Description: Aimed at the problem of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) performance evaluation and optimal EGR rate determination of turbocharged diesel engines, an optimized decision-making method, based on grey theory and entropy weight, was proposed. The internal combustion pressure, fuel consumption rate, NO X , CO and smoke were selected as the decision-making targets and the initial decision-making model was established based on the traditional grey decision-making theory. According to the characteristics and optimization requirements of EGR, the optimal compromise between combustion and emission performance is proposed to transform into decision-making target weighting problem, then an optimized subjective weighting method based on expert scoring and grey relational analysis is proposed. Finally, the entropy weight method was used to solve the objective weight and the optimized multi-objective grey decision-making model was established, which can not only weaken the human error of subjective empowerment, but also fully explore the intrinsic relationship of the evaluation indexes. At last, an optimization simulation platform for EGR performance evaluation based on MATLB/GUIDE was designed and established. The results show that the optimization simulation platform can effectively improve the efficiency of simulation calculation, which is more convenient for practical engineering applications. The optimized method can successfully realize EGR performance evaluation and optimal EGR rate determination under different working conditions. The decision-making result was consistent with the present EGR control strategies, which provide a new research idea for EGR performance optimization.

Description: The performance of polymer composites in seawater, under high hydrostatic pressure (typically few tens of MPa), for simulating exposures at great depths in seas and oceans, has been little studied. In this paper, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and its composites reinforced by carbon fibres and glass fibres were prepared. The seawater environment with different seawater hydrostatic pressure ranging from normal pressure to 40 MPa was simulated with special equipment, in which the seawater absorption and wear behaviour of PEEK and PEEK-based composites were examined in situ . The effects of seawater hydrostatic pressure on the mechanical properties, wear resistance and microstructure of PEEK and its composites were focused on. The results showed that seawater absorption of PEEK and its composites were greatly accelerated by increased hydrostatic pressure in the deep sea. Affected by seawater absorption, both for neat PEEK and composites, the degradation on mechanical properties, wear resistance and crystallinity were induced, the degree of which was increasingly serious with the increase of hydrostatic pressure of seawater environment. There existed a good correlation in an identical form of exponential function between the wear rate and the seawater hydrostatic pressure. Moreover, the corresponding mechanisms of the effects of deep-sea hydrostatic pressure were also discussed.

Description: Intercalation and in situ formation of three fluorescent complexes, Al(III)-, Cr(III)- and Cu(II)-10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinolone (M-HBQ, M = Al, Cr and Cu), in the interlayer spaces of magadiite (mag) were studied by solid–solid reactions between metal ions exchanged mags (M-mag, M = Al, Cr and Cu) and HBQ. Results show that the basal spacings of the intercalated composites increase after the intercalation of HBQ into M-mags. The amount of HBQ in the intercalated compounds is different due to the amount of metal ions and the diversification of coordination ability of metal ions, and the order of the coordination ability of these three metal ions is Cu 2+ 〉 Cr 3+ 〉 Al 3+ . The amount of the metal cations in the interlayer of mag is enough for the in situ complex formation of M-HBQ complexes. The slight shift of the absorption and luminescence bands of the complexes suggests the different microstructures, including molecular packing of the complexes in the interlayer spaces of mags, resulting that the host–guest interactions are formed. These findings show that the intercalation and in situ formation of M-HBQ complexes (M = Al, Cr and Cu) in the interlayer space of mag are successfully achieved in the current work.

