    Description: The frequency of harmful algal blooms (HABs) has increased in China in recent years. Information about harmful dinoflagellates and paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) is still limited in China, especially in the Beibu Gulf, where PSTs in shellfish have exceeded food safety guidelines on multiple occasions. To explore the nature of the threat from PSTs in the region, eight Alexandrium strains were isolated from waters of the Beibu Gulf and examined using phylogenetic analyses of large subunit (LSU) rDNA, small subunit (SSU) rDNA, and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. Their toxin composition profiles were also determined using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). All eight strains clustered in the phylogenetic tree with A. pseudogonyaulax, A. affine, and A. tamiyavanichii from other locations, forming three well-resolved groups. The intraspecific genetic distances of the three Alexandrium species were significantly smaller than interspecific genetic distances for Alexandrium species. Beibu Gulf isolates were therefore classified as A. pseudogonyaulax, A. affine, and A. tamiyavanichii. No PSTs were identified in A. pseudogonyaulax, but low levels of gonyautoxins (GTXs) 1 to 5, and saxitoxin (STX) were detected in A. tamiyavanichii (a total of 4.60 fmol/cell). The extremely low level of toxicity is inconsistent with PST detection above regulatory levels on multiple occasions within the Beibu Gulf, suggesting that higher toxicity strains may occur in those waters, but were unsampled. Other explanations including biotransformation of PSTs in shellfish and the presence of other PST-producing algae are also suggested. Understanding the toxicity and phylogeny of Alexandrium species provides foundational data for the protection of public health in the Beibu Gulf region and the mitigation of HAB events.

    Description: This paper presents a novel front-illuminated InAlAs/InGaAs separate absorption, grading, field-control and multiplication (SAGFM) avalanche photodiodes (APDs) with a mesa-structure for high speed response. The electric fields in the InAlAs-multiplication layer and InGaAs-absorption layer enable high multiplication gain and high-speed response thanks to the thickness and concentration of the field-control and multiplication layers. A mesa active region of 45 micrometers was defined using a bromine-based isotropic wet etching solution. The side walls of the mesa were subjected to sulfur treatment before being coated with a thick polyimide layer to reduce current leakage, while lowering capacitance and increasing response speeds. The breakdown voltage (VBR) of the proposed SAGFM APDs was approximately 32 V. Under reverse bias of 0.9 VBR at room temperature, the proposed device achieved dark current of 31.4 nA, capacitance of 0.19 pF and multiplication gain of 9.8. The 3-dB frequency response was 8.97 GHz and the gain-bandwidth product was 88 GHz. A rise time of 42.0 ps was derived from eye-diagrams at 0.9 VBR. There was notable absence of intersymbol-interference and the signals remained error-free at data-rates of up to 12.5 Gbps.

    Description: The MEF2 (myocyte enhancer factor 2) family belongs to the MADS-box superfamily of eukaryotic transcription factors. The vertebrate genes compose four distinct subfamilies designated MEF2A, -B, -C, and -D. There are multiple mef2 genes in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio). So far, the embryonic expression patterns of these genes and the evolution of fish mef2 genes have been barely investigated. In this study, we completed the coding information of C. carpio mef2ca2 and mef2d1 genes via gene cloning and presented two mosaic mef2 sequences as evidence for recombination. We also analyzed the phylogenetic relationship and conserved synteny of mef2 genes and proposed a new evolutionary scenario. In our version, MEF2B and the other three vertebrate subfamilies were generated in parallel from the single last ancestor via two rounds of whole genome duplication events that occurred at the dawn of vertebrates. Moreover, we examined the expression patterns of C. carpio mef2 genes during embryogenesis, by using whole-mount in situ hybridization, and found the notochord to be a new expression site for these genes except for mef2ca1&2. Our results thus provide new insights into the evolution and expression of mef2 genes.

    Description: Anomaly detection of network traffic flows is a non-trivial problem in the field of network security due to the complexity of network traffic. However, most machine learning-based detection methods focus on network anomaly detection but ignore the user anomaly behavior detection. In real scenarios, the anomaly network behavior may harm the user interests. In this paper, we propose an anomaly detection model based on time-decay closed frequent patterns to address this problem. The model mines closed frequent patterns from the network traffic of each user and uses a time-decay factor to distinguish the weight of current and historical network traffic. Because of the dynamic nature of user network behavior, a detection model update strategy is provided in the anomaly detection framework. Additionally, the closed frequent patterns can provide interpretable explanations for anomalies. Experimental results show that the proposed method can detect user behavior anomaly, and the network anomaly detection performance achieved by the proposed method is similar to the state-of-the-art methods and significantly better than the baseline methods.

    Description: Research Highlights: This study was the first to use metabolomics techniques to investigate seed germination in poplar, a model woody plant. Our results lay a foundation for uncovering changes in metabolite levels during woody plant seed germination and for understanding the underlying mechanism. Background and Objectives: Poplar is a model woody plant. Because poplar can be easily propagated asexually, the molecular mechanism of poplar seed germination has not been well studied. However, long-term asexual reproduction of poplar leads to seedlings with weak resistance, high vulnerability to degradation, and reduced growth potential. Materials and Methods: The non-targeted metabolomics technique was used to analyze changing trends in metabolite contents during the poplar seed germination process. Results: We found that the number of differential metabolites increased as seed germination progressed. Metabolic pathway analysis of differential metabolites revealed that galactose metabolism and alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism were significantly enriched during all germination periods. MapMan-based visual analysis of metabolic pathways of differential metabolites indicated that glutamine, glutamic acid, phenylalanine, arginine, and asparagine contents increased with germination time, with most metabolites related to glucose metabolism following similar trends. Contents of most metabolites related to the tricarboxylic acid cycle exhibited a fluctuating pattern. Conclusions: This study has revealed the major changes taking place in primary metabolite contents during poplar seed germination and has laid the foundation for elucidation of the molecular mechanism of poplar seed germination.

