    Description: Only a few studies have examined the variation of oxygen and hydrogen isotopes of seawater in NE Atlantic water masses, and data are especially sparse for intermediate and deep-water masses. The current study greatly expands this record with 527 d18O values from 47 stations located throughout the mid- to low-latitude NE Atlantic. In addition, dD was analyzed in the 192 samples collected along the GEOTRACES North Atlantic Transect GA03 (GA03_e=KN199-4) and the 115 Iberia-Forams cruise samples from the western and southern Iberian margin. An intercomparison study between the two stable isotope measurement techniques (cavity ring-down laser spectroscopy and magnetic-sector isotope ratio mass spectrometry) used to analyze GA03_e samples reveals relatively good agreement for both hydrogen and oxygen isotope ratios. The surface (0-100 m) and central (100-500 m) water isotope data show the typical, evaporation related trend of increasing values equatorward with the exception for the zonal transect off Cape Blanc, NW Africa. Off Cape Blanc, surface water isotope signatures are modified by the upwelling of fresher Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) that generally has isotopic values of 0.0 to 0.5 per mil for d18O and 0 to 2 per mil for dD. Along the Iberian margin the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) is clearly distinguished by its high d18O (0.5-1.1 per mil) and dD (3-6 per mil) values that can be traced into the open Atlantic. Isotopic values in the NE Atlantic Deep Water (NEADW) are relatively low (d18O: -0.1 to 0.5 per mil; dD: -1 to 4 per mil) and show a broader range than observed previously in the northern and southern convection areas. The NEADW is best observed at GA03_e Stations 5 and 7 in the central NE Atlantic basin. Antarctic Bottom Water isotope values are relatively high indicating modification of the original Antarctic source water along the flow path. The reconstructed d18O-salinity relationship for the complete data set has a slope of 0.51, i.e., slightly steeper than the 0.46 described previously by Pierre et al. (1994, J. Mar. Syst. 5 (2), 159-170.) for the tropical to subtropical Northeast Atlantic. This slope decreases to 0.46 for the subtropical North Atlantic Central Water (NACW) and the MOW and to 0.32 for the surface waters of the upper 50 m. The dD-salinity mixing lines have estimated slopes of 3.01 for the complete data, 1.26 for the MOW, 3.47 for the NACW, and 2.63 for the surface waters. The slopes of the d18O-dD relationship are significantly lower than the one for the Global Meteoric Water Line with 5.6 for the complete data set, 2.30 for the MOW, 4.79 for the NACW, and 3.99 for the surface waters. The lower slopes in all the relationships clearly reflect the impact of the evaporation surplus in the subtropics.

    Description: Pluri-annual proxy records of marine sediment cores from the Tagus Prodelta off Lisbon, Portugal, have been generated to gain insight into the climatic and hydrographic changes in the area during the twentieth century. The study includes benthic and planktonic foraminiferal faunas and the stable isotopic composition of one benthic (Uvigerina celtica) and two planktonic (Globigerina bulloides and Globorotalia inflata) foraminiferal species. Sea bottom and surface water temperatures were estimated based on the d18O values of these species and compared with instrumental data. The foraminiferal fauna and the isotope-based temperature record indicate increasing temperatures throughout the last century. The immigration of a new species, Saidovina karreriana, to the area around 100 years ago indicates changes in the trophic conditions and water mass properties, which are probably at least partly due to anthropogenic pollution.

