    Notes: Physical properties of zinc oxide films deposited by dual-ion-beam sputtering are analyzed to point out the performance of this technique for the deposition of this material. The films are deposited by sputtering a zinc oxide target with an argon-ion beam, while a second low-energy beam, the assistance ion beam, impinges directly on the growing films. Results are presented for ZnO films deposited at room temperature with different oxygen/argon ratios in assistance ion beam and different sputtering ion-beam currents. Elemental, structural, and electrical analyses have been performed on films. All the films show the typical crystallographic orientation, with the c axis perpendicular to the substrate. The oxygen percentage in the assistance ion beam plays an important role in controlling the electrical resistivity of the films.

    Notes: The stability of the electrical and optical properties of dual ion beam sputtered zinc oxide films, with resistivities of 10−3 Ω cm, were investigated. ZnO films were deposited at room temperature by argon ion beam sputtering of a zinc oxide target. Argon or hydrogen/argon mixtures of positive ions were irradiated by the second source on the growing film. After heat treatment in air, no significant changes in the electrical and optical properties are observed for films irradiated by hydrogen/argon ions. ZnO films prepared by this method would be useful in the production of transparent and conductive electrodes for practical use at high temperature.

    Notes: Secondary-ion-mass spectrometry (SIMS) and near-field (NF) methods have been applied to study Ti:LiNbO3 optical waveguides. Ti concentration as a function of diffusion process parameters has been studied by the SIMS method. The main determining factors that were found to affect the depth-diffusion behavior of titanium in LiNbO3 slab waveguides are the initial thickness of the dopant film and the diffusion temperature. Anisotropy in the diffusion rate for Xand has been applied to the refractive index profile reconstruction for single-mode optical channel waveguides. A sharp change in the index at the air–guide interface has been observed, as expected. The dependence of refractive index change on Ti concentration has been found to be nonlinear, such as quadratic, approximately. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A dual-ion-beam technique for the deposition of TiN thin films is described. The metal-atom flux is supplied by sputtering a titanium target with an inert ion beam, while the reactive flux is supplied directly to the growing film by a low-energy ion beam. Results are presented for titanium films deposited at room temperature under a range of N+2 ion bombardment to form TiN. Analysis gives the incorporation of nitrogen, the background gas contamination, and the optical and electrical properties of TiN films.

    Notes: It is shown that it is possible to deposit thin films with various CFx composition (1.26≤x≤1.83) by ion-beam sputtering. These materials with "teflon-like'' composition have been deposited at room temperature by Ar ion-beam sputtering of a teflon target; the film chemical composition has been determined by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. The fluorine-to-carbon ratio of the films, as well as their crosslinking degree, is shown to depend on the energy of the ions impinging on the target.

    Description: α-alumina pre-sintered samples were subjected to flash sintering at 1200 °C under differing electric field strengths. The analysis of the relation between the incubation time and pre-sintering temperature clearly shows that the presence of pores and surfaces within the sample plays a central role in field-assisted sintering behavior of the material. The observed behavior is accounted for by the strong non-linear electrical conductivity shown by porous alumina at high field strength. The observed non-ohmic conductivity can also be related to the “pre-breakdown” behavior previously described by Frenkel. Literature results suggest that the field involved in flash sintering of alumina is comparable with the dielectric strength at high temperature. We can also state that dielectric breakdown and flash sintering in alumina are associated with similar physical phenomena.

