Description: During Polarstern cruise ANT-XXV/5 in April/May 2009, the marine atmosphere was sampled via PTFE (Polytetrafluorethylen) tubing extending from the front of the upper deck to labs on the main deck of r/v Polarstern and then analyzed for elemental mercury in air (Hg0-air) using the same Tekran 2537A as for Hg0-water measurements. The time interval of Hg0-air measurements was 5-min with gaps of about 20 min each hour because of intermittent Hg0-water measurements. The data were checked for potential contamination during tailwind situations (relative wind speed and direction) and doubtful values were removed. The detection limit was 0.1 ng L-1 (on ANT-XXV/5: 5 times the Hg0-air values were below the detection limit).

Description: During the Polarstern cruise ANT-XXV/1 in November 2008, surface seawater from below the ship's hull was continuously pumped through a shower head into a 20 L equilibrator bottle and drained at the bottom. Equilibrium between the supplied water and the headspace air (Hg0 equ) was achieved in about 1 h. The equilibrated air was transferred to the TEKRAN 2537A after closing the drain and elemental mercury (Hg0) was preconcentrated by amalgamation on gold traps and finally analyzed by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The detection limit was 0.1 ng L-1. Wind speed was taken from the Polarstern Meteorological station and surface water salinity and temperature from the thermosalinograph. Hg0 equil. was a duplicate measurement of the headspace and provided at standard reference condition of 0°C by the Tekran instrument. The value was corrected to the in situ temperature and divided by Henry's Law constant at respective sea surface water temperature.
Keywords: Anemometer; ANT-XXV/1; Atlantic Ocean; Calculated; Calculated according to Sanemasa (1975); DATE/TIME; DEPTH, water; Elemental mercury; Henry's law constant; LATITUDE; LONGITUDE; Mercury; Mercury sea-air gas exchange; Mercury vapour analyzer, Tekran, 2537A; Polarstern; PS73; PS73/1_0_Underway-1; PS73/1_0_Underway-2; PS73/1_0_Underway-3; Salinity; Sea water pump, trace metals; Ship Weather Station; surface water; SWEAS; Temperature, technical; Temperature, water; Thermosalinograph; TMPUMP; TSG; Wind speed

Description: During the cruise H10-2018 on board the Chinese R/V Hai Yang Di Zhi Shi Hao, we collected water with a CTD SBE911 rosette system in 64 stations distributed along the shelf, shelf edge and deep-sea of the northern South China Sea. We aimed to study the nutrients availability and primary production distribution under the influence of the strong typhoon Mangkhut, in September 2018. The influence of the Mangkhut typhoon over the upper 100 m of the water column was accessed before and after its passage. The physical oceanography during the survey is available at PANGAEA (Waniek et al., 2021). Brief description of the methodology used: - Nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate were measured by continuous flow analysis. - Oxygen was measured on one sample at each station by potentiometric Winkler titration. - DOC and DN were measured by catalytic oxidation after filtered with GF/F-filters. - POC and PON were measured by means of an elemental analyser after filtered with pre-combusted GF/F-filters. - Suspended particulate material (SPM) was determined gravimetrically after pre-combusted and weighted GF/F-filters filtration. - Chlorophyll a and phaeopigments were measured using a fluorometer after ethanol extraction of the GF/F-filters. More information regarding the methodology used can be seen in Kuss et al. (in review).
