Notizen: An overview of Electro-Magnetic Tomography (EMT) using mutual inductance measurements is presented. The paper reviews the technique and principle of operation and gives a description of three case studies, which cover some of the generic design considerations and which illustrate the potential variety for inductive EMT systems. Results from the systems are described. These systems are presently experimental and possible future developments and applications are discussed.

Notizen: We have utilized micellar electrokinetic chromatography with sodium deoxycholate micelles to separate the enantiomers of bis(8-((pyridine-2-methylene)amino)quinoline)iron(II) hexafluorophosphate, Fe(PMAQ)2(PF6)2, bis(8-((pyridine-2-methylene)amino)lepidine iron(II) hexafluorophosphate, Fe(PMAL)2(PF6)2, and bis(1-(2-pyridinyl)ethylidine)-8-aminoquinoline iron(II) hexafluorophosphate, Fe(PEAQ)2(PF6)2. The influence of 13 water miscible organic additives on the resolution of each pair of enantiomers was investigated. Significant changes in resolution are seen depending upon the particular organic additive used in the separation buffer. In addition, the effects of acetone concentration on the resolution of these enantiomers in bile salt solution was investigated. Resolution for all three pairs of enantiomers is maximized in a buffer solution containing 15% acetone. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: The effects of adding inorganic electrolyte (below the critical coagulation concentration) have been investigated in two systems for the emulsion polymerisation of styrene. In one system, potassium chloride, at different concentrations, was added at the end of interval I, using three different ionic emulsifiers: potassium octadecanoate which has a low critical micelle concentration (CMC), potassium dodecanoate and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), which have moderately high CMC. A significant increase in the rate of polymerisation was observed in all cases even at the higher levels of electrolyte at which the rate is reduced if the electrolyte is added from the onset of polymerisation. In the second system, the effects of adding sodium chloride, in concentrations up to 0.2M, on the seeded emulsion polymerisation of styrene have been followed. A significant increase in the rate was observed as electrolyte level was increased, with no significant change in particle size. Saturation swelling measurements indicated a slight increase in monomer concentration inside the particles as electrolyte concentration was increased. Evaluation of the average number of free radicals per particle, n¯, by a steady state approach indicates an increase in the value of n¯ as electrolyte level is increased. The value of n¯ is below 0.5 but approaches this value at the highest electrolyte concentration. The increased surface area of the particles may account for this effect by increasing the capture efficiency of the radicals by the particles.

Notizen: The active ketenylidene-(2a) or thioketenylidenetriphenylphosphoranes (2b) react with 2-benzylidene-1,3-indandione (1), 5-benzylidenebarbituric acid (11), and 4-benzylidene-1,2-diphenyl-3,5-pyrazolidinedione (16) to give the corresponding pyranones and thioxopyranones (3a,b, 12a,b) and (17a,b), respectively. On the other hand, compounds 1 and 11 can be converted by reaction with the stabilized alkylidenephosphoranes 4a-e into the phosphoranylidenes 6a-e and 13a-e. Moreover, the oxaphosphinins 8 or 14 and the oxazaphosphinins 10 or 15 were obtained when compounds 1 and 11 were allowed to react with the phosphorane 7 and the iminophosphorane 9, respectively. Some of these new organophosphorus compounds are found to have insecticidal and molluscicidal properties against cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis larvae and Biomphalaria alexandrina snails. © 1997 John Wiley, & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Nylon 6 fibers were annealed in air at 160°C for periods ranging from 1 to 10 h. Their spectral reflectance values were measured. Color parameters, including luminance factor, dominant wavelength, purity, and the color difference between annealed nylon 6 fiber samples and unheated ones were calculated. The observed variations in the colors of samples were assumed due to the thermal and oxidation degradations. The behavior of the color parameters with heating duration was compared with the general kinetic curve of thermooxidative degradation of polymers and the match between them is discussed. The color difference ΔE values is recommended for monitoring the thermooxidative degradation of nylon 6 fibers. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: A finite-element analysis of Taylor flow in a cylindrical capillary was performed using a commercial FEM program (FIDAP) to solve the fundamental fluid dynamics equations together with the capillary forces at the gas-liquid interface. A moving-surface formulation was used to calculate the bubble shape. The thickness of the liquid film surrounding the gas bubble, the degree of mixing in the liquid phase, and the slip velocity between the two phases were calculated. These parameters influence the performance of monolith reactors operating in the Taylor flow regime. On comparison with experimental results it was found that the FEM calculation generally predicts a thinner liquid film, which can possibly be explained in terms of a peripheral variation in surface tension. Moreover, the wavelength of the wiggles predicted in the liquid film near the tail end of the bubble was compared to those arising from a simplified mathematical analysis available in the literature. Good agreement was found for Ca 〈 0.005, while for higher Ca the FEM predicts significantly shorter wavelengths, indicating that the lubrication theory is not valid here.