Description: A low-cost and eco-friendly superabsorbent composite is prepared through the free-radical graft co-polymerization of wheat bran (WB), acrylic acid (AA) and laterite (LA) in an aqueous solution. Elemental map, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectra revealed that the LA evenly distributed in the superabsorbent composite and wheat bran-g-poly(acrylic acid)/laterite (WB-g-PAA/LA) formed successfully. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that the WB-g-PAA/LA had high thermal stability. Furthermore, the properties of the WB-g-PAA/LA, such as swelling in saline solutions and degradation, are also assessed. The final WB-g-PAA/LA (5 wt%) superabsorbent composite attained an optimum water absorbency of 1425 g g –1 in distilled water and 72 g g –1 in 0.9 wt% NaCl solution. The water absorbency of WB-g-PAA/LA (10 wt%) is even greater than that of the WB-g-PAA. Moreover, the water-retention capacity of WB-g-PAA/LA (5 wt%) is high, and the water-retention process followed a zero-order reaction. The reaction rate constant is 8.2428 x 10 5 exp(– E a /RT ) and the apparent activation energy ( E a ) is 35.11 kJ mol –1 . Furthermore, WB-g-PAA/LA (5 wt%) may regulate the release of urea, indicating that the superabsorbent composite could provide a promising application as a urea fertilizer carrier. Additionally, it increased the germination and growth rates of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch, suggesting it could influence the growth of Chinese herbal medicine.

Description: Three-dimensional (3D) graphene composites have drawn increasing attention in energy storage/conversion applications due to their unique structures and properties. Herein, we synthesized 3D honeycomb-like Ni 3 S 2 @graphene oxide composite (3D honeycomb-like Ni 3 S 2 @GO) by a one-pot hydrothermal method. We found that positive charges of Ni 2+ and negative charges of NO 3 – in Ni(NO 3 ) 2 induced a transformation of graphene oxide with smooth surface into graphene oxide with wrinkled surface (w-GO). The w-GO in the mixing solution of Ni(NO 3 ) 2 /thioacetamide/H 2 O evolved into 3D honeycomb-like Ni 3 S 2 @GO in solvothermal process. The GO effectively inhibited the aggregation of Ni 3 S 2 nanoparticles. Photoelectrochemical cells based on 3D Ni 3 S 2 @GO synthesized at 60 mM l –1 Ni(NO 3 ) 2 exhibited the best energy conversion efficiency. 3D Ni 3 S 2 @GO had smaller charge transfer resistance and larger exchange current density than pure Ni 3 S 2 for iodine reduction reaction. The cyclic stability of 3D honeycomb-like Ni 3 S 2 @GO was good in the iodine electrolyte. Results are of great interest for fundamental research and practical applications of 3D GO and its composites in solar water-splitting, artificial photoelectrochemical cells, electrocatalysts and Li-S or Na-S batteries.

Description: Bears produce the most altricial neonates of any placental mammal. We hypothesized that the transition from colostrum to mature milk in bears reflects a temporal and biochemical adaptation for altricial development and immune protection. Comparison of bear milks with milks of other eutherians yielded distinctive protein profiles. Proteomic and metabolomic analysis of serial milk samples collected from six giant pandas showed a prolonged transition from colostrum to main-phase lactation over approximately 30 days. Particularly striking are the persistence or sequential appearance of adaptive and innate immune factors. The endurance of immunoglobulin G suggests an unusual duration of trans-intestinal absorption of maternal antibodies, and is potentially relevant to the underdeveloped lymphoid system of giant panda neonates. Levels of certain milk oligosaccharides known to exert anti-microbial activities and/or that are conducive to the development of neonatal gut microbiomes underwent an almost complete changeover around days 20–30 postpartum, coincident with the maturation of the protein profile. A potential metabolic marker of starvation was detected, the prominence of which may reflect the natural postpartum period of anorexia in giant panda mothers. Early lactation in giant pandas, and possibly in other ursids, appears to be adapted for the unique requirements of unusually altricial eutherian neonates.

