Description: The Broad-complex Tramtrack and Bric-a-brac (BTB) domain participates in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, however its role is unknown in pepper plants. CaBPM4 has meprin and TRAF homology (MATH) and BTB domains at its N- and C-termini, respectively, and it contains a 1589-bp full-length cDNA that encodes a protein containing 403 amino acids. In this study, the pepper gene CaBPM4 (Capsicum annuum BTB-POZ and MATH domain protein) was cloned, and its role in responses to Phytophthora capsici, cold, drought, and salt stress were characterized. The results of quantitative RT-PCR revealed that CaBPM4 was down-regulated under P. capsici infection, salicylic acid, H2O2, and abscisic acid treatments, while abiotic stresses, including salt, cold, and drought, enhanced its transcript level. Furthermore, CaBPM4 silencing significantly impaired resistance to P. capsici, apparently by altering the transcript level of defense-related genes CaPR1, CaDEF1, and CaSAR82 and reducing root activity. However, CaBPM4-silenced plants exhibited remarkably increased peroxidase activity and decreased malondialdehyde concentrations, indicating that CaBPM4 may enhance resistance to salt and drought stress. Further study should focus on the mechanism by which CaBPM4 regulates the defense response to P. capsici infection and abiotic stresses.

Description: Indoor positioning using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons has attracted considerable attention after the release of the BLE protocol. A number of efforts have been exerted to improve the performance of BLE-based indoor positioning. However, few studies pay attention to the BLE-based indoor positioning in a dense Bluetooth environment, where the propagation of BLE signals become more complex and more fluctuant. In this paper, we draw attention to the problems resulting from the dense Bluetooth environment, and it turns out that the dense Bluetooth environment would result in a high received signal strength indication (RSSI) variation and a longtime interval collection of BLE. Hence, to mitigate the effects of the dense Bluetooth environment, we propose a hybrid method fusing sliding-window filtering, trilateration, dead reckoning and the Kalman filtering method to improve the performance of the BLE indoor positioning. The Kalman filter is exploited to merge the trilateration and dead reckoning. Extensive experiments in a real implementation are conducted to examine the performance of three approaches: trilateration, dead reckoning and the fusion method. The implementation results proved that the fusion method was the most effective method to improve the positioning accuracy and timeliness in a dense Bluetooth environment. The positioning root-mean-square error (RMSE) calculation results have showed that the hybrid method can achieve a real-time positioning and reduce error of indoor positioning.

Description: Composite solder is a promising route to improve the properties and reliability of Sn-based lead-free solder. In this study, Cu-coated graphene nanosheets (Cu-GNSs) were synthesized using pyrolysis. Cu-GNSs reinforced Sn2.5Ag0.7Cu0.1RE composite lead-free solders were prepared via powder metallurgy. The size, distribution, and adsorption type of Cu nanoparticles on the GNSs were studied. The relation of the Cu-GNSs content and microstructure to the physical, wettability, and mechanical properties of composite solders was discussed. The results show that Cu nanoparticles (with a mean size of 13 nm) present uniform distribution and effective chemisorptions on the GNS. Microstructural evolution of composite solders is dependent on the addition of Cu-GNSs. With increasing Cu-GNSs addition, β-Sn grains become finer and the eutectic phase proportion becomes larger, while the morphology of the eutectic phase transforms from dispersion to network-type. The improvement of the tensile strength of the composite solder can be attributed to grain refinement and load transfer. While the existence of Cu-GNSs can effectively improve the wettability and slightly change the melting point, it can also lead to the decline of elongation and electrical conductivity of the composite solder.

