    Notes: Jasmonic acid (JA) is known to be involved in the response of plants to environmental stresses such as drought, and betaine (glycinebetaine) is an osmopretectant accumulated in plants under environmental stresses including drought. However, it remains currently unclear whether JA is involved in the water-stress-induced betaine accumulation in plant leaves. The present experiment, performed with the whole pear plant (Pyrus bretschneideri Redh. cv. Suli), revealed that the exogenously applied JA induced a significant increase of the betaine level in the pear leaves when the plants were not yet stressed by drought, and when the plants were subjected to water stress, the ‘JA plus drought’ treatment induced a significant higher betaine level than did the drought treatment alone. Meanwhile, the ‘JA plus drought’ treatment induced higher levels of betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH, E C 1.2.1.8) and activities in the leaves than did the drought treatment alone. These results obtained in the whole plant experiments were supported by the results of detached leaf experiments. In detached leaves JA induced significant increases in betaine levels, BADH activities and BADH protein amounts in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. These data demonstrate that JA is involved in the drought-induced betaine accumulation in pear leaves.

    Notes: This paper examines the effects of loading rate on the Weibull stress model for prediction of cleavage fracture in a low-strength, A515-70 pressure vessel steel. Interest focuses on low-to-moderate loading rates (K˙I 〈 2500 MPa √m s−1 ). Shallow cracked SE(B) specimens were tested at four different loading rates for comparison with previous quasi-static tests on shallow notch SE(B)s and standard C(T)s. To utilize these dynamic experimental data, we assume that the Weibull modulus (m) previously calibrated using quasi-static data remains invariant over the loading rates of interest. The effects of dynamic loading on the Weibull stress model enter through the rate-sensitive material flow properties, the scale parameter (σu ) and the threshold Weibull stress (σw-min ). Rate-sensitive flow properties are modelled using a viscoplastic constitutive model with uniaxial, tension stress–plastic strain curves specified at varying plastic strain rates. The analyses examine dependencies of σw-min and σu on K˙I . Present results indicate that σw-min and σu are weak functions of loading rate K˙I for this pressure vessel steel. However, the predicted cumulative probability for cleavage exhibits a strong sensitivity to σu and, consequently, the dependency of σu on K˙I is sufficient to preclude use of the static σu value for high loading rates.

    Description: Suprathreshold stochastic resonance (SSR) is a distinct form of stochastic resonance, which occurs in multilevel parallel threshold arrays with no requirements on signal strength. In the generic SSR model, an optimal weighted decoding scheme shows its superiority in minimizing the mean square error (MSE). In this study, we extend the proposed optimal weighted decoding scheme to more general input characteristics by combining a Kalman filter and a least mean square (LMS) recursive algorithm, wherein the weighted coefficients can be adaptively adjusted so as to minimize the MSE without complete knowledge of input statistics. We demonstrate that the optimal weighted decoding scheme based on the Kalman–LMS recursive algorithm is able to robustly decode the outputs from the system in which SSR is observed, even for complex situations where the signal and noise vary over time.

    Description: Microscopic factors are the basis of macroscopic phenomena. We proposed a network analysis paradigm to study the macroscopic financial system from a microstructure perspective. We built the cointegration network model and the Granger causality network model based on econometrics and complex network theory and chose stock price time series of the real estate industry and its upstream and downstream industries as empirical sample data. Then, we analysed the cointegration network for understanding the steady long-term equilibrium relationships and analysed the Granger causality network for identifying the diffusion paths of the potential risks in the system. The results showed that the influence from a few key stocks can spread conveniently in the system. The cointegration network and Granger causality network are helpful to detect the diffusion path between the industries. We can also identify and intervene in the transmission medium to curb risk diffusion.

    Description: Repartitioning of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) between particles is an important process to understand the particle growth and shrinkage in the atmosphere environment. Here, by using optical tweezers coupled with cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, we report the repartitioning of glycerol between a levitated glycerol/NaNO 3 /H 2 O droplet and surrounding glycerol/NaNO 3 /H 2 O droplets deposited on the inner wall of a chamber with different organic to inorganic molar ratios (OIRs). For the high OIR with 3 : 1, no NaNO 3 crystallization occurs both for levitated and deposited droplets in the whole relative humidity (RH) range, the radius of the levitated droplet decreases slowly due to the evaporation of glycerol from the levitated droplet at constant RHs. The levitated droplets radii with OIR of 1 : 1 and 1 : 3 increase with constant RHs that are lower than 45.3% and 55.7%, respectively, indicating that the repartitioning of glycerol occurs. The reason is that NaNO 3 in the deposited droplets is crystallized when RH is lower than 45.3% for 1 : 1 or 55.7% for 1 : 3. So the vapour pressure of glycerol at the surface of deposited droplets is higher than that of the levitated droplet which always remains as liquid droplet without NaNO 3 crystallization, resulting in the transfer of glycerol from the deposited ones to the levitated one. The process of the glycerol repartitioning we discussed herein is a useful model to interpret the repartitioning of SVOCs between the externally mixed particles with different phase states.