    Description: Greenland stadial/interstadial cycles are known to affect the North Atlantic's hydrography and overturning circulation and to cause ecological changes on land (e.g., vegetation). Hardly any information, directly expressed as diversity indices, however, exists on the impacts of these millennial-scale variations on the marine flora and fauna. We calculated three diversity indices (species richness, Shannon diversity index, Hurlbert's probability of interspecific encounter) for the planktonic foraminifer fauna found in 18 deep-sea cores covering a time span back to 60 ka. Clear differences in diversity response to the abrupt climate change can be observed and some records can be grouped accordingly. Core SO82-05 from the southern section of the subpolar gyre, the cores along the British margin and core MD04-2845 in the Bay of Biscay show two modes of diversity distribution, with reduced diversity (uneven fauna) during cold phases and the reverse (even fauna) during warm phases. Along the Iberian margin high species diversity prevailed throughout most of the glacial period. The exceptions were the Heinrich stadials when the fauna abruptly shifted from an even to an uneven or less even fauna. Diversity changes were often abrupt, but revealed a high resilience of the planktonic foraminifer faunas. The subtropical gyre waters seem to buffer the climatic effects of the Heinrich events and Greenland Stadials allowing for a quick recovery of the fauna after such an event. The current work clearly shows that planktonic foraminifer faunas quickly adapt to climate change, albeit with a reduced diversity.

    Description: Quantitative coccolithophore analyses were performed in core MD01-2446, located in the mid-latitude North Atlantic, to reconstruct climatically induced sea-surface water conditions throughout Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 14-9. The data are compared to new and available paleoenvironmental proxies from the same site as well as other nearby North Atlantic records that support the coccolithophore signature at glacial-interglacial to millennial climate scale. Total coccolithophore absolute abundance increases during interglacials but abruptly drops during the colder glacial phases and deglaciations. Coccolithophore warm-water taxa (wwt) indicate that MIS11c and MIS9e experienced warmer and more stable conditions throughout the whole photic zone compared to MIS13. MIS11 was a long-lasting warmer and stable interglacial characterized by a climate optimum during MIS11c when a more prominent influence of the subtropical front at the site is inferred. The wwt pattern also suggests distinct interstadial and stadial events lasting about 4-10 kyr. The glacial increases of Gephyrocapsa margereli-G. muellerae 3-4 µm along with higher values of Corg, additionally supported by the total alkenone abundance at Site U1313, indicate more productive surface waters, likely reflecting the migration of the polar front into the mid-latitude North Atlantic. Distinctive peaks of G. margereli-muellerae (〉 4 µm), C. pelagicus pelagicus, Neogloboquadrina pachyderma left coiling, and reworked nannofossils, combined with minima in total nannofossil accumulation rate, are tracers of Heinrich-type events during MIS12 and MIS10. Additional Heinrich-type events are suggested during MIS12 and MIS14 based on biotic proxies, and we discuss possible iceberg sources at these times. Our results improve the understanding of mid-Brunhes paleoclimate and the impact on phytoplankton diversity in the mid-latitude North Atlantic region.

    Description: The sediment records from north and south of Denmark Strait (cores PS2644 and MD99-2323) and on the Kangerlussuaq Trough Mouth Fan (KTMF) (MD99-2260) are evaluated for the period 12 to 60 cal ka BP with the goal of evaluating: 1) the relative roles of the Greenland and Iceland Ice Sheets in sediment composition, 2) the processes of sediment supply, and 3) the relationship, if any, between the atmospheric derived ice core records and glacial marine sediment history. These questions were addressed using counts of coarse (〉 2 mm) ice rafted debris (IRD), magnetic susceptibility, grain-size spectra, and sediment mineral composition. A significant difference in these variables occurred between MS3 and MIS2, with the latter showing small to modest abrupt changes in felsic and mafic minerals and in IRD, compared to larger and less variable changes during MIS2. The dominant bedrock source archived in the cores is the Cenozoic basaltic outcrops from East Greenland and Iceland (~60%) but there are frequent pulses of felsic-rich sediments (~17-36%), which coincided with Greenland stadials. There is also a persistent detrital carbonate input. The largest shift in most sediment proxies occurred ~28-30 cal ka BP reflecting the sustained expansion of the ice sheets. The grain-size spectra on the Snorri Drift (MD99-2323) reflected complex depositional histories involving the supply of poorly sorted glacially derived sediment (sand, silt, and clay) and reworking by bottom currents.

