    Description: Xylose residue (XR), after diluted acid treatment of corncob, consists of cellulose and lignin. However, structural changes of XR lignin have not been investigated comprehensively, and this has seriously hindered the efficient utilization of lignin. In this study, corncob milled wood lignin (CC MWL), and xylose residue milled wood lignin (XR MWL) were isolated according to the modified milled wood lignin (MWL) method. The structural features of two lignin fractions were thoroughly investigated via fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and two dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D NMR) spectroscopy techniques. XR MWL with higher yield and lower bound carbohydrate contents presented more phenolic OH contents than CC MWL due to partial cleavage of β-O-4. Furthermore, the molecular weights of XR MWL were increased, possibly because of condensation of the lignin during the xylose production. A study on antioxidant activity showed that XR lignin had better radical scavenging ability than that of 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methyl-phenol (BHT) and CC MWL. The results suggested that the lignin in xylose residue, showing great antioxidant properties, has potential applications in food additives.

    Description: As this study examined the issue of surface acoustic wave (SAW) torque sensor which interfered in high rotational speed, the gyroscopic effect generated by rotation was analyzed. Firstly, the SAW coupled equations which contained torque and rotation loads were deduced, and the torque calculation error caused by rotation was solved. Following this, the hardware of the SAW gyroscopic effect testing platform and the turntable experiment were designed to verify the correctness of the theoretical calculation. Finally, according to the experimental data, the gyroscopic effect was compensated by multivariate polynomial fitting (MPF), Gaussian processes regression (GPR), and least squares support vector machine algorithms (LSSVM). The comparison results showed that the LSSVM has the obvious advantage. For improving the function of LSSVM model, chaos estimation of distributed algorithm (CEDA) was proposed to optimize the super parameters of the LSSVM, and numerical simulation results showed that: (1) CEDA is superior to traditional estimation of distributed algorithms in convergence speed and anti-premature ability; (2) the performance of CEDA-LSSVM is better than genetic algorithms (GA)-LSSVM and particle swarm optimization (PSO)-LSSVM. After compensating by CEDA-LSSVM, the magnitude of the torque calculation relative error was 10−4 in any direction. This method has a significant effect on reducing gyroscopic interference, and it lays a foundation for the engineering application of SAW torque sensor.

    Description: In an attempt to resolve the increasingly severe grassland degradation, China has implemented a series of grassland protection policies. Herders are one of the key stakeholders in these policies, and their willingness to participate in grassland protection directly affects the effective implementation of these policies. We conducted a field survey of herders in Qinghai and Gansu Provinces to identify the factors that impact the willingness of herders to adopt these policies and then incorporated a number of these factors in the extension framework of the Institutional Analysis and Design (IAD) model. First, we analyzed the willingness of herders to adopt grassland protection policies using binary logistic regression. After dividing the herders into two categories based on whether or not they had participated in grassland protection, we repeated the binary regression analysis for both categories of herders. The results indicate that their willingness to adopt protection measures was influenced by their household characteristics, procedures and rules, the market environment, and cognitive reform. Herders who had not participated were mainly concerned about the impact of protection policies on household livelihoods and whether they would receive adequate subsidies. Based on this analysis, we understand that problems still exist with China’s grassland governance policies and have proposed strategies to improve these.
