    Description: We present a detailed clustering analysis of the young stellar population across the star-forming ring galaxy NGC 6503, based on the deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry obtained with the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey. We apply a contour-based map analysis technique and identify in the stellar surface density map 244 distinct star-forming structures at various levels of significance. These stellar complexes are found to be organized in a hierarchical fashion with 95 per cent being members of three dominant super-structures located along the star-forming ring. The size distribution of the identified structures and the correlation between their radii and numbers of stellar members show power-law behaviours, as expected from scale-free processes. The self-similar distribution of young stars is further quantified from their autocorrelation function, with a fractal dimension of ~1.7 for length-scales between ~20 pc and 2.5 kpc. The young stellar radial distribution sets the extent of the star-forming ring at radial distances between 1 and 2.5 kpc. About 60 per cent of the young stars belong to the detected stellar structures, while the remaining stars are distributed among the complexes, still inside the ring of the galaxy. The analysis of the time-dependent clustering of young populations shows a significant change from a more clustered to a more distributed behaviour in a time-scale of ~60 Myr. The observed hierarchy in stellar clustering is consistent with star formation being regulated by turbulence across the ring. The rotational velocity difference between the edges of the ring suggests shear as the driving mechanism for this process. Our findings reveal the interesting case of an inner ring forming stars in a hierarchical fashion.

    Description: We present the first study of GALEX far-ultraviolet (FUV) luminosity functions of individual star-forming regions within a sample of 258 nearby galaxies spanning a large range in total stellar mass and star formation properties. We identify ~65 000 star-forming regions (i.e. FUV sources), measure each galaxy's luminosity function, and characterize the relationships between the luminosity function slope (α) and several global galaxy properties. A final sample of 82 galaxies with reliable luminosity functions are used to define these relationships and represent the largest sample of galaxies with the largest range of galaxy properties used to study the connection between luminosity function properties and galaxy environment. We find that α correlates with global star formation properties, where galaxies with higher star formation rates and star formation rate densities ( SFR ) tend to have flatter luminosity function slopes. In addition, we find that neither stochastic sampling of the luminosity function in galaxies with low-number statistics nor the effects of blending due to distance can fully account for these trends. We hypothesize that the flatter slopes in high SFR galaxies is due to higher gas densities and higher star formation efficiencies which result in proportionally greater numbers of bright star-forming regions. Finally, we create a composite luminosity function composed of star-forming regions from many galaxies and find a break in the luminosity function at brighter luminosities. However, we find that this break is an artefact of varying detection limits for galaxies at different distances.

    Description: We study the stellar mass Tully–Fisher relation (TFR; stellar mass versus rotation velocity) for a morphologically blind selection of emission line galaxies in the field at redshifts 0.1 〈  z  〈 0.375. Kinematics ( g , V rot ) are measured from emission lines in Keck/DEIMOS spectra and quantitative morphology is measured from V - and I -band Hubble images. We find a transition stellar mass in the TFR, log M * /M  = 9.5. Above this mass, nearly all galaxies are rotation dominated, on average more morphologically disc-like according to quantitative morphology, and lie on a relatively tight TFR. Below this mass, the TFR has significant scatter to low rotation velocity and galaxies can either be rotation-dominated discs on the TFR or asymmetric or compact galaxies which scatter off. We refer to this transition mass as the ‘mass of disc formation’, M df because above it all star-forming galaxies form discs (except for a small number of major mergers and highly star-forming systems), whereas below it a galaxy may or may not form a disc.

    Description: On 1 April 2006, the Taitung earthquake ( M w  6.1) occurred in Taiwan at the boundary between the Philippine Sea and Eurasian plates, where high convergence rates contributed to the development of Plio-Pleistocene orogeny in the region. From the joint inversion of seismic and geodetic data, we identified the event’s fault geometry and reconstructed the distribution of coseismic fault slip. We modeled fault geometries with increasing complexity and selected the model that best reproduced all datasets, simultaneously. Even though the earthquake magnitude was moderate, rupturing occurred in two steps. The initial rupture was generated on a listric, north–south-trending fault (for which dip decreases with increasing depth), and was immediately followed by movement along a perpendicular structure that cross-cuts the main fault at 5 km south of the earthquake hypocenter. The average slip along the rupture was 30 cm, with a maximum of 87 cm. Oblique-reverse fault movement was characterized by a predominant left-lateral component. The amount of slip is well constrained for offsets of more than 5 cm, with an associated uncertainty of 32%. For slip amounts greater than 5 cm, uncertainties on rake and rupture time are 11° and 0.54 s, respectively. The rupture propagated from the hypocenter bilaterally, moving slightly faster toward the south (2.5±0.4 km/s) than to the north (1.7±0.1 km/s). To the south, the rupture was rapidly transmitted upward at the junction with the cross-cutting east–west segment, whereas in the north, the rupture remained confined to the lower segment of the main fault. From Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and seismic data (time window 〈1 min), we infer that the cross-cutting segment was activated following coseismic rupture on the main north–south fault, yet close enough in time to be associated with coseismic movement acquired by GPS (daily solutions).