    Description: The Sines Contourite Drift (SCD), located in the Alentejo margin, southwest Iberian continental margin, has been through many depositional phases in result of climatic variations and bottom current oscillations, which determined a variable depositional pattern and an irregular sedimentary evolution since the Late Pleistocene. The SCD, being in the main path of the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW), which greatly constrains the sedimentary building of this drift, constitutes the distal part of the Gulf of Cadiz Contourite Depositional System and its sedimentary evolution therefore reflects the history of MOW variations. In order to investigate this, we report on a multiproxy analysis of grain-size, carbon content and physical, geochemical, and environmental-magnetic properties on the AMS 14C dated 350-cm long gravity core CO14-GC-07, retrieved in the SCD, at 1425 meters water depth (mwd). The main objective is to reconstruct the evolution of the sedimentary package of the SCD from 〉 43 cal kyr BP to Present and bring new insights about the impact of bottom currents' activity on the morphosedimentary evolution of the margin. Results show the existence of four distinct depositional phases in response to climate variations and bottom current oscillations during the Late Pleistocene-Holocene. Phase 1 (350-322 cm: 〉42.9 cal kyr BP) occurred in Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 and presents silty-muddy sediments with presence of shell fragments and moderate bioturbation. Phase 2 (322-176 cm: 〉42.9 - ~30.5 cal kyr BP), which lasted from middle MIS 3 to the onset of MIS 2, reveals sediment coarsening towards the top limit, suggesting climate cooling and strong bottom current winnowing. Phase 3 (176-144 cm: ~30.5 - 17.1 cal kyr BP) covers most of MIS 2 prior to the last deglaciation and shows the sharpest variations on all sediment properties and the coarsest sediment facies, with Fe-rich layers associated with the increase of terrigenous input and sea-level regression that coincide with the enhancement of MOW. Phase 4 (144-0 cm: 〈17.1 cal kyr BP) is associated with the deglacial sea-level rise and represents a calmer depositional environment with finer sediments and increasing contributions of biogenic material. The MOW is the most prominent bottom current and the most active seabed shaping agent in the study area, whose vertical shifting during glacial (~800-2200 mwd) and interglacial (600-1500 mwd) periods is coincident with the most active morphosedimentary sector of the area, contributing to the development of landslide scars and sediment waves.

    Description: To reconstruct Export Productivity (Pexp), 27 taxonomic categories of the planktonic foraminifera census data were used with the modern analog technique SIMMAX 28 (Pflaumann et al., 1996, doi:10.1029/95PA01743; 2003, doi:10.1029/2002PA000774). To the 26 taxonomic groups widely used and listed in Kucera et al. (2005, doi:10.1016/j.quascirev.2004.07.014), Turborotalita humilis was added in our calibration as it is associated with the PCC source region (Meggers et al., 2002, doi:10.1016/S0967-0645(02)00103-0). The modern analog file is based on the Iberian margin database (Salgueiro et al., 2008, doi:10.1016/j.marmicro.2007.09.003) combined with the North Atlantic surface samples used by the MARGO project (Kucera et al., 2005). This results in a total of 999 analogs for Pexp. Modern oceanic primary productivity (PP) is obtained for each site by averaging 12 monthly primary productivity values for a 8-year period (1978-1986) that were estimated from satellite color data (CZCS) and gridded at 0.5° latitude - longitude fields (Antoine et al., 1996, doi:10.1029/95GB02832). Export Productivity (Pexp) was calculated from the PP values following the empirical relationship Pexp = PP**2/400 for primary production below 200 gC/m**2/yr, and Pexp = PP/2 for primary production above 200 gC/m2/yr (Eppley and Peterson, 1979, doi:10.1038/282677a0; Sarnthein et al., 1988, doi:10.1029/PA003i003p00361). The residuals gives the differences between satellite based Pexp and foraminiferal Pexp.