Description: Titanium (Ti) is an ideal bone substitute due to its superior bio-compatibility and remarkable corrosion resistance. However, in order to improve the osteoconduction and osteoinduction capacities in clinical applications, different kinds of surface modifications are typically applied to Ti alloys. In this study, we fabricated a tightly attached polydopamine-assisted Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle coating on Ti with magnetic properties, aiming to improve the osteogenesis of the Ti substrates. The PDA-assisted Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and water contact angle measurements. The cell attachment and proliferation rate of the human bone mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) on the Ti surface significantly improved with the Fe 3 O 4 /PDA coating when compared with the pure Ti without a coating. Furthermore, the results of in vitro alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity at 7 and 14 days and alizarin red S staining at 14 days showed that the Fe 3 O 4 /PDA coating on Ti promoted the osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs. Moreover, hBMSCs co-cultured with the Fe 3 O 4 /PDA-coated Ti for approximately 14 days also exhibited a significantly higher mRNA expression level of ALP, osteocalcin and runt-related transcription factor-2 (RUNX2). Our in vitro results revealed that the present PDA-assisted Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticle surface coating is an innovative method for Ti surface modification and shows great potential for clinical applications.

Description: Seven new cucurbitane glucosides, hemslepensides J-P ( 1 – 7 ), and two known compounds, 16,25- O -diacetyl-cucurbitane F ( 8 ) and 25- O -acetyl-23,24-dihydrocucurbitacin F ( 9 ), were isolated from the tubers of Hemsleya pengxianensis var. jinfushanensis . The structures of 1 – 7 were elucidated using infrared absorption spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The treatment of HT29 cells, human colon cancer cells, with compounds 8 and 9 inhibited cell proliferation. Further study demonstrated that compounds 8 and 9 induced F-actin aggregation, G 2 /M phase cell cycle arrest and cell apoptosis in HT29 cells. In summary, the present study enriched the chemical composition research of H. pengxianensis , and suggested that the compounds 8 / 9 treatment may be a potentially useful therapeutic option for colon cancer.

Description: At present, the disadvantage of powder epoxy adhesive is the limited application area. In order to widen the application range of powder epoxy adhesive from heat-resistant substrates (such as metals) to heat-sensitive substrates (such as plastic products, cardboard and wood), it is necessary to decrease the curing temperature. In this article, a series of fast-curing powder epoxy adhesives were prepared by the melt blending method with bisphenol A epoxy resin (E-20), hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) as a curing agent and 2-methylimidazole (2-MI) as an accelerant. The structure and properties of the E-20/HMTA/2-MI systems were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analyser and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). 2-MI added into the E-20/HMTA systems can simultaneously enhance toughness, tensile strength, glass transition temperature ( T g ) and thermal stability in comparison with the E-20/HMTA systems. The best mechanical properties were obtained at 100/8/0.6 weight ratio of the E-20/HMTA/2-MI systems. DSC experiments revealed that the exothermic peak of the E-20/HMTA/2-MI system was about 55°C lower than that of the E-20/HMTA system. The activation energy of the cure reaction was determined by both Kissinger's and Ozawa's methods at any heating rates. The activation energy and pre-exponential factor were about 100.3 kJ mol –1 and 3.57 x 10 11 s –1 , respectively. According to the KAS method, the curing time of the E-20/HMTA/2-MI systems was predicted by evaluating the relationship between temperature and curing time.

Description: A heterojunction catalyst, BiVO 4 /P25, was successfully fabricated using a one-step hydrothermal method. The prepared composite was characterized using XRD, XPS, Raman, FT-IR, UV–vis, SEM, HRTEM and PL. The HRTEM pictures revealed that the heterostructured composite was composed of BiVO 4 and P25, and from the pictures of SEM we could see the P25 nanoparticles assembling on the surface of flower-shaped BiVO 4 nanostructures. The XPS spectra showed that the prepared catalyst consisted of Bi, V, O, Ti and C. The photocatalytic activity of BiVO 4 /P25 was evaluated by degraded methyl blue (MB) and tetracycline under visible light illumination ( 〉 420 nm), and the results showed that BiVO 4 /P25 composite has a better photocatalytic performance compared with pure BiVO 4 and the most active c-BiVO 4 /P25 sample showed enough catalytic stability after three successive reuses for MB photodegradation. The enhanced photocatalytic performance could mainly be attributed to the better optical absorption ability and good absorption ability of organic contaminants.
