    Description: Russia is posing a series of challenges to gas consumers and gas producers alike. But the effectiveness of these challenges remains a matter of considerable debate. Overall, prospective Russian actions and policies have profound implications for the development of the European gas market in general, and thus for potential US LNG exports to Europe. Moreover, underlying all this is the most worrisome question of all: do Russia’s policies and actions enable gas consumers—and indeed, some Central Asian gas producers—to regard Russia as a reliable energy partner? This article therefore addresses: Prospects for the full implementation of the Russia–China gas accords; Prospects for Turkmen gas supply to both Russia and China; Prospects for the development of both Gazprom’s Turkish Stream project and the EU-backed Southern Gas Corridor; Prospects for US LNG in Europe; The potential challenge that a change in Russian gas export policies could pose to European gas prices. The article also seeks to answer the question as to whether Russia can be considered a reliable partner, particularly in connection with long-term deliveries to Europe.

    Description: The Escherichia coli 70 initiation factor is required for a post-initiation, promoter-proximal pause essential for regulation of lambdoid phage late gene expression; potentially, 70 acts at other sites during transcription elongation as well. The pause is induced by 70 binding to a repeat of the promoter –10 sequence. After 70 binding, further RNA synthesis occurs as DNA is drawn (or ‘scrunched’) into the enzyme complex, presumably exactly as occurs during initial synthesis from the promoter; this synthesis then pauses at a defined site several nucleotides downstream from the active center position when 70 first engages the –10 sequence repeat. We show that the actual pause site in the stabilized, scrunched complex is the ‘elemental pause sequence’ recognized from its frequent occurrence in the E. coli genome. 70 binding and the elemental pause sequence together, but neither alone, produce a substantial transcription pause.

How do cephalopods become available to seabirds: can fish gut contents from tuna fishing vessels be a major food source of deep-dwelling cephalopods? – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70:46–49. Cephalopods are important prey for numerous seabird species. However, the physical mechanisms by which cephalopods (particularly species considered as deep-dwelling) become available to seabirds are poorly understood, and it has recently been suggested that the discarded stomachs of gutted fish captured by tuna longliners can be a major source of deep-dwelling species. Here, we identify some deep-dwelling cephalopods that appear in the diet of seabirds, review the current knowledge of their vertical distribution, and compare the stomach contents of commercially captured tuna with those of seabirds foraging in the same area. The limited available information leads us to conclude that tuna longliners are unlikely to be a major source of deep-dwelling cephalopods for seabirds. However, much more information is required on the ecology of seabird prey, particularly commercially unexploited cephalopod species, which may be obtained from scientific cruises devoted to cephalopod biological research. In addition multispecies/foodweb modelling studies may be required to explore potential interactions between seabirds, their predators and prey, and commercial fishing operations.

    Description: In times of highly volatile commodity markets, governments often try to protect their populations from rapidly rising food prices, which can be particularly harmful for the poor. A potential solution for food-deficit countries is to hold strategic reserves that can be called on when international prices spike. But how large should strategic stockpiles be, and what rules should govern their release? In this paper, we develop a dynamic competitive storage model for wheat in the Middle East and North Africa region, where imported wheat is the most significant component of the average diet. We analyze a strategy that sets aside wheat stockpiles, which can be used to keep domestic prices below a targeted price. Our analysis shows that if the target price is set high and reserves are adequate, the strategy can be effective and robust. Contrary to most interventions, strategic storage policies are counter-cyclical, and when the importing region is sufficiently large, a regional policy can smooth global prices. Simulations indicate that this is the case for the Middle East and North Africa region. Nevertheless, the policy is more costly than a procyclical policy similar to food stamps that uses targeted transfers to directly offset high prices with a subsidy.

    Description: During initial transcription, RNA polymerase remains bound at the promoter and synthesizes RNA without movement along the DNA template, drawing downstream DNA into itself in a process called scrunching and thereby storing energy to sever the bonds that hold the enzyme at the promoter. We show that DNA scrunching also is the driving force behind the escape of RNA polymerase from a regulatory pause of the late gene operon of bacteriophage , and that this process is enhanced by the activity of the Q antiterminator. Furthermore, we show that failure of transcription complexes to escape the pause results in backtracking and arrest in a process analogous to abortive initiation. We identify a sequence element that modulates both abortive synthesis and the formation of arrested elongation complexes.

    Description: We assert that the reef framework-forming coral, Solenosmilia variabilis Duncan, 1873, is sometimes incorrectly recorded as another coral, Lophelia pertusa (Linnaeus, 1758) in surveys of deep-sea habitat (e.g. Bullimore, R., Foster, N., and Howell, K. 2013. Coral-characterized benthic assemblages of the deep Northeast Atlantic: defining "Coral Gardens" to support future habitat mapping efforts. ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70: 511–522). Accurate species lists are critical for developing robust deep-sea habitat classification schemes that allow us to map the distribution of different vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) and predict their occurrences under future climate change scenarios, both of which help prioritize areas for marine protected areas. We recommend that the survey reported by Bullimore et al. (2013) , as well as analogous surveys, consider the likelihood of Solenosmilia having been misidentified, and revise their data if necessary. We also make two further recommendations for best practice in deep-sea habitat classification using Bullimore et al. (2013) as a case study. Preferably, physical specimens should be obtained during deep-sea surveys. However, in the absence of identifications confirmed with specimens, image-based analyses of deep-sea communities can be achieved with high confidence when (i) independent validation is provided by senior taxonomic specialists in taxa that are indicators of VMEs, such as cold-water coral reefs, coral gardens, sponge grounds, cold seeps and xenophyophore fields; and (ii) stronger consideration is given to methods in classical taxonomy, the chemical oceanographic setting and community ecology.

    Description: L20B cells are a cell line commonly used for the isolation of poliovirus. The current study indicates that L20B cells are chronically infected with a retrovirus-like particle that replicates in the cytoplasm and buds through the plasma membrane. The findings indicate that care is needed in the use of L20B cells for certain virus isolation studies and emphasize the importance of electron microscope studies as an adjunct to the development of diagnostic virology protocols.

    Description: Studies in model organisms have yielded considerable insights into the etiology of disease and our understanding of evolutionary processes. Caenorhabditis elegans is among the most powerful model organisms used to understand biology. However, C. elegans is not used as extensively as other model organisms to investigate how natural variation shapes traits, especially through the use of genome-wide association (GWA) analyses. Here, we introduce a new platform, the C. elegans Natural Diversity Resource (CeNDR) to enable statistical genetics and genomics studies of C. elegans and to connect the results to human disease. CeNDR provides the research community with wild strains, genome-wide sequence and variant data for every strain, and a GWA mapping portal for studying natural variation in C. elegans . Additionally, researchers outside of the C. elegans community can benefit from public mappings and integrated tools for comparative analyses. CeNDR uses several databases that are continually updated through the addition of new strains, sequencing data, and association mapping results. The CeNDR data are accessible through a freely available web portal located at http://www.elegansvariation.org or through an application programming interface.
