Description: Recent expansion of intelligent gadgets, such as smartphones and smart watches, familiarizes humans with sensing their activities. We have been developing a road accessibility evaluation system inspired by human sensing technologies. This paper introduces our methodology to estimate road accessibility from the three-axis acceleration data obtained by a smart phone attached on a wheelchair seat, such as environmental factors, e.g., curbs and gaps, which directly influence wheelchair bodies, and human factors, e.g., wheelchair users’ feelings of tiredness and strain. Our goal is to realize a system that provides the road accessibility visualization services to users by online/offline pattern matching using impersonal models, while gradually learning to improve service accuracy using new data provided by users. As the first step, this paper evaluates features acquired by the DCNN (deep convolutional neural network), which learns the state of the road surface from the data in supervised machine learning techniques. The evaluated results show that the features can capture the difference of the road surface condition in more detail than the label attached by us and are effective as the means for quantitatively expressing the road surface condition. This paper developed and evaluated a prototype system that estimated types of ground surfaces focusing on knowledge extraction and visualization.

Description: Though accelerometers for condition diagnosis of a bearing is preferably placed at the nearest position of the bearing as possible, in some plant equipment, the accelerometer is difficult to set near the diagnosed bearing, and in many cases, sensors have to be placed at a location far from the diagnosed bearing to measure signals for diagnosing bearing faults. Since, in these cases, the measured signals contain stronger noise than the signal measured near the diagnosed bearing, bearing faults are more difficultly to be detected. In order to overcome the above difficulty, this paper proposes a new fault auto-detection method by which the signals measured by an accelerometer located at a far point from the diagnosed bearing can be used to simply and accurately detect the bearing faults automatically. Firstly, the hybrid GA (the combination of genetic algorithm and tabu search) is used to automatically search and determine the optimum cutoff frequency of the high-pass filter to extract the fault signal of the abnormal bearing. Secondly, the bearing faults are precisely diagnosed by possibility theory and fuzzy inference. Finally, in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of these proposed methods, these methods were applied to bearing diagnostics using vibration signals measured at the far point of the diagnostic bearing, and the efficiency of these methods was verified by the results of automatic bearing fault diagnosis.

Description: Background Daytime sleepiness can be assessed by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), which is widely used in the field of sleep medicine as a subjective measure of a patient’s sleepiness. Also, health utility assessed by the mean Short-Form Six-Dimension (SF-6D) score, one of several preference-based utility measures, is an important measure in health care. We aimed to examine age-related differences in daytime sleepiness and health utility and their relationship in patients 5 months after cardiac surgery. Methods; This cross-sectional study assessed 51 consecutive cardiac surgery patients who were divided into a middle-aged (〈65 years, n = 29) and older-age group (≥65 years, n = 22). The mean ESS and SF-6D utility scores were measured at 5 months after cardiac surgery and compared. In addition, the relationship between ESS and SF-6D utility scores were assessed. Results; There were no significant differences between the middle-aged and older-aged groups in either the mean ESS (5.14 ± 2.96 vs. 4.05 ± 3.23, p = 0.22) or SF-6D utility (0.72 ± 0.14 vs. 0.71 ± 0.10, p = 0.76) scores. However, there was a negative correlation between both values in all of the patients after cardiac surgery (r = −0.41, p = 0.003). Conclusions; Although there were no age-related differences in the ESS and SF-6D utility values between the two groups, there was a negative correlation between these values in all patients at 5 months after cardiac surgery. This suggested that sleepiness is associated with decreased utility scores in patients at 5 months after cardiac surgery.

Description: The magnetization, electric resistivity, and magnetoresistance properties of Pd 2 Mn 1 . 4 Sn 0 . 6 Heusler alloys were investigated. The Curie temperature of the parent phase, martensitic transformation temperatures, and magnetic field dependence of the martensitic transformation temperatures were determined. The magnetoresistance was investigated from 10 to 290 K, revealing both intrinsic and extrinsic magnetoresistance properties for this alloy. A maximum of about − 3 . 5 % of intrinsic magnetoresistance under 90 kOe and of about − 30 % of extrinsic magnetoresistance under 180 kOe were obtained. Moreover, the thermal transformation arrest phenomenon was confirmed in the Pd 2 Mn 1 . 4 Sn 0 . 6 alloy, and an abnormal heating-induced martensitic transformation (HIMT) behavior was observed.

Description: A dense cabled observation network, called the seafloor observation network for earthquakes and tsunami along the Japan Trench (S-net), was installed in Japan. This study aimed to develop a near-real time tsunami source estimation technique using the ocean bottom pressure data observed at those sensors in S-net. Synthetic pressure waveforms at those sensors were computed for 64 earthquake tsunami scenarios with magnitude ranging between M8.0 and M8.8. The pressure waveforms within a time window of 500 s after an earthquake were classified into three types. Type 1 has the following pressure waveform characteristic: the pressure decreases and remains low; sensors exhibiting waveforms associated with Type 1 are located inside a co-seismic uplift area. The pressure waveform characteristic of Type 2 is that one up-pulse of a wave is within the time window; sensors exhibiting waveforms associated with Type 2 are located at the edge of the co-seismic uplift area. The other pressure waveforms are classified as Type 3. Subsequently, we developed a method to estimate the uplift area using those three classifications of pressure waveforms at sensors in S-net and a method to estimate earthquake magnitude from the estimated uplift area using a regression line. We systematically applied those methods for two cases of previous large earthquakes: the 1952 Tokachi-oki earthquake (Mw8.2) and the 1968 Tokachi-oki earthquake (Mw8.1). The locations of the large computed uplift areas of the earthquakes were well defined by the estimated ones. The estimated magnitudes of the 1952 and 1968 Tokachi-oki earthquakes from the estimated uplift area were 8.2 and 7.9, respectively; they are almost consistent with the moment magnitudes derived from the source models. Those results indicate that the tsunami source estimation method developed in this study can be used for near-real time tsunami forecasts.

