Notes: A broad-beam ion source is developed for ion-beam etching of quartz wafers, which are used in resonators with a high basic frequency of the order of magnitude of 1 GHz. The improvement of uniformity of the extracted ion beam is investigated. The double-grid multiple-aperture ion optics is adopted, in which perveance is matched by varying both the aperture diameters and spaces between grids. The configuration of the magnetic field is optimized. Measured at the target of 12 cm from the grids, the area of uniform region (nonuniformity 〈5%) is approximately equal to the area of the bored region of the grids (12 cm diam) and 1/1.78 of the cross-section area of the anode (16 cm diam). A broad beam of 100–1000 eV and 0.1–2.0 mA/cm2 is extracted from the source to fulfill the requirement of the etching process. Without any cooling system, the ion source is installed in vacuum chamber. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Description: A high-accuracy space smart payload integrated with attitude and position (SSPIAP) is a new type of optical remote sensor that can autonomously complete image positioning. Inner orientation parameters (IOPs) are a prerequisite for image position determination of an SSPIAP. The calibration of IOPs significantly influences the precision of image position determination of SSPIAPs. IOPs can be precisely measured and calibrated in a laboratory. However, they may drift to a significant degree because of vibrations during complicated launches and on-orbit functioning. Therefore, laboratory calibration methods are not suitable for on-orbit functioning. We propose an on-orbit self-calibration method for SSPIAPs. Our method is based on an auto-collimating dichroic filter combined with a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) point-source focal plane. A MEMS procedure is used to manufacture a light transceiver focal plane, which integrates with point light sources and a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor. A dichroic filter is used to fabricate an auto-collimation light reflection element. The dichroic filter and the MEMS point light sources focal plane are integrated into an SSPIAP so it can perform integrated self-calibration. Experiments show that our method can achieve micrometer-level precision, which is good enough to complete real-time calibration without temporal or spatial limitations.

Description: Sample data plays an important role in land cover (LC) map validation. Traditionally, they are collected through field survey or image interpretation, either of which is costly, labor-intensive and time-consuming. In recent years, massive geo-tagged texts are emerging on the web and they contain valuable information for LC map validation. However, this kind of special textual data has seldom been analyzed and used for supporting LC map validation. This paper examines the potential of geo-tagged web texts as a new cost-free sample data source to assist LC map validation and proposes an active data collection approach. The proposed approach uses a customized deep web crawler to search for geo-tagged web texts based on land cover-related keywords and string-based rules matching. A data transformation based on buffer analysis is then performed to convert the collected web texts into LC sample data. Using three provinces and three municipalities directly under the Central Government in China as study areas, geo-tagged web texts were collected to validate artificial surface class of China’s 30-meter global land cover datasets (GlobeLand30-2010). A total of 6283 geo-tagged web texts were collected at a speed of 0.58 texts per second. The collected texts about built-up areas were transformed into sample data. User’s accuracy of 82.2% was achieved, which is close to that derived from formal expert validation. The preliminary results show that geo-tagged web texts are valuable ancillary data for LC map validation and the proposed approach can improve the efficiency of sample data collection.

Description: Memristive devices have been widely employed to emulate biological synaptic behavior. In these cases, the memristive switching generally originates from electrical field induced ion migration or Joule heating induced phase change. In this letter, the Ti/ZnO/Pt structure was found to show memristive switching ascribed to a carrier trapping/detrapping of the trap sites (e.g., oxygen vacancies or zinc interstitials) in ZnO. The carrier trapping/detrapping level can be controllably adjusted by regulating the current compliance level or voltage amplitude. Multi-level conductance states can, therefore, be realized in such memristive device. The spike-timing-dependent plasticity, an important Hebbian learning rule, has been implemented in this type of synaptic device. Compared with filamentary-type memristive devices, purely electronic memristors have potential to reduce their energy consumption and work more stably and reliably, since no structural distortion occurs.

Description: Multiple stimulated emission fluorescence photoacoustic (MSEF-PA) phenomenon is demonstrated in this letter. Under simultaneous illumination of pumping light and stimulated emission light, the fluorescence emission process is speeded up by the stimulated emission effect. This leads to nonlinear enhancement of photoacoustic signal while the quantity of absorbed photons is more than that of fluorescent molecules illuminated by pumping light. The electronic states' specificity of fluorescent molecular can also be labelled by the MSEF-PA signals, which can potentially be used to obtain fluorescence excitation spectrum in deep scattering tissue with nonlinearly enhanced photoacoustic detection. In this preliminary study, the fluorescence excitation spectrum is reconstructed by MSEF-PA signals through sweeping the wavelength of exciting light, which confirms the theoretical derivation well.

Description: The frequency domain analysis of stimulated Raman Photoacoustic (PA) induced by laser pulses with Gaussian and rectangular temporal profiles is presented. Utilizing the pulsed laser with nanosecond and microsecond pulse width with Gaussian temporal profile, the frequency component of the PA signals cannot be differentiated between the stimulated Raman PA and the linear optical absorption PA, which is limited by the response bandwidth of biological tissue. When the laser pulses with rectangular temporal profile are used, we deduced the PA expression and numerically derived its frequency spectrum. The frequency components of PA signal induced by the stimulated Raman phonons is more than that induced by optical absorption in some low frequency ranges, which is inside the bandwidth of tissue system. Therefore, stimulated Raman PA signal can be distinguished from the linear optical absorption PA signal in frequency domain. Numerical simulations were conducted in this paper to demonstrate the proposition and feasibility of stimulated Raman PA in frequency domain, which will be experimentally validated in future work.

