    Description: With the development of remote sensing techniques and the increasing need for soil contamination monitoring, we estimated soil heavy metal zinc (Zn) content using hyperspectral imaging. Geographically weighted regression (GWR), an extension of the ordinary least squares (OLS) regression framework, was proposed. By estimating a set of parameters for any number of locations in a study area, GWR can probe the spatial heterogeneity in data relationships, whereas the regression parameters of an OLS model are global and aspatially-varied. The objectives of this study were: (1) To find the possible relationships between hyperspectral data and soil Zn content, and (2) to investigate the existence of their spatial heterogeneity. In this study, 67 soil samples collected from Pingtan Island, Fujian Province, China, were used to conduct laboratory hyperspectral modeling for soil Zn content estimation. Four transformations of square root, logarithm, reciprocal of logarithm, and reciprocal, as well as the fractional-order differential operations were applied to increase the amount of reflectance data in which the effective variables for modeling might be involved, and to enhance the spectral characteristics of soil Zn content. To find sensitive variables and to remove redundancy and multicollinearity in the spectra, a data sifting process was applied by selecting wavelengths with local maximum in the absolute values of the correlation coefficients with Zn content in one type of spectral data and by employing Variance Inflation Factors. Since a modeling sample size of 46 is insufficient to construct the appropriate OLS and GWR models, four methods are proposed using all 67 samples to choose explanatory variables. A random process to select 57 samples for modeling and 10 samples for validation was applied to assess model performance, in which the mean verification R2 (Rv2) was used as an indicator. The results show that GWR stepwise regression is the most effective method to select better variables. As the mean Rv2 converges toward the OLS value when the bandwidth of the GWR model increases, the four variables selected by the GWR stepwise regression were used to establish the representative OLS and GWR models. The representative OLS model has the best mean verification effect among all studied models, which had a mean Rv2 value that is 44.6% higher than the OLS model constructed using OLS stepwise regression.

    Description: Built heritage has been documented by reality-based modeling for geometric description and by ontology for knowledge management. The current challenge still involves the extraction of geometric primitives and the establishment of their connection to heterogeneous knowledge. As a recently developed 3D information modeling environment, building information modeling (BIM) entails both graphical and non-graphical aspects of the entire building, which has been increasingly applied to heritage documentation and generates a new issue of heritage/historic BIM (HBIM). However, HBIM needs to additionally deal with the heterogeneity of geometric shape and semantic knowledge of the heritage object. This paper developed a new mesh-to-HBIM modeling workflow and an integrated BIM management system to connect HBIM elements and historical knowledge. Using the St-Pierre-le-Jeune Church, Strasbourg, France as a case study, this project employs Autodesk Revit as a BIM environment and Dynamo, a built-in visual programming tool of Revit, to extend the new HBIM functions. The mesh-to-HBIM process segments the surface mesh, thickens the triangle mesh to 3D volume, and transfers the primitives to BIM elements. The obtained HBIM is then converted to the ontology model to enrich the heterogeneous knowledge. Finally, HBIM geometric elements and ontology semantic knowledge is joined in a unified BIM environment. By extending the capability of the BIM platform, the HBIM modeling process can be conducted in a time-saving way, and the obtained HBIM is a semantic model with object-oriented knowledge.

    Description: To better understand the ionospheric morphology response to lithospheric activities, we study the global location preference of the positive and negative total electron content (TEC) anomalies persisting continuously for longer than 24 h at middle and low latitudes (within ±60° N geomagnetic latitudes). The TEC is obtained from the global ionospheric map (GIM) of Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE) under the geomagnetic quiet condition of Kp ≤ 3o during the period of 2005 to 2018. There are a few (less than 4%) TEC anomalies that can persist over 24 h. The conjugate phenomenon is most significant in the eastern Asia to Australia longitudinal sector. The result shows the persistence of the positive TEC anomaly along the ring of fire on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean. The high persistence of the TEC anomalies at midlatitudes suggests that thermospheric neutral wind contributes to the anomaly formation.