Description: Arctic microbial communities (i.e., protists and bacteria) are increasingly subjected to an intrusion of new species via Atlantification and an uncertain degree of ocean warming. As species differ in adaptive traits, these oceanic conditions may lead to compositional changes with functional implications for the ecosystem. In June 2021, we incubated water from the western Fram Strait at three temperatures (2 °C, 6 °C, and 9 °C), mimicking the current and potential future properties of the Arctic Ocean. Our results show that increasing the temperature to 6 °C only minorly affects the community, while an increase to 9 °C significantly lowers the diversity and shifts the composition. A higher relative abundance of large hetero- and mixotrophic protists was observed at 2 °C and 6 °C compared to a higher abundance of intermediate-sized temperate diatoms at 9 °C. The compositional differences at 9 °C led to a higher chlorophyll a:POC ratio, but the C:N ratio remained similar. Our results contradict the common assumption that smaller organisms and heterotrophs are favored under warming and strongly indicate a thermal limit between 6 °C and 9 °C for many Arctic species. Consequently, the magnitude of temperature increase is a crucial factor for microbial community reorganization and the ensuing ecological consequences in the future Arctic Ocean.

Description: Aeronautical stiffened panels composed of thin shells and beams are prone to deformation or buckling due to the combined loading, functional boundary conditions and interface forces between joined parts in the assembly processes. In this paper, a mechanical prediction model of the multi-component panel is presented to investigate the deformation propagation, which has a significant effect on the fatigue life of built-up structures. Governing equations of Kirchhoff–Love shell are established, of which displacement expressions are transformed into Fourier series expansions of several introduced potential functions by applying the Galerkin approach. This paper presents an intermediate quantity, concentrated force at the joining interface, to describe mechanical interactions between the coupled components. Based on the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, unknown intermediate quantity is calculated by solving a 3D stringer deformation equation with static boundary conditions specified on joining points. Compared with the finite element simulation and integrated model, the proposed method can substantially reduce grid number without jeopardizing the prediction accuracy. Practical experiment of the aircraft panel assembly is also performed to obtain the measured data. Maximum deviation between the experimental and predicted clearance values is 0.193 mm, which is enough to meet the requirement for predicting dimensional variations of the aircraft panel assembly.

Description: Nanofibers or nanofibrous membranes prepared by electrospinning possess many attractive properties, including excellent mechanical properties, high specific surface area and high porosity, making them attractive for sensor application, especially for the electrochemical sensors. Many nanomaterials are used as additives to improve the conductivity, sensitivity and selectivity of sensors. Based on the different modifiers of electrode materials, electrochemical sensors can be divided into enzyme sensors and non-enzyme sensors. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of the electrochemical sensors fabricated by electrospinning, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) sensors, glucose sensors and other sensors. In addition, the sensing mechanisms of various electrochemical sensors are introduced in detail. Finally, future research directions of electrochemical sensors based on electrospinning and the challenges faced by large-scale applications of electrospun electrochemical sensors are presented.

Description: Many existing satellite evapotranspiration (ET)-based drought indices have characterized regional drought condition successfully, but the relatively short time span of ET products limits their use in long-term climatological drought assessment. In this study, we assess Evaporative Drought Index (EDI) as a drought monitoring indicator over Northeast China through a retrospective comparison with drought-related indicators. After verifying its utility for detecting documented regional drought events and impacts of drought on crop production, we apply it to improve our understanding of the variation in dryness over Northeast China from 1982 to 2015. Our results illustrate that EDI is generally effective for characterizing terrestrial moisture condition and its standardized formula, namely, Standardized Evaporative Drought Index (sEDI) corresponds well with historical drought events and inter-annual grain crop yields over Northeast China. Although the calculation of sEDI does not directly incorporate precipitation and soil moisture, statistical analyses indicate sEDI can detect drought in accordance with the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), with the highest correlations found in the west part of Northeast China (R 〈 −0.7). Further analysis illustrates sEDI is more related to commonly-used drought metrics over areas with short canopy vegetation (R 〈 −0.5) than woodland (R 〈 −0.2), which suggests precipitation may not be a good representative of drought condition over areas with deep-rooted vegetation. Then, we find 56.5% of Northeast China shows an upward dry trend from 1982 to 2015, which mainly concentrates in the west part of the study area. Conversely, 14.4% of Northeast China shows a significant wetted trend and most of them locate at cropland areas, due to the improved water management. This study suggests that EDI is a feasible method to monitor spatially distributed drought condition and can provide unique drought information not reflected by rainfall deficits, which also can be used to evaluate traditional precipitation-based indicators.

