Description: Smith, W. K., and Solow, A. R. 2012. Missing and presumed lost: extinction in the ocean and its inference. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: 89–94. The number of modern extinctions in the ocean is unknown. The actual demise of the last individual of a species is essentially unobservable, so extinction can only be inferred. Statistical methods are described for inferring extinction from sighting records, species–area considerations, and taxonomic samples collected at two different times. The methods are illustrated using a variety of real datasets, including a sighting record of the Caribbean monk seal and results from three surveys of benthic invertebrates.

Description: Sivle, L. D., Kvadsheim, P. H., Ainslie, M. A., Solow, A., Handegard, N. O. Nordlund, N., and Lam, F-P. A. 2012. Impact of naval sonar signals on Atlantic herring ( Clupea harengus ) during summer feeding. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: 1078–1085. Naval anti-submarine sonars produce intense sounds within the hearing range of Atlantic herring ( Clupea harengus ). In this study, schools of Atlantic herring were exposed to sonar signals of 1–2 kHz (low-frequency active sonar, LFAS) and 6–7 kHz (mid-frequency active sonar, MFAS) and playbacks of killer whale feeding sounds during their summer feeding migration in the Norwegian Sea. The fish schools neither significantly dived nor changed their packing density in response to the LFAS and MFAS transmissions received by the fish at estimated sound pressure levels ( SPL s; RMS) up to 176 and 157 dB re 1 μPa and estimated cumulative sound exposure levels up to 181 and 162 dB re 1 μPa² s, respectively. In contrast, killer whale feeding sounds induced diving responses at received SPL s at ~150 dB re 1 μPa. Herring behaviour was studied by using a 116-kHz hull mounted fishery sonar. This seems a promising method for studying the behaviour of free-ranging fish in situations in which other methods are difficult to use, such as migrating schools and fish close to the surface.

Description: Efforts at species conservation in the United States have tended to be opportunistic and uncoordinated. Recently, however, ecologists and economists have begun to develop more systematic approaches. Here, the problem of efficiently allocating scarce conservation resources in the selection of sites for biological reserves is addressed. With the use of county-level data on land prices and the incidence of endangered species, it is shown that accounting for heterogeneity in land prices results in a substantial increase in efficiency in terms of either the cost of achieving a fixed coverage of species or the coverage attained from a fixed budget.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Ando -- Camm -- Polasky -- Solow -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1998 Mar 27;279(5359):2126-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉A. Description: Oceanic plankton have been hypothesized to occur in micropatches (〈10 meters) that can have a large impact on marine ecosystem dynamics. Towed video microscopy was used to unobtrusively determine distributions of oceanic plankton over a continuum of scales from microns to hundreds of meters. Distinct, taxa-specific aggregations measuring less than 20 centimeters were found for copepods but not for nonmotile (cyanobacterial colonies) or asexual (doliolid phorozooids) forms, which suggests that these small patches are related to mating. Significant patchiness was also found on larger scales and was correlated among taxa, indicating physical control. These video observations provide new insights into basic plankton ecology by allowing quantitative assessment of individual plankton in their natural, undisturbed state.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Davis, C S -- Gallager, S M -- Solow, A R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1992 Jul 10;257(5067):230-2.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17794756" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