    Description: China is vulnerable to climate change. Developing the ability to assess social vulnerability and inequality amid climate change will be imperative to ensure that adjustment policies can be developed for various groups and build resilient livelihoods in China. This paper examines social vulnerability and inequality through a joint analysis of urban agglomerations. Based on a conceptual framework of social vulnerability from a network perspective, the social vulnerability index of individual cities is quantified with a projection pursuit cluster model, the social vulnerability index of cities in urban networks is calculated with the Baidu Index, and an inequality analysis is measured by the Theil index. We pilot this study in three urban agglomerations: the Jing-Jin-Ji region, the Yangtze River Delta region, and the Pearl River Delta. Our results show the following: (1) The indicator of “GDP” with the weight value reaching 0.42 has the most influence on social vulnerability. Three indicators, which are fully described herein—“Children”, “Illiterate”, and “Higher education graduated”—contribute much to social vulnerability index with values between 0.3 and 0.4. These three indicators should receive more attention in integrated risk management. (2) In the Jing-Jin-Ji region, the Theil indexes of two indicators, “Ethnic minorities” and “Green”, exceed 0.65 and have the most influence on inequality. In the Yangtze River Delta, three indicators of “Poor”, “GDP”, and “Green” contribute much to inequality. In the Pearl River Delta, the inequalities of “Green”, “Houses with no tap water” and “Higher education graduated” are high. These indicators give advance warning of potential problems, so adjustment is recommended for reducing inequality. (3) Though the connectivity structure of the Yangtze River Delta is more complicated and stronger than that of the other two agglomerations, its inequality of connectivity is higher than the others. (4) Connectivity is key for reducing social vulnerability, on the one hand, but can result in more inequality of social vulnerability, on the other hand. Therefore, it’s crucial for government to attach more significance and provide more support to cities with a higher social vulnerability index.

    Description: Studies on health care demand have indicated high levels of public satisfaction with Taiwan’s National Health Insurance (NHI). However, the global budget allocation mechanism (GBAM) used by NHI has led to various adjustments in the providers’ way of practice, quality of care, utilization of care, and health expenditure. Studies focusing on the satisfaction of providers with health care supply, however, remain limited. We therefore explored the provider’s perceived impact of the NHI allocation plan. A cross-sectional data of 299 health professionals was collected at Taipei Medical University Hospitals in April 2012. Perceptions and attitudes were assessed using a validated 5-point Likert-type questionnaire before using a structural equation modeling technique to explore the complex interrelationships of the NHI’s perceived impact. The causal path relationships between the latent variables ‘characteristics of NHI’s allocation plan’ and ‘perceived positive effect’ (β = 0.39), ‘perceived positive effect’ and ‘satisfaction of health professionals’ (β = 0.53), and between ‘characteristics of NHI’s allocation plan’ and ‘satisfaction of health professionals’ (β = 0.30) were positively associated; while the path relationships between the latent variables ‘perceived negative effect’ and ‘satisfaction of health professionals’ (β = −0.27) and ‘characteristics of NHI’s allocation plan’ and ‘attitude toward allocation criteria’ (β = −0.22) were negatively associated. These results indicate that providers perceived a positive impact of the NHI allocation strategy. The NHI allocation plan is an important decision-making tool among policy makers since it helps optimize outcomes. Research based on its impact at both horizontal and vertical levels on the supply side may be useful towards understanding Taiwan’s GBAM. Policy-makers should therefore consider understanding the impact of GBAM at both the demand and supply side in adjusting allocation criteria.

    Description: The interaction between alloy melt and mold facecoats is the main factor affecting the surface quality of investment casting nickel-based superalloys. An investigation was undertaken to develop suitable refractories as facecoat materials for the directionally solidified blades of DZ22B nickel-based superalloys in order to avoid a sand-burning defect. The wettability and interface reactions between alloy melt and various facecoats were studied by using a sessile drop experiment and the real investment casting method, respectively. The results show that by adding Cr2O3 powder with the amounts of 2 wt.%, 5 wt.% and 10 wt.% in the fused alumina-based facecoats, the wetting angles between the alloy melt and facecoats decreased from 105.40° to 100.37°, 99.96° and 98.11°, respectively, while the sand-burning defect on the casting blade surfaces still formed during the process of directional solidification. However, by adding h-BN powder in the fused alumina-based facecoats, the wetting angles between the alloy melt and facecoats dramatically increased, the sand-burning defect on the casting blade surfaces was effectively inhibited and a metallic luster on the directionally solidified blades could be obviously observed. In this study, the suitable composition of mold facecoats for the investment casting of blades is 2 wt.% h-BN added fused alumina.

