Description: Seven new cucurbitane glucosides, hemslepensides J-P ( 1 – 7 ), and two known compounds, 16,25- O -diacetyl-cucurbitane F ( 8 ) and 25- O -acetyl-23,24-dihydrocucurbitacin F ( 9 ), were isolated from the tubers of Hemsleya pengxianensis var. jinfushanensis . The structures of 1 – 7 were elucidated using infrared absorption spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The treatment of HT29 cells, human colon cancer cells, with compounds 8 and 9 inhibited cell proliferation. Further study demonstrated that compounds 8 and 9 induced F-actin aggregation, G 2 /M phase cell cycle arrest and cell apoptosis in HT29 cells. In summary, the present study enriched the chemical composition research of H. pengxianensis , and suggested that the compounds 8 / 9 treatment may be a potentially useful therapeutic option for colon cancer.

Description: Groundwater is an important factor of slope stability, and 90% of slope failures are related to the influence of groundwater. In the past, free surface calculations and the prediction of water inflow were based on Darcy's law. However, Darcy's law for steady fluid flow is a special case of non-Darcy flow, and many types of non-Darcy flows occur in practical engineering applications. In this paper, based on the experimental results of laboratory water seepage tests, the seepage state of each soil layer in the open-pit slope of the Yanshan Iron Mine, China, were determined, and the seepage parameters were obtained. The seepage behaviour in the silt layer, fine sand layer, silty clay layer and gravelly clay layer followed the traditional Darcy law, while the gravel layers showed clear nonlinear characteristics. The permeability increases exponentially and the non-Darcy coefficient decreases exponentially with an increase in porosity, and the relation among the permeability, the porosity and the non-Darcy coefficient is investigated. A coupled mathematical model is established for two flow fields, on the basis of Darcy flow in the low-permeability layers and Forchheimer flow in the high-permeability layers. In addition, the effect of the seepage in the slope on the transition from Darcy flow to Forchheimer flow was considered. Then, a numerical simulation was conducted by using finite-element software (FELAC 2.2). The results indicate that the free surface calculated by the Darcy–Forchheimer model is in good agreement with the in situ measurements; however, there is an evident deviation of the simulation results from the measured data when the Darcy model is used. Through a parameter sensitivity analysis of the gravel layers, it can be found that the height of the overflow point and the water inflow calculated by the Darcy–Forchheimer model are consistently less than those of the Darcy model, and the discrepancy between these two models increases as the permeability increases. The necessity of adopting the Darcy–Forchheimer model was explained. The Darcy–Forchheimer model would be applicable in slope engineering applications with highly permeable rock.

Description: Photodegradation is one of the key factors that affect bamboo material application in the exterior environment. Photo radiation will cause chemical degradation, discoloration and cracks on the bamboo surface, thus resulting in weakened strength. The study imitated the accelerated weathering effect of Moso bamboo in sunlight by using UV 313 light. Results showed that after UV irradiation, lignin content decreased sharply. Lignin degradation products are commonly rich in double bonds conjugated with benzene rings; they absorb UV light and shift surface spectral absorbency from the visible to the UV region and play an important role in the first stage of reddish-yellow discoloration. The photochemical reactions were very rapid at the beginning and then slowed down after one week. The degraded products covered the surface and protected the inner layer from further degradation. The surface colour turned grey and lighter with erosion of degradation products when the experimental time was extended.

Description: A novel well-dispersed Pd@HHSS catalyst was synthesized by reduction of Pd(OAc) 2 immobilized on HHSS we reported. When the ratios of Pd/SiO 2 were 5 : 100 and 10 : 100, the Pd nanoparticles size was about 5–10 nm. The Pd@HHSS catalyst (Pd/SiO 2 = 10 : 100) showed high catalytic activity in Suzuki-reaction with yields of 91–99% and the catalyst is reusable after four successive cycles without obvious loss of catalytic activity.

Description: Ce-Mn/TiO 2 catalyst prepared using a simple impregnation method demonstrated a better low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH 3 (NH 3 –SCR) activity in comparison with the sol-gel method. The Ce-Mn/TiO 2 catalyst loading with 20% Ce had the best low-temperature activity and achieved a NO conversion rate higher than 90% at 140–260°C with a 99.7% NO conversion rate at 180°C. The Ce-Mn/TiO 2 catalyst only had a 6% NO conversion rate decrease after 100 ppm of SO 2 was added to the stream. When SO 2 was removed from the stream, the catalyst was able to recover completely. The crystal structure, morphology, textural properties and valence state of the metals involving the novel catalysts were investigated using X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption and desorption analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. The decrease of NH 3 –SCR performance in the presence of 100 ppm SO 2 was due to the decrease of the surface area, change of the pore structure, the decrease of Ce 4+ and Mn 4+ concentration and the formation of the sulfur phase chemicals which blocked the active sites and changed the valence status of the elements.

Description: Surface pre-treatment is one of the key processes in bonded repair of aircraft carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites. This paper investigates the surface modification of physical and chemical properties by laser ablation and conventional polish treatment techniques. Surface morphology analysed by laser scanning confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed that a laser-treated surface displayed higher roughness than that of a polish-treated specimen. The laser-treated laminate exhibited more functional groups in the form of O 1 s/C 1 s atomic ratio of 30.89% for laser-treated and 20.14% for polish-treated as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy observation. Contact angle goniometry demonstrated that laser treatment can provide increased surface free energy and wettability. In the light of mechanical interlocking, molecular bonding and thermodynamics theories on adhesion, laser etching process displayed enhanced bonding performance relative to the polishing surface treatment. These properties resulted in an increased single lap shear strength and a cohesive failure mode for laser etching while an adhesive failure mode occurred in polish-treated specimen.

Description: The present work is focused on the design and development of novel amphotericin B (AmB)-conjugated biocompatible and biodegradable polypeptide hydrogels to improve the antifungal activity. Using three kinds of promoting self-assembly groups (2-naphthalene acetic acid (Nap), naproxen (Npx) and dexamethasone (Dex)) and polypeptide sequence (Phe-Phe-Asp-Lys-Tyr, FFDKY), we successfully synthesized the Nap-FFDK(AmB)Y gels, Npx-FFDK(AmB)Y gels and Dex-FFDK(AmB)Y gels. The AmB-conjugated hydrogelators are highly soluble in different aqueous solutions. The cryo-transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy micrographs of hydrogels afford nanofibres with a width of 20–50 nm. Powder X-ray diffraction analyses demonstrate that the crystalline structures of the AmB and Dex are changed into amorphous structures after the formation of hydrogels. Circular dichroism spectra of the solution of blank carriers and the corresponding drug deliveries further help elucidate the molecular arrangement in gel phase, indicating the existence of turn features. The in vitro drug releases suggest that the AmB-conjugated hydrogels are suitable as drug-controlled release vehicles for hydrophobic drugs. The antifungal effect of AmB-conjugated hydrogels significantly exhibits the antifungal activity against Candida albicans . The results of the present study indicated that the AmB-conjugated hydrogels are suitable carriers for poorly water soluble drugs and for enhancement of therapeutic efficacy of antifungal drugs.