Notizen: LiClO4-mediated one-pot reactions of aldehydes with (trimethylsilyl)dialkylamines 2, 5 or 19 and C nucleophiles such as enamines 3, 10 and 12, imines 7 and 11 or (trimethylsilyl)enol ethers 8 and 9 afforded the corresponding aminoalkylation products in high yields. Whereas by using aromatic aldehydes, such as benzaldehyde, pyridine-3-carbaldehyde or thiophene-2-carbaldehyde, high diasteroselectivity was achieved, the aminoalkylation of aliphatic aldehydes such as isobutyraldehyde and pivalaldehyde lacked diastereoselectivity. Enantioselective Mannich reactions using chiral enamines 22 and 23 are reported.

Notizen: Numerous cell types, such as monocytes and osteoclasts, are involved in calcified matrix degradation. In this context, calcium-phosphate ceramics present similar degradation processes in vivo and in vitro to those found in a natural calcified substrate. As the monocyte/macrophage lineage is among the first cells to appear in ceramic implantation sites, it is a key protagonist in inflammatory reaction and biodegradation mechanisms. This study investigated the ability of human monocytes/macrophages activated by various agents [lipopolysaccharides (LPS), polymyxin B (PMB)] to degrade biphasic calcium-phosphate ceramics. PMB sulfate is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that modulates LPS-induced cell activities in vivo and in vitro. Degradation pits (about 10 μm) produced on the pellet surface by these monocytes were discrete, with well defined margins. LPS increased the degradation of calcium-phosphate ceramic (number of lacunae, mean pellet surface area degraded) in a dose-dependent manner whereas polymyxin B downmodulated it significantly. The addition of 2 μg/mL of polymyxin B reduced the number of degradation lacunae and the extent of degraded surface area induced by 0.1 μg/mL LPS by 87% and 64%, respectively. Thus this cell culture system can be very useful in the study of cellular degradation of biomaterials and of the influence of therapeutic agents that may modulate these cell activities. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notizen: This study investigated the effects of human growth hormone (hGH) on the monocyte/macrophage lineage, the first cell population involved in degradation of calcium phosphate ceramic after in vivo implantation. Monocytes isolated from human blood were cultured on biphasic calcium pellets (200 mg) for 8 days in the presence of lipopolysaccharides (LPS, 0.5 μg/mL), hGH (10 and 50 ng/mL), or an association of LPS with hGH (10 and 50 ng/mL). Unlike LPS, hGH significantly decreased (about 25%) the total number of lacunae formed by monocytes. However, hGH induced the formation of lacunae with a greater surface area (about a 90% increase) as compared to the control. Finally, intense upmodulation (about a 250% increase) of lacuna surface area was observed in the presence of both soluble factors, suggesting that hGH and LPS act synergistically. In view of the development of a drug delivery system for hGH bone release, this study shows that hGH not only stimulates bone cells implicated in the synthesis of the extracellular matrix but also those involved in the early degradation of calcium phosphate biomaterial. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