    Description: Land use types have been strongly modified across mountainous areas. This has substantially altered the patterns and processes of ecosystems and the components of ecosystem services (ESs), and could in turn impact the sustainable development. In the mountainous Mentougou district of Beijing, we explored the changes in land use type (cropland, orchard, forested land, scrubland, grassland, bare land, water bodies, wasteland and built-up land), landscape patterns and ESs as well as their interactions during the past 30 years (1985–2014). The ESs included water yield (WY), carbon stocks (CS) and soil retention rate (SR). The results showed that 23.65% of the land use changed and the wasteland decreased by 80.87%. As for ESs, WY decreased by 47.32% since the year 2000, probably due to the increases in temperature and evapotranspiration. Although the decrease of forested land led to the decrease of CS, the increase of vegetation coverage improved SR. CS decreased by 0.99%from 1990 to 2014, and SR increased by 1.38% from 1985 to 2014. Landscape patterns became fragmented and dispersed, and MPS and CS, SHDI and SR were significantly negatively correlated. IJI and CS was positively correlated. This indicated that landscape patterns were highly correlated with ESs. In order to maintain the sustainable development of ESs, we should not only plan land use types, but also consider the rationality of landscape patterns.

    Description: Acinetobacter baumannii is an important health care-associated bacterium and a common multidrug-resistant pathogen. The use of antibiotics in the husbandry industry has raised concerns about drug-resistant A. baumannii strains, which may affect humans. This study aimed to investigate the seasonal distribution of A. baumannii in aquatic environments near areas of livestock farming. The geographic distribution, antibiotic resistance characteristic, and DNA fingerprinting genotype of A. baumannii were also studied. The results showed that environmental A. baumannii was prevalent during the summer and autumn. The hotspots for A. baumannii were found at the sampling sites of livestock wastewater channels (21.4%; 3/14) and the tributaries adjacent to livestock farms (15.4%; 2/13). The prevalence of A. baumannii at these locations was significantly higher than those adjacent to the Puzi River. Multidrug-resistant strain of A. baumannii was not found in this study, with only one strain (5%; 1/20) being resistant to tetracycline. Of the isolates that were obtained, 10% (2/20) and 20% (4/20) were found to be intermediately resistant to tetracycline and sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim, respectively. The genotyping patterns and clustering analysis indicated that enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) differentiated A. baumannii strains effectively. There were two major clusters that could then be subtyped into 20 A. baumannii strains with 15 profiles. The A. baumannii strains that were isolated from upstream of the Puzi River and livestock wastewater channels were composed of Cluster I. Cluster II only contained isolates from downstream of the Puzi River area. Furthermore, isolates from adjacent sites were shown to have identical profiles (100%). These results suggest that A. baumannii may have spread through free-flowing water in this study. Therefore, we propose that livestock wastewater is one of the sources that contribute to A. baumannii pollution in water bodies. In summary, continuous monitoring of antibiotic pollution in livestock wastewater is required.

    Description: : In this paper, the time-varying volatility feedback of nine series of energy prices is researched by employing the time-varying parameter stochastic volatility in mean (TVP-SVM) model. The major findings and conclusions can be grouped as follows: Significant differences exist in the time-varying volatility feedback among the nine major energy productions. Specifically, crude oil and diesel’s price volatility has a remarkable positive time-varying effect on their returns. Yet the returns, for natural gas and most petroleum products are negatively affected by their price volatility over time. Furthermore, obvious structural break features exist in the time-varying volatility feedback of energy prices, which coincide with the breakpoints in the energy volatility. This indicates that some factors such as major global economic and geopolitical events that cause the sudden structural breaks in the energy volatility may also affect the volatility feedback of the energy price. Moreover, the volatility feedback in energy price will become weak and even have no impact on energy returns in some special periods when the energy price volatility is extremely high.
