Description: The core descriptions (chapter 7) summarize the most important results of the analysis of each sediment core following procedures applied during ODP/IODP expeditions. All cores were opened, described, and color-scanned. In the core descriptions the first column displays the lithological data that are based on visual analysis of the core and are supplemented by information from binocular and smear slide analyses. The sediment classification largely follows ODP/IODP convention. Lithological names consist of a principal name based on composition, degree of lithification, and/or texture as determined from visual description and microscopic observations. In the structure column the intensity of bioturbation together with individual or special features (turbidites, volcanic ash layers, plant debris, shell fragments, etc.) is shown. The hue and chroma attributes of color were determined by comparison with the Munsell soil color charts and are given in the color column in the Munsell notation. A GretagMacbethTM Spectrolino spectrophotometer was used to measure percent reflectance values of sediment color at 36 wavelength channels over the visible light range (380-730 nm) on all of the cores. The digital reflectance data of the spectrophotometer readings were routinely obtained from the surface (measured in 1 cm steps) of the split cores (archive half). The Spectrolino is equipped with a measuring aperture with folding mechanism allowing an exact positioning on the split core and is connected to a portable computer. The data are directly displayed within the software package Excel and can be controlled simultaneously. From all the color measurements, for each core the red/blue ratio (700 nm/450 nm) and the lightness are shown together with the visual core description. The reflectance of individual wavelengths is often significantly affected by the presence of minor amounts of oxyhydroxides or sulphides. To eliminate these effects, we used the red/blue ratio and lightness.

In:  Supplement to: Rippert, Nadine; Nürnberg, Dirk; Raddatz, Jacek; Maier, Edith; Hathorne, Ed C; Bijma, Jelle; Tiedemann, Ralf (2016): Constraining foraminiferal calcification depths in the western Pacific warm pool. Marine Micropaleontology, 128, 14-27, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.marmicro.2016.08.004

Description: Insight into past changes of upper ocean stratification, circulation, and nutrient signatures rely on our knowledge of the apparent calcification depth (ACD) and ecology of planktonic foraminifera, which serve as archives for paleoceanographic relevant geochemical signals. The ACD of different species varies strongly between ocean basins, but also regionally. We constrained foraminiferal ACDs in the western Pacific warm pool (Manihiki Plateau) by comparing stable oxygen and carbon isotopes (d18Ocalcite, d13Ccalcite) as well as Mg/Ca ratios from living planktonic foraminifera to in-situ physical and chemical water mass properties (temperature, salinity, d18Oseawater, d13CDIC). Our analyses point to Globigerinoides ruber as the shallowest dweller, followed by Globigerinoides sacculifer, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata and Globotaloides hexagonus inhabiting increasingly greater depths. These findings are consistent with other ocean basins; however, absolute ACDs differ from other studies. The uppermost mixed-layer species G. ruber and G. sacculifer denote mean calcification depths of ~95 m and ~120 m, respectively. These Western Pacific ACDs are much deeper than in most other studies and most likely relate to the thick surface mixed layer and the deep chlorophyll maximum in this region. Our results indicate that N. dutertrei appears to be influenced by mixing waters from the Pacific equatorial divergence, while P. obliquiloculata with an ACD of ~160 m is more suitable for thermocline reconstructions. ACDs of G. hexagonus reveal a deep calcification depth of ~450 m in oxygen-depleted, but nutrient-rich water masses, consistent to other studies. As the d13C of G. hexagonus is in near-equilibrium with ambient seawater, we suggest this species is suitable for tracing nutrient conditions in equatorial water masses originating in extra-topical regions.

Description: We used X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning on Site U1338 sediments from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 321 to measure sediment geochemical compositions at 2.5 cm resolution for the 450 m of the Site U1338 spliced sediment column. This spatial resolution is equivalent to ~2 k.y. age sampling in the 0-5 Ma section and ~1 k.y. resolution from 5 to 17 Ma. Here we report the data and describe data acquisition conditions to measure Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, Fe, Mn, and Ba in the solid phase. We also describe a method to convert the data from volume-based raw XRF scan data to a normalized mass measurement ready for calibration by other geochemical methods. Both the raw and normalized data are reported along the Site U1338 splice.