Description: A simplified substitute for heart rate (HR) at the anaerobic threshold (AT), i.e., resting HR plus 30 beats per minute or a percentage of predicted maximum HR, is used as a way to determine exercise intensity without cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) data. However, difficulties arise when using this method in subacute myocardial infarction (MI) patients undergoing beta-blocker therapy. This study compared the effects of αβ-blocker and β1-blocker treatment to clarify how different beta blockers affect HR response during incremental exercise. MI patients were divided into αβ-blocker (n = 67), β1-blocker (n = 17), and no-β-blocker (n = 47) groups. All patients underwent CPX one month after MI onset. The metabolic chronotropic relationship (MCR) was calculated as an indicator of HR response from the ratio of estimated HR to measured HR at AT (MCR-AT) and peak exercise (MCR-peak). MCR-AT and MCR-peak were significantly higher in the αβ-blocker group than in the β1-blocker group (p 〈 0.001, respectively). Multiple regression analysis revealed that β1-blocker but not αβ-blocker treatment significantly predicted lower MCR-AT and MCR-peak (β = −0.432, p 〈 0.001; β = −0.473, p 〈 0.001, respectively). Based on these results, when using the simplified method, exercise intensity should be prescribed according to the type of beta blocker used.

Description: We analyzed the relationships between forgetfulness and social participation, social contact, and social support by municipality to develop community diagnosing indicators. The analysis subjects included 105 municipalities that agreed to provide data for the 2013 Survey of Needs in Spheres of Daily Life in Japan (n = 338,659 people). Forgetfulness as a risk factor for dementia was used as the dependent variable. The variables of social environment factors were (1) social participation, (2) social contact, and (3) social support. The ratio of people responding that they experienced forgetfulness differed among municipalities, with a mean of 19.0% (7.1–35.6%). Higher levels of social participation, social contact, and social support were associated with lower levels of forgetfulness, even after adjusting for age and regional variables. The results of the present study suggest that it is appropriate to use forgetfulness and social participation at least a few times a year in any social activity as community diagnosing indicators. Municipalities could encourage their inhabitants to participate by developing and providing engaging social activities.

Description: Aluminum-phosphate-sulfates (APS) of the alunite supergroup occur in igneous rocks within zones of advanced argillic and silicic alteration in porphyry and epithermal ore environments. In this study we report on the presence of woodhouseite-rich APS in ash from the 27 September 2014 hydrothermal eruption of Ontake volcano. Scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS) and field emission (FE)-SEM-EDS observations show two types of occurrence of woodhouseite: (a) as cores within chemically zoned alunite-APS crystals (Zoned-alunite-woodhouseite-APS), and (b) as a coherent single-phase mineral in micro-veinlets intergrown with similar micro-veinlets of silica minerals (Micro-wormy-vein woodhouseite-APS). The genetic environment of APS minerals at Ontake volcano is that of a highly acidic hydrothermal system existing beneath the volcano summit, formed by condensation in magmatic steam and/or ground waters of sulfur-rich magmatic volatiles exsolved from the magma chamber beneath Mt. Ontake. Under these conditions, an advanced argillic alteration assemblage forms, which is composed of silica, pyrophyllite, alunite and kaolinite/dickite, plus APS, among other minerals. The discovery of woodhouseite in the volcanic ash of the Ontake 2014 hydrothermal eruption represents the first reported presence of APS within an active volcano. Other volcanoes in Japan and elsewhere with similar phreatic eruptions ejecting altered ash fragments will likely contain APS minerals derived from magmatic-hydrothermal systems within the subvolcanic environment. The presence of APS minerals within the advanced argillic zone below the summit vent of Ontake volcano, together with the prior documentation of phyllic and potassically altered ash fragments, provides evidence for the existence within an active volcano in Japan of an alteration column comparable to that of porphyry copper systems globally.

Description: Silsesquioxane (SQ) derivatives possessing intramolecular H2C = CH- groups and Si-H groups were designed as precursors for ternary silicon oxycarbide (SiOC). By using R-Si(OMe)3, H-Si(OEt)3 and (H-Si(Me)2)2O as starting compounds, SQ derivatives of VH-SQ (R = vinyl) and St-H-SQ (R = stylyl) were successfully synthesized through the conventional sol-gel route. Simultaneous thermogravimetric and mass spectroscopic analyses up to 1000 °C revealed that in situ cross-linking via hydrosilylation and demethanation of VH-SQ suppressed the evolution of gaseous hydrocarbon species to afford amorphous SiOC having a composition close to the desired stoichiometric SiO2(1−x)Cx (x = ca. 0.3) with a high yield. The effect of carbon content on the phase separation and crystallization of the SQ-derived amorphous SiOC was studied by several spectroscopic analyses and TEM observation. The results were discussed aiming to develop a novel polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) route for in situ formation of binary β-SiC-amorphous SiO2 nanocomposites with enhanced thermal and mechanical stability.

Description: High-speed recognition of the shape of a target object is indispensable for robots to perform various kinds of dexterous tasks in real time. In this paper, we propose a high-speed 3-D sensing system with active target-tracking. The system consists of a high-speed camera head and a high-speed projector, which are mounted on a two-axis active vision system. By measuring a projected coded pattern, 3-D measurement at a rate of 500 fps was achieved. The measurement range was increased as a result of the active tracking, and the shape of the target was accurately observed even when it moved quickly. In addition, to obtain the position and orientation of the target, 500 fps real-time model matching was achieved.