    Description: Quasicrystal alloys have a wide application prospect because of excellent performances and characteristics; meanwhile, magnesium alloys are known as green engineering materials because of their high specific strength and light weight. Therefore, the study of Mg-Zn-Gd quasicrystal alloys is of great significance for the development of new materials. In this paper, Mg(70-x)Zn30Gdx(x=3,4,5) alloys were prepared by a conventional casting method and the morphologies and properties of these alloys were studied. There was a new symmetrical rod phase found in the Mg66Zn30Gd4 alloy and the symmetrical rod phase was identified as a ternary phase by mapping scanning and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. The Zn/Gd ratio of the symmetrical rod phase was found to be 4.8 and the TEM images obtained were different from the typical diffraction spots patterns of quasicrystalline, which means it is unlikely to be quasicrystalline. With different melt holding time, the symmetrical rod phase evolved gradually over time from a lamellar eutectic structure; differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), heat treatment, and microhardness tests showed that the melting temperature of the rod phase was 453 °C and that its thermal stability and microhardness are better than quasicrystalline. Hence, the symmetrical rod phase is a new kind of complex metallic alloy phase whose composition and properties are close to those of quasicrystals but is not quasicrystalline.

    Description: Magnesium alloys act as ideal biomedical materials with good biocompatibility. In this paper, the extruded biomedical Mg-6Zn-0.5Nd-0.5/0.8Ca alloys were prepared and their microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion properties were investigated. The results showed that the surfaces of Mg-6Zn-0.5Nd-0.5/0.8Ca alloys extruded at medium temperature were smooth and compact without cracks. The tensile strength and elongation of Mg-6Zn-0.5Nd-0.5/0.8Ca alloys were 222.5 MPa and 20.2%, and 287.2 MPa and 18.4%, respectively. A large number of dislocations were generated in the grains and on grain boundaries after the extrusion. The alloy was immersed in simulating body fluid (SBF) for the weightlessness corrosion, and the corrosion products were analyzed by FTIR, SEM equipped with EDS. It was found that the corrosion rate of Mg-6Zn-0.5Nd-0.5Ca and Mg-6Zn-0.5Nd-0.8Ca alloy were 0.82 and 2.98 mm/a, respectively. Furthermore, the compact layer was formed on the surface of the alloy, which can effectively hinder the permeation of Cl− and significantly improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys.

    Description: Laser rangefinders (LRFs) are widely used in autonomous systems for indoor positioning and mobile mapping through the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) approach. The extrinsic parameters of multiple LRFs need to be determined, and they are one of the key factors impacting system performance. This study presents an extrinsic calibration method of multiple LRFs that requires neither extra calibration sensors nor special artificial reference landmarks. Instead, it uses a naturally existing cuboid-shaped corridor as the calibration reference, and it hence needs no additional cost. The present method takes advantage of two types of geometric constraints for the calibration, which can be found in a common cuboid-shaped corridor. First, the corresponding point cloud is scanned by the set of LRFs. Second, the lines that are scanned on the corridor surfaces are extracted from the point cloud. Then, the lines within the same surface and the lines within two adjacent surfaces satisfy the coplanarity constraint and the orthogonality constraint, respectively. As such, the calibration problem is converted into a nonlinear optimization problem with the constraints. Simulation experiments and experiments based on real data verified the feasibility and stability of the proposed method.

    Description: Long-term precipitation estimates with both finer spatial resolution and better quality are vital and highly needed in various related fields. Numerous downscaling algorithms have been investigated based on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-Satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA), to obtain precipitation data with finer resolution (~1 km). However, this research was restricted by the time span of the TMPA dataset, as the starting time of TMPA was 1998. In this study, a new methodological framework incorporating wavelet coherence and Cubist was proposed to retrospectively obtain downscaled precipitation estimates (DS) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), based on TMPA and ground observations, in 1990s. The correlations and similarities of precipitation patterns between the target years, from 1990 to 1999, and reference years, from 2000 to 2013, were firstly determined using wavelet coherence based on ground observations. Following this, the TMPA data in the reference years were regarded as the reference in the corresponding target years, which were adopted to be downscaled using Cubist models and land surface variables, to obtain the DS in the target years. We found that the DS showed continuous trends, which corresponded well with the ground observations. Additionally, the performances of the DS were better than those of the Climate Hazards group Infrared Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS) data over the TP. Therefore, this methodological framework has great potential for obtaining precipitation estimates for the period of the 1990s for which TMPA data is inaccessible.

    Description: Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), the foundation of smart grids, can be used to provide numerous intelligent power applications and services based on the data acquired from AMI. Effective and efficient communication performance between widely-spread smart meters and Data Concentrator Units (DCUs) is one of the most important issues for the successful deployment and operation of AMI and needs to be further investigated. This paper proposes an effective Communication Performance Index (CPI) to assess and supervise the communication performance of each smart meter. Some communication quality measurements that can be easily acquired from a smart meter such as reading success rate and response time are used to design the proposed CPI. Fuzzy logic is adopted to combine these measurements to calculate the proposed CPI. The CPIs for communication paths, DCUs and whole AMI can then be derived from meter CPIs. Simulation and experimental results for small-scale AMIs demonstrate the validity of the proposed CPI. Through the calculated CPIs, the communication performance and stability for AMI can be effectively assessed and supervised.