    Description: Motivation: Analysing the joint association between a large set of responses and predictors is a fundamental statistical task in integrative genomics, exemplified by numerous expression Quantitative Trait Loci (eQTL) studies. Of particular interest are the so-called ‘ hotspots ’ , important genetic variants that regulate the expression of many genes. Recently, attention has focussed on whether eQTLs are common to several tissues, cell-types or, more generally, conditions or whether they are specific to a particular condition. Results: We have implemented MT-HESS, a Bayesian hierarchical model that analyses the association between a large set of predictors, e.g. SNPs, and many responses, e.g. gene expression, in multiple tissues, cells or conditions. Our Bayesian sparse regression algorithm goes beyond ‘ one-at-a-time ’ association tests between SNPs and responses and uses a fully multivariate model search across all linear combinations of SNPs, coupled with a model of the correlation between condition/tissue-specific responses. In addition, we use a hierarchical structure to leverage shared information across different genes, thus improving the detection of hotspots. We show the increase of power resulting from our new approach in an extensive simulation study. Our analysis of two case studies highlights new hotspots that would remain undetected by standard approaches and shows how greater prediction power can be achieved when several tissues are jointly considered.     Description: We present the global optical photometry of 246 galaxies in the Local Volume Legacy (LVL) survey. The full volume-limited sample consists of 258 nearby ( D 〈 11 Mpc) galaxies whose absolute B -band magnitude span a range of –9.6 〈 M B 〈 –20.7 mag. A composite optical ( UBVR ) data set is constructed from observed UBVR and Sloan Digital Sky Survey ugriz imaging, where the ugriz magnitudes are transformed into UBVR . We present photometry within three galaxy apertures defined at UV, optical, and IR wavelengths. Flux comparisons between these apertures reveal that the traditional optical R25 galaxy apertures do not fully encompass extended sources. Using the larger IR apertures, we find colour–colour relationships where later type spiral and irregular galaxies tend to be bluer than earlier type galaxies. These data provide the missing optical emission from which future LVL studies can construct the full panchromatic (UV–optical–IR) spectral energy distributions.

    Description: We present empirical colour transformations between Sloan Digital Sky Survey ugri and Johnson–Cousins UBVR c photometry for nearby galaxies ( D  〈 11 Mpc). We use the Local Volume Legacy (LVL) galaxy sample where there are 90 galaxies with overlapping observational coverage for these two filter sets. The LVL galaxy sample consists of normal, non-starbursting galaxies. We also examine how well the LVL galaxy colours are described by previous transformations derived from standard calibration stars and model-based galaxy templates. We find significant galaxy colour scatter around most of the previous transformation relationships. In addition, the previous transformations show systematic offsets between transformed and observed galaxy colours which are visible in observed colour–colour trends. The LVL-based galaxy transformations show no systematic colour offsets and reproduce the observed colour–colour galaxy trends.

    Description: We present the panchromatic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the Local Volume Legacy (LVL) survey which consists of 258 nearby galaxies ( D  〈 11 Mpc). The wavelength coverage spans the ultraviolet to the infrared (1500 Å–24 μm) which is utilized to derive global physical properties (i.e. star formation rate, stellar mass, internal extinction due to dust). With these data, we find colour–colour relationships and correlated trends between observed and physical properties (i.e. optical magnitudes and dust properties, optical colour and specific star formation rate, and ultraviolet–infrared colour and metallicity). The SEDs are binned by different galaxy properties to reveal how each property affects the observed shape of these SEDs. In addition, due to the volume-limited nature of LVL, we utilize the dwarf-dominated galaxy sample to test star formation relationships established with higher mass galaxy samples. We find good agreement with the star-forming ‘main-sequence’ relationship, but find a systematic deviation in the infrared ‘main sequence’ at low luminosities. This deviation is attributed to suppressed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) formation in low-metallicity environments and/or the destruction of PAHs in more intense radiation fields occurring near a suggested threshold in star formation rates (sSFR) at a value of log(sSFR) ~ –10.2.

    Description: As a complement to our optical and near-infrared study of the continuum properties of GX 339–4 in the two hard and one soft state observations made by the ESO/Very Large Telescope (VLT), FOcal Reducer and Spectrograph #2 (FORS2) and infrared spectrometer and array camera (ISAAC) in early 2010, we report here on the results of our spectral line analysis for the same observations. In the soft state, the presence of strong Balmer, Paschen and Brackett emission lines points to the optical and near-infrared spectra stemming from the irradiated chromosphere of the optically thick and geometrically thin accretion disc. Most of these H i features are still detected in emission in both hard states but are veiled by the compact jets continuum. We also confirm the presence of a broad Hβ absorption feature, prominent in the soft state and shallower in the first hard state, which we argue forms in the deep layers of the optically thick accretion disc. However, this trough is absent in the second hard state, a likely consequence of the formation of a geometrically thick extended envelope that arises above the disc plane and eventually enshrouds the region where the Hβ absorption feature forms. We detect this envelope through the presence of a broad Paβ emission line, which is constant during the first hard state but correlates with the underlying continuum during the second hard state, pointing to changing physical properties. We consider that this behaviour may be consistent with the launch of a thermally driven accretion disc wind during the second hard state.