    Description: Helicopter Emergency and Medical Service (HEMS) vehicles require a specially configured cabin that supports the quick transport of a rescue team to the site of an emergency and return of patients back to a full capacity hospital, while sustaining the patients’ health using specifically designed, but otherwise state-of-the-art life-support equipment. The effectiveness and safety of the service may be challenged by the vibratory level, which could be improved by optimally positioning the affected subjects within the cabin. However, the bare dynamical response of the airframe can lead to erroneous evaluation of vibration performance, since pilots, crew, patients, and medical equipment dynamically interact with the helicopter through their interfaces with the structure. Therefore, layout optimization of a HEMS vehicle for low vibration requires the capability to efficiently analyze a large set of candidate coupled helicopter-interface-subject configurations, reaching a suitable trade-off between model detail and computational cost. This work presents an effective vibration rating of medical helicopters to support vibration hazard reduction by minimization of cabin interior accelerations. The tool is able to model high-fidelity rotorcraft aeroservoelasticity, easily connect formulations representing the dynamics of humans, equipment, and their interfaces, and calculate the vibration performance of the resulting coupled models. The approach is applied to a medium-weight helicopter to find its lowest vibration HEMS configuration. It is demonstrated that the optimal positioning of HEMS subjects can significantly reduce vibration hazard and improve operation safety, nearly as effectively as the application of vibration attenuation solutions with a fixed cabin layout.

    Description: Gyroscopes are one of the next killer applications for the MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) sensors industry. Many mature applications have already been developed and produced in limited volumes for the automotive, consumer, industrial, medical, and military markets. Plenty of high-volume applications, over 100 million per year, have been calling for low-cost gyroscopes. Bulk silicon is a promising candidate for low-cost gyroscopes due to its large scale availability and maturity of its manufacturing industry. Nevertheless, it is not suitable for a real monolithic IC integration and requires a dedicated packaging. New designs are supposed to eliminate the need for magnets and metal case package, and allow for a real monolithic MEMS-IC (Integrated Circuit) electronic system. In addition, a drastic cost reduction could be achieved by utilizing off-the-shelf plastic packaging with lead frames for the final assembly. The present paper puts forward the design of a novel tri-axial gyroscope based on rotating comb-drives acting as both capacitive sensors and actuators. The comb-drives are comprised of a single monolithic moving component (rotor) and fixed parts (stators). The former is made out of different concentrated masses connected by curved silicon beams in order to decouple the motion signals. The sensor was devised to be fabricated through the PolyMUMPs® process and it is intended for working in air in order to semplify the MEMS-IC monolithic integration.

    Description: In this work, SiNx/a-Si/SiNx caps on conductive coplanar waveguides (CPWs) are proposed for thin film encapsulation of radio-frequency microelectromechanical systems (RF MEMS), in view of the application of these devices in fifth generation (5G) and modern telecommunication systems. Simplification and cost reduction of the fabrication process were obtained, using two etching processes in the same barrel chamber to create a matrix of holes through the capping layer and to remove the sacrificial layer under the cap. Encapsulating layers with etch holes of different size and density were fabricated to evaluate the removal of the sacrificial layer as a function of the percentage of the cap perforated area. Barrel etching process parameters also varied. Finally, a full three-dimensional finite element method-based simulation model was developed to predict the impact of fabricated thin film encapsulating caps on RF performance of CPWs.

    Description: Considering settlement characteristics and population dynamics together over multiple spatio-temporal scales, the present study analyzes the spatial distribution of sparse settlements and population surrounding a large city in Southern Europe (Athens, Greece), in relation with long-term metropolitan growth and recent economic downturns. Results of the analysis identify regional-scale processes of urban compaction during economic expansion (2000s) with incorporation of scattered settlements in a high-density urban fabric, and moderate urban dispersion affecting low-density, peripheral areas in the subsequent period of recession (2010s). However, more heterogeneous dynamics were observed at the local scale. With economic expansion, a slight increase in the number of settlements was observed in local districts experiencing intense sprawl in earlier decades. With recession, a slight decrease in the number of settlements was, in turn, recorded in some rural districts surrounding compact urban centers, likely acting as local hotspots of urban re-densification. Given the multiplicity of socioeconomic factors involved, our findings highlight how urban development follows sequential phases of compaction and dispersion, based on locally differentiated spatial regimes characterizing settlement expansion and population growth. Sustainable urban management should face more actively with increasingly fragmented settlement dynamics at the fringe, prefiguring an appropriate spatial balance between urban centers and sparse settlements in light of recent demographic trends.