Description: Given the critical roles of nitrates and sulfates in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) formation, we examined spatiotemporal associations between PM2.5 and sulfur dioxide (SO2) as well as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in China by taking advantage of the in situ observations of these three pollutants measured from the China national air quality monitoring network for the period from 2015 to 2018. Maximum covariance analysis (MCA) was applied to explore their possible coupled modes in space and time. The relative contribution of SO2 and NO2 to PM2.5 was then quantified via a statistical modeling scheme. The linear trends derived from the stratified data show that both PM2.5 and SO2 decreased significantly in northern China in terms of large values, indicating a fast reduction of high PM2.5 and SO2 loadings therein. The statistically significant coupled MCA mode between PM2.5 and SO2 indicated a possible spatiotemporal linkage between them in northern China, especially over the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region. Further statistical modeling practices revealed that the observed PM2.5 variations in northern China could be explained largely by SO2 rather than NO2 therein, given the estimated relatively high importance of SO2. In general, the evidence-based results in this study indicate a strong linkage between PM2.5 and SO2 in northern China in the past few years, which may help to better investigate the mechanisms behind severe haze pollution events in northern China.

Description: 5A06 Aluminum (Al) alloy and AZ31B magnesium (Mg) alloy with 20 mm thickness were successfully butt joined by friction stir welding. In order to control the composition of Al and Mg alloys along thickness direction, an inclined butt joint was designed in this study. The microstructure and phase identification at the interface of Al/Mg joints were examined using scanning electron microscopy with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy and Micro X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that there were two different formation mechanisms of intermetallic compounds at the interface of thick plate Al/Mg joint. The first was constitutional liquation, and eutectic structure consisting of Al12Mg17 and Mg solid solution existed at the top and upper-middle of the Mg side interface. The second was diffusion reaction, and the two sub-layers of Al12Mg17 and Al3Mg2 formed at the lower middle and bottom of the Mg side interface. In addition, the diffusion thickness values of Al12Mg17 and Al3Mg2 layers decreased gradually from the lower middle to bottom of the Mg side interface. As the position changes from the middle to the bottom near the Mg side interface, the diffusion coefficient of Al3Mg2 phase rapidly decreases from 3.14 × 10−12 m2/s to 6.9 × 10−13 m2/s and the diffusion coefficient of Al12Mg17 phase decreases from 6.8 × 10−13 m2/s to 1.5 × 10−13 m2/s.

Description: Whole-genome sequences of four EMS (ethyl methanesulfonate)-induced eggplant mutants were analyzed to identify genome-wide mutations. In total, 173.01 GB of paired-end reads were obtained for four EMS-induced mutants and (WT) wild type and 1,076,010 SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) and 183,421 indels were identified. The most common mutation type was C/G to T/A transitions followed by A/T to G/C transitions. The mean densities were one SNP per 1.3 to 2.6 Mb. The effect of mutations on gene function was annotated and only 7.2% were determined to be deleterious. KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathway analysis showed 10 and 11 genes, which were nonsynonymous mutation or frameshift deletion in 48-5 and L6-5 involved in the anthocyanin biosynthesis or flavone and flavonol biosynthesis. QRT-PCR results showed that only the Sme2.5_06210.1_g00004.1, which was annotated as UFGT (Flavonoid galactosidase transferase), expression significantly decreased in the L6-5 mutant compared with the WT. Also, the Sme2.5_06210.1_g00004.1 expression was lower in the colorless eggplant compared with colorful eggplant in the natural eggplant cultivar. These results suggest that Sme2.5_06210.1_g00004.1 may play a key role in eggplant anthocyanin synthesis.
