bottom abundances of euphausiids with a mean concentration of 17.3 ± 3.5 n x 100 m^-3. With the MOKI system, we observed varying numbers of euphausiids, amphipods, chaetognaths, and copepods on the seafloor at six stations. Light-induced zooplankton swarms reached densities in the order of 90,000 (euphausiids), 120,000 (amphipods), and 470,000 ind m^-3 (chaetognaths), whereas older copepodids of Calanus hyperboreus and C. glacialis did not respond to light. They were abundant at the seafloor and 5 and 15 m above and showed maximum abundance of 65,000 ind m^-3. Tucker trawl data provided an overview of the seasonal vertical distribution of euphausiids. The most abundant species Thysanoessa inermis reached near-bottom concentrations of 270 ind m^-3. Regional distribution was neither related to depth nor to location in the fjord. The taxa observed were all part of the pelagic community. Our observations suggest the presence of near-bottom macrozooplankton also in other regions and challenge the current view of bentho–pelagic coupling. Neglecting this community may cause severe underestimates of the stock of pelagic zooplankton, especially predatory species, which link secondary production with higher trophic levels.

    Description: Scleractinian corals feature both sessile and mobile stages and diverse modes of development. In some cases, development can be reversed. Examples include polyp detachment in response to environmental stress (bail-out or polyp expulsion) and reverse metamorphosis, where juveniles detach from the primary skeleton and revert to the mobile stage. Here, we provide aquaria and field evidence of a new form of reverse development: polyp dropout in the solitary cold-water coral Caryophyllia huinayensis. It features tissue retraction and detachment of an entire adult polyp from the skeleton in the putative absence of a stressor. The dropout polyp remains viable and continues to live for many weeks, albeit in a rather collapsed state lacking a well-developed hydroskeleton. We carried out a long-term (37 months) rearing experiment under constant aquaria conditions and found polyp dropout in four out of 83 individuals. Detachment was accompanied by the extrusion of mesenterial filaments through perforations in the body wall. We believe this resulted in the loss of the hydroskeleton, which prevented the dropouts to subsequently resettle or form a new skeleton. As opposed to other known forms of reverse development, the new form is not accompanied by reversible metamorphosis, abandonment of the colonial way of life, nor is it a survival or asexual reproduction strategy. We found field indications of polyp dropout in Patagonian field populations of C. huinayensis, where 1.4 ± 0.8% (mean ± SD, N = 9322) of the polyps of the natural population showed partial detachment indicative of imminent dropout in the putative absence of external impact. Polyp dropout is the first record of polyp detachment in a solitary CWC with possible repercussions for adult coral mobility, evolution and Stanley’s (2003) ‘naked coral’ hypothesis.
