    Description: A new species of octopod, Octopus magnificus, is described based on a total of 131 specimens from the southeastern Atlantic. The species has been collected from 26°03′S, 13°43′E to 34°29′S, 25°36′E between 2–560 m of depth, mainly on fine sandy bottom. The species is characterized by its large overall size, long ligula, the anatomy of the male reproductive tract, the shape of the funnel organ, skin loose and elongate folds present in live animals. O. magnificus is compared to three large octopuses, namely O. dofleini, O. maorum and Enteroctopus megalocyathus.

    Description: The systematics of the deep-sea cirrate octopod genus Opisthoteuthis Verrill in the Atlantic Ocean is reviewed. Comparisons, based on examination of all extant type material and new, reported and unreported material collected in recent years from the Atlantic, show the presence of five species: Opisthoteuthis agassizii Verrill 1883, O. grimaldii (Joubin, 1903), O. massyae (Grimpe, 1920) and two new species, O. calypso and O. hardyi, which are described. Opisthoteuthis agassizii, distributed only in the western North Atlantic, is redescribed, and a neotype is designated for the presumed lost holotype. Opisthoteuthis grimaldii, distributed in the East Atlantic and possibly also in the western North Atlantic, and O. massyae, distributed in the East Atlantic are also redescribed and junior synonyms listed. Opisthoteuthis calypso, found in the East Atlantic and O. hardyi, known only from a single specimen from the SW Atlantic are described. New morphometric data for O. agassizii, O. massyae and O. grimaldii are given. Illustrations, geographical distributions and a review of the biological information for all five species are provided.

    Description: Increased pollution in the coastal areas may cause changes in the biodiversity of marine organisms depending upon their physiological capacity and resilience to thrive under stressing environmental conditions. The present research evaluates the heavy metals pollution degree of coastal waters using the macroalgae Ericaria selaginoides as bioindicator along the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Eight stations were chosen: two located near Eljadida city, three nearby Safi city and three around the city of Essaouira. Results showed that the heavy metal content in the thalli of E. selaginoides, in seawater and sediment varied seasonally. At the same time, it was negatively correlated with algal biodiversity onsite. However, the Chemical Oxygen Demand was significantly higher at the polluted station S5 than at other stations, while Dissolved Oxygen and Biological Oxygen Demand were lower. E. selaginoides accumulated metals in the following order Fe 〉 Zn 〉 Mn 〉 Cu 〉 Ni 〉 Pb 〉 Cr 〉 Cd. In conclusion, E. selaginoides is overall more resilient to heavy metal pollution than other marine organisms in the Atlantic coast of Morocco, as indicated by substantially elevated concentrations of heavy metals in some sites. Our results support that E. selaginoides would be a suitable bioindicator for monitoring of heavy metals in polluted coastal areas.