Description: A large-scale re-vegetation supported by the Grain for Green Project (GGP) has greatly changed local eco-hydrological systems, with an impact on soil moisture conditions for the Chinese Loess Plateau. It is important to know how, exactly, re-vegetation influences soil moisture conditions, which not only crucially constrain growth and distribution of vegetation, and hence, further re-vegetation, but also determine the degree of soil desiccation and, thus, erosion risk in the region. In this study, three eco-environmental factors, which are Soil Water Index (SWI), the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and precipitation, were used to investigate the response of soil moisture in the one-meter layer of top soil to the re-vegetation during the GGP. SWI was estimated based on the backscatter coefficient produced by the European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS-1/2) and Meteorological Operational satellite program (MetOp), while NDVI was derived from SPOT imageries. Two separate periods, which are 1998–2000 and 2008–2010, were selected to examine the spatiotemporal pattern of the chosen eco-environmental factors. It has been shown that the amount of precipitation in 1998–2000 was close to that of 2008–2010 (the difference being 13.10 mm). From 1998–2000 to 2008–2010, the average annual NDVI increased for 80.99%, while the SWI decreased for 72.64% of the area on the Loess Plateau. The average NDVI over the Loess Plateau increased rapidly by 17.76% after the 10-year GGP project. However, the average SWI decreased by 4.37% for two-thirds of the area. More specifically, 57.65% of the area on the Loess Plateau experienced an increased NDVI and decreased SWI, 23.34% of the area had an increased NDVI and SWI. NDVI and SWI decreased simultaneously for 14.99% of the area, and the decreased NDVI and increased SWI occurred at the same time for 4.02% of the area. These results indicate that re-vegetation, human activities, and climate change have impacts on soil moisture. However, re-vegetation, which consumes a large quantity of soil water, may be the major factor for soil moisture change in most areas of the Loess Plateau. It is, therefore, suggested that Soil Moisture Content (SMC) should be kept in mind when carrying out re-vegetation in China’s arid and semi-arid regions.

Description: The (Nb + In) co-doped TiO 2 ceramics recently attracted considerable attention due to their colossal dielectric permittivity (CP) (∼100,000) and low dielectric loss (∼0.05). In this research, the 0.5 mol. % In-only, 0.5 mol. % Nb-only, and 0.5–7 mol. % (Nb + In) co-doped TiO 2 ceramics were synthesized by standard conventional solid-state reaction method. Microstructure studies showed that all samples were in pure rutile phase. The Nb and In ions were homogeneously distributed in the grain and grain boundary. Impedance spectroscopy and I-V behavior analysis demonstrated that the ceramics may compose of semiconducting grains and insulating grain boundaries. The high conductivity of grain was associated with the reduction of Ti 4+ ions to Ti 3+ ions, while the migration of oxygen vacancy may account for the conductivity of grain boundary. The effects of annealing treatment and bias filed on electrical properties were investigated for co-doped TiO 2 ceramics, where the electric behaviors of samples were found to be susceptible to the annealing treatment and bias field. The internal-barrier-layer-capacitance mechanism was used to explain the CP phenomenon, the effect of annealing treatment and nonlinear I-V behavior for co-doped rutile TiO 2 ceramics. Compared with CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 ceramics, the high activation energy of co-doped rutile TiO 2 (3.05 eV for grain boundary) was thought to be responsible for the low dielectric loss.

Description: Remote Sensing, Vol. 10, Pages 1281: Reconstruction of Three-Dimensional (3D) Indoor Interiors with Multiple Stories via Comprehensive Segmentation Remote Sensing doi: 10.3390/rs10081281 Authors: Lin Li Fei Su Fan Yang Haihong Zhu Dalin Li Xinkai Zuo Feng Li Yu Liu Shen Ying The fast and stable reconstruction of building interiors from scanned point clouds has recently attracted considerable research interest. However, reconstructing long corridors and connected areas across multiple floors has emerged as a substantial challenge. This paper presents a comprehensive segmentation method for reconstructing a three-dimensional (3D) indoor structure with multiple stories. With this method, the over-segmentation that usually occurs in the reconstruction of long corridors in a complex indoor environment is overcome by morphologically eroding the floor space to segment rooms and by overlapping the segmented room-space with partitioned cells via extracted wall lines. Such segmentation ensures both the integrity of the room-space partitions and the geometric regularity of the rooms. For spaces across floors in a multistory building, a peak-nadir-peak strategy in the distribution of points along the z-axis is proposed in order to extract connected areas across multiple floors. A series of experimental tests while using seven real-world 3D scans and eight synthetic models of indoor environments show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

Description: Materials, Vol. 11, Pages 972: Dislocation Based Flow Stress Model of 300M Steel in Isothermal Compression Process Materials doi: 10.3390/ma11060972 Authors: Rongchuang Chen Peng Guo Zhizhen Zheng Jianjun Li Fei Feng The relationship between microstructure and flow behaviour has attracted attention from many researchers for the past decades, whilst the influences of dislocation and recrystallization on flow stress have not been well understood, which led to failure in flow stress prediction at high temperature compressions. In this work, we tried to provide a novel explanation of the relationship between microstructure evolutions and flow behaviour, and the influence of dislocation and recrystallization on flow stress was investigated. A dislocation based flow stress model was proposed and applied for 300M steel at the strain rate of 0.01–10 s−1 and the temperature of 950–1150 °C. Results showed the established model could predict the flow stress both at constant strain rate conditions and at variable strain rate conditions. The present investigation is helpful to a better understanding of hardening and softening mechanisms in hot compression of 300M steel.
