Description: DSDP Hole 552A, cored with the HPC on Hatton Drift, represents an almost complete and undisturbed sediment section spanning the late Neogene and Quaternary. Lithologic, faunal, isotopic, and paleomagnetic analyses indicate that the section represents the most complete deep sea record of climatic evolution hitherto recovered at high latitudes in the northern hemisphere. A glacial record of remarkable resolution for the late Pliocene and Pleistocene is provided by oxygen and carbon isotope ratios in benthic foraminifers. In the upper part of the section, the whole of the standard oxygen isotope record of the past million years is well preserved. The onset of ice-rafting and glacial-interglacial alternations occurs at about 2.4 m.y. ago.

Description: Unlike most previous Deep Sea Drilling Project cruises, Leg 39 was not scientifically planned as a "theme" cruise, on which a number of sites are drilled to address a single scientific problem area, namely, to improve our knowledge of paleocirculation changes and the overall geologic history of the South Atlantic Ocean. This would be done along more specific objectives: 1) collect a biostratigraphic section on the Ceará Rise (Site 354), determine the nature and age of a prominent reflector there, and determine the nature and age of basement; 2) date basement between magnetic anomalies 32 and 33 in the Argentine Basin (Site 358), and 33 and 34 in the Brazil Basin (Site 355); obtain as complete sedimentary sections as time would permit at the Ceará Rise, Brazil Basin, the Argentine Basin and Sào Paulo Plateau (Site 356).

    Publication Date: 2024-01-09
Description: Subcontinuously cored early(?)-middle Miocene to recently deposited sediments from ODP Site 645 were studied texturally, mineralogically, and geochemically. The entire sequence contains minerals and associated chemical elements that are chiefly of detrital origin. In particular, the clay minerals, which include smectite, kaolinite, chlorite, and illite, are detrital. No obvious evidence of diagenesis with depth, of burial, of volcanism, or of hydrothermal alteration was observed. The sedimentary textures, clay mineralogy, and 〈2-µm fraction geochemistry of the early middle Miocene sediments (630 to 1147 mbsf) suggest the pronounced but variable influence of a southward bottom current. Two clay facies are defined. The lower one, Cj (780 to 1147 mbsf), is characterized by the great abundance of discrete smectite (with less than 15% illite interlayers), probably detrital in origin, and reworked older, discrete, smectite-rich sediments. The upper clay facies, C2 (630 to 780 mbsf), shows a net decrease of the fully expandable clay abundances, with a great abundance of mixed-layer, illite-smectite clays (60 to 80% of illite interlayers). Such clay assemblages can be inherited from paleosoils or older sedimentary rocks. An important change occurs at 630 mbsf (clay fraction) or 600 mbsf (sedimentary texture), which may be explained by the beginning of continental glaciation (630 mbsf, ~9 Ma) and the onset of ice rafting in Baffin Bay (600 mbsf, ~8 Ma). Above this level, the characteristics and modifications of the clay assemblages are controlled climatically and can be explained by the fluctuations of (1) ice-rafting, (2) speed of weak bottom currents, and (3) some supply by mud turbiditic currents. Three clay facies (C3, C4, and C5) can be defined by the abrupt increases of the inherited chlorite and illite clays.

In:  Supplement to: Owen, Robert M; Zimmerman, Andrew R (1991): Geochemistry of the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary at Hole 752B, Broken Ridge. In: Weissel, J; Peirce, J; Taylor, E; et al. (eds.), Proceedings of the Ocean Drilling Program, Scientific Results, College Station, TX (Ocean Drilling Program), 121, 423-433, https://doi.org/10.2973/odp.proc.sr.121.147.1991
    Publication Date: 2024-01-09
Description: Statistical analyses of sediment geochemical data from a Cretaceous/Tertiary (KT) boundary section at Broken Ridge indicate that the sediments here are composed of three major geochemical end-members: (1) a biogenic/dissolution residue component; (2) a volcanogenic component; and (3) a diagenetic/alteration product component. The KT boundary at Broken Ridge is overlain by a 6-m-thick ash-rich layer. Relative flux comparisons of the three geochemical end-members suggest, however, this layer is the result of a dramatic (11-fold) decrease in biological productivity immediately following the KT boundary event, while both the flux and composition of the volcanogenic component remain constant across the KT boundary. The volcanogenic component apparently is derived from a local source, and we find no evidence of a causal link between volcanic activity and the KT boundary event. The flux of the diagenetic component, which is enriched in Au, increases sharply at the KT boundary. All other elements associated with this component are present in significant amounts in the other two geochemical end-members. With the possible exception of Au, then, geochemical anomalies in the sediments just below the KT boundary appear to result from diagenetic alteration of biogenic and volcanogenic sediment precursors.
