Notes: Arrowroot starch was acid-treated using 2.2 M HCl at 29 to 30° C for durations of 0 to 72 h, and properties of the control and modified samples were compared. Increasing length of acid treatment produced a progressive decline in amylose blue value, intrinsic viscosity, and swelling power, as well as an increase in free sugars and solubility. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies highlighted changes effected by acid-treatment in the gelatinization behavior of the starch samples. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) studies on 32- and 72-h acid-treated samples indicated a greater proportion of dextrins with a higher percentage of reducing sugars, compared to the control. While X-ray diffraction data suggested minor changes in the crystal phase impacted by acid-treatment, in vitro digestibility of both control and acid-treated samples did not show any appreciable change in overall patterns.

Notes: A mycosis in larval tiger prawn, Penaeus monodon Fabricius, is described for the first time from India. The hyphae of Lagenidium callinectes are contorted, irregularly branched, sparingly septate, and contain a cell wall and membrane, vacuoles, mito chondria, ribosomes, small and large vesicles, and Woronin bodies. The spores occur singly or in pairs. The fungal mycelium may either invade and embed itself in the tissues, or alternatively, replace all the muscle tissues of the infected larval P. monodon. Fungus infected, untreated populations of nauplii, zoea and myksis exhibited mortalities of 5.33 ± 0.55%, 24.68 ± 4.58% and 47.89 ± 0.27%, respectively. A 0.5 ppm treatment with trifluralin significantly reduced the mortality of infected larval populations (i.e. 1.1% nauplii, 3.28% zoea and 5.21% myksis mortality). Lagenidium sp. exhibited growth in potato dextrose agar medium and in Sabouraud's agar at 28 °C.

Notes: Abstract The current work describes the development of a non-intrusive optical method for the quantitative determination of water heights along a hydraulic jump in shooting water flows on a water table. The technique involves optically superimposing a series of alternating dark and clear fringes on the water flow. It is proposed that the fringe deviations seen under a hydraulic jump can be simulated using a series of optical prisms oriented along the direction of the hydraulic jump. The height of each prism gives the local maximum water height at the fringe location. Three types of theoretical prism configurations (isosceles flat-topped prism, scalene flat-topped prism and rounded-topped prism models) have been studied for two flow systems: shooting flow around a wedge and around a cylinder. Equations relating the physical characteristics of the deviated fringes to the height of the theoretical prism and hence the local water height are presented. The variation in water height along a hydraulic jump for flow around a wedge obtained using the optical technique has been compared with heights obtained using a depth gauge. The results were in good agreement for the range of Froude numbers studied (Fr=1.9−3.6). The rounded-topped prism model led to the best agreement with the physical measurements, within 11% throughout the range of conditions studied. The uncertainty associated with the water height determination using the optical technique is ±10%.

Notes: Abstract Several sulfoxides with high enantiomeric purity have been synthesised using heterogeneous catalytic systems. A variety of titanium catalysts supported on Al2O3, SiO2, ZrO2 and montmorillonite, pillared clay catalysts using montmorillonite obtained from different sources and various chiral auxiliaries in presence of stoichiometric amounts of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) have been evaluated in asymmetric oxidation of prochiral sulfides to sulfoxides. It was found that Ti-PILC using montmorillonite K10 afforded optimum results. A probable active species responsible for high enantioselectivity is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Effect of various doses of gamma radiation on the ion-exchange capacity, distribution coefficient values, elution behaviour, pH titration and infrared spectra of some thermally stable inorganic ion exchangers has been studied systematically. No change has been observed in the ion-exchange capacity, elution behaviour and the infrared spectra of the materials irradiated up to a total dose of 3·108 rad, while, a change has been observed in their pH-titration and distribution behaviour.

Description: Chaperones are a diverse class of ubiquitous proteins that assist other cellular proteins in folding correctly and maintaining their native structure. Many different chaperones cooperate to constitute the ‘proteostasis’ machinery in the cells. It has been proposed earlier that archaeal organisms could be ideal model systems for deciphering the basic functioning of the ‘protein folding machinery’ in higher eukaryotes. Several chaperone families have been characterized in archaea over the years but mostly one protein at a time, making it difficult to decipher the composition and mechanistics of the protein folding system as a whole. In order to deal with these lacunae, we have developed a database of all archaeal chaperone proteins, CrAgDb ( C haperone r epertoire in A rchaeal g enomes). The data have been presented in a systematic way with intuitive browse and search facilities for easy retrieval of information. Access to these curated datasets should expedite large-scale analysis of archaeal chaperone networks and significantly advance our understanding of operation and regulation of the protein folding machinery in archaea. Researchers could then translate this knowledge to comprehend the more complex protein folding pathways in eukaryotic systems. The database is freely available at http://14.139.227.92/mkumar/cragdb/ .

Description: We study the dynamical instability of a spherically symmetric collapsing star in the context of f ( T ) gravity. For this purpose, we assume power-law f ( T ) model with non-dissipative anisotropic fluid distribution and find the dynamical equations which are used to construct collapse equation. The perturbation scheme is applied to all matter, metric and f ( T ) functions. We formulate the collapse equation under perturbation to investigate dynamical instability ranges in Newtonian as well as post-Newtonian regimes. It is found that these ranges depend on structural quantities of the collapsing star through adiabatic index. Finally, we develop some constraints on positivity of these quantities to meet the dynamical instability condition.
