Description: Tristan da Cunha is assumed to be the youngest subaerial expression of the Walvis Ridge hot spot. Based on new hydroacoustic data, we propose that the most recent hot spot volcanic activity occurs west of the island. We surveyed relatively young intraplate volcanic fields and scattered, probably monogenetic, submarine volcanoes with multibeam echosounders and sub-bottom profilers. Structural and zonal GIS analysis of bathymetric and backscatter results, based on habitat mapping algorithms to discriminate seafloor features, revealed numerous previously-unknown volcanic structures. South of Tristan da Cunha, we discovered two large seamounts. One of them, Isolde Seamount, is most likely the source of a 2004 submarine eruption known from a pumice stranding event and seismological analysis. An oceanic core complex, identified at the intersection of the Tristan da Cunha Transform and Fracture Zone System with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, might indicate reduced magma supply and, therefore, weak plume-ridge interaction at present times.

Description: The main objective of cruise POS524 to the Grimsey Vent Field (GVF), to the North of Iceland, was to study the suitability of electromagnetic (EM) systems for the characterization of an active hydrothermal system. As part of the EM measurements, a Microcat CTD sensor (Seabird) was attached to the mobile EM transmitter (MARTEMIS system), which was operated at an altitude of 5 - 10m above the seafloor. CTD measurements were collected alongside the EM measurements to serve as indicators for hydrothermal activity. CTD measurements with the Microcat CTD Sensor recorded conductivity [mS/cm], temperature [°C] and pressure [dbar] at a sampling rate of 4s, from which sound velocity [m/s] and salinity [psu] were derived using standard formulas (Chen and Millero formula; UNESCO Technical papers in Marine Science #44). Measurements were taken along profiles with a total length of about 18.5km crossing the GVF and surrounding areas during 24h of the 2nd deployment of the MARTEMIS system (station POS524_22-1) between 13.6.2018 6:00h - 14.6.2018 6:00h (UTC). The data are stored in an xls-file. Please note that on-deck measurements were cut from file. Details of the measurements and the cruise can be found in the cruise report (DOI 10.3289/CR_POS524)

Description: The magnetotelluric impedance tensor elements and errors were calculated with the software BIRRP (Chave &Thomson, 2004; doi:10.1111/j.1365-246X.2004.02203.x). Magnetotelluric measurements were conducted from December 2010 to January 2011 at the Walvis Ridge, offshore Namibia. Coordinates of the MT stations are included in the EDI files and cover an area at ~8°E - 12°E, ~18°S-22°S. Station deployment and recovery was conducted on the two cruises MSM17/1 and MSM17/2 on German research vessel Maria S. Merian as part of the SPP1375 priority program SAMPLE. The SAMPLE project focused on the processes linked to continental margin formation.
