    Description: (1) Background: This study aimed to determine the relevance between stages of metabolic syndrome (MS) progression and the incidence of gastric cancer utilizing a big data cohort for the national health checkup. (2) Methods: There were 7,785,098 study subjects, and three stages of metabolic syndrome were categorized using the health checkup results from 2009. Incidence of gastric cancer was traced and observed from the date of the health insurance benefit claim in 2009 until 31 December, 2016, and Cox hazard-proportional regression was performed to determine the risk of gastric cancer incidence based on the stage of progression for metabolic syndrome. (3) Results: Hazard ratio (HR) incidence rate for the MS group was 2.31 times higher than the normal group (95% CI 2.22–2.40) after adjustment (Model 4). The HR incidence rate of gastric cancer for the pre-MS group was 1.08 times higher (95% CI 1.04–1.12) than the normal group, while the HR incidence rate of gastric cancer for the MS group was 1.26 times higher (95% CI 1.2–1.32). (4) Conclusions: Causal relevance observed in this study between metabolic syndrome and incidence of gastric cancer was high. Promotion and education for active responses in the general population and establishment of appropriate metabolic syndrome management systems to prevent gastric cancer are needed.

    Description: The purpose of this study was to examine the associations of vitamin D status with athletic performance and blood-borne markers in adolescent athletes. This cross-sectional study included forty-seven Taekwondo athletes, aged 15–18 years old. Athletic performance was assessed using maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), Wingate anaerobic power test, vertical jump, agility T-test, lower limb muscle strength, and fatigue resistance. Blood samples were collected to assess serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], free-testosterone, cortisol, creatine kinase, and urea. One-way ANOVAs were applied using Bonferroni adjusted alpha levels, which was 0.02 (i.e., 0.05/3). Multiple linear regressions analyses as well as Pearson and partial correlation analyses were used to examine the relationship among 25(OH)D concentration, athletic performance, and blood-borne markers. The participants 25(OH)D concentration were ranged from 16 to 73.25 nmol/L, indicating that 74.5% of the adolescent athletes have vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. The vitamin D status did not show any significant effects on the performance factors or blood-borne markers. Serum 25(OH)D concentration was positively correlated with mean power output (r = 0.359, p 〈 0.05) and relative mean power output (r = 0.325, p 〈 0.05) after adjusting for bone age, height, weight, training experience, lean body mass, and fat mass. However, 25(OH)D concentration was not associated with other performance-related factors and blood-borne markers. In addition, multiple linear regressions analyses revealed that serum 25(OH)D concentration were not significant predictors of athletic performance in adolescent athletes. In conclusion, vitamin D status is weakly correlated with anaerobic capacity; moreover, the underlying mechanisms of how vitamin D influence anaerobic performance is unclear in the present study. Nevertheless, the importance of vitamin D on health benefits should not be underestimated, especially during growth periods.

    Description: The pattern of micro-electricity production of simple two-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFC) was monitored in this study. Piggery wastewater and anaerobic sludge served as fuel and inocula for the MFC, respectively. The output power, including voltage and current generation, of triplicate MFCs was measured using an on-line monitoring system. The maximum voltage obtained among the triplicates was 0.663 V. We also found that removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in the piggery wastewater was 94.99 and 98.63%, respectively. Moreover, analytical results of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) demonstrated that the output current comprised alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) components, ranging from mA to μA.

    Description: To minimize conventional total-phosphorus (TP) analysis systems, TP pretreatment microfluidic chip is proposed and characterized in this paper. Phosphorus (P) is one of the most important elements in ecosystem but it causes the eutrophication due to its overdose. TP analysis systems are increasingly receiving attention as a means to prevent eutrophication. Even though conventional TP analysis systems have high accuracy and sensitivity, they are not frequently utilized outside the laboratory because of their bulky size, complicated pretreatment processes, long response times, and high cost. Thus, there is a growing need to develop portable TP analysis systems. The microfluidic chip in this study is proposed with the aim of simplifying and minimizing TP analysis by replacing the conventional pretreatment process with a new method employing a thermally enhanced photocatalytic reaction that can be applied directly to a microfluidic chip of small size. The fabricated TP pretreatment microfluidic chip with thermally enhanced photocatalyst (TiO2) was optimized compared to the conventional pretreatment equipment (autoclave). The optimum pretreatment conditions using the proposed chip were pretreatment time of 10 min and temperature of 75 °C. The optimized pretreatment process using the proposed microfluidic chip showed similar performance to the conventional pretreatment method, even with shorter pretreatment time. The shorter pretreatment time and small size are advantages that enable the TP analysis system to be minimized. Therefore, the proposed TP pretreatment microfluidic chip based on thermally enhanced photocatalytic reaction in this study will be utilized to develop a portable TP analysis system.

    Description: To develop highly sensitive flexible pressure sensors, the mechanical and piezoresistive properties of conductive thermoplastic materials produced via additive manufacturing technology were investigated. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed in thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), which is flexible and pliable, were used to form filaments. Specimens of the MWCNT/TPU composite with various MWCNT concentrations were printed using fused deposition modelling. Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted, while the mechanical and piezoresistive properties of the MWCNT/TPU composites were measured. To predict the piezoresistive behaviour of the composites, a microscale 3D resistance network model was developed. In addition, a continuum piezoresistive model was proposed for large-scale simulations.

    Description: This paper presents the development and evaluation of fall-impact protection pants for elderly women using additive manufacturing. The protective pants were designed incorporating a protective pad in the hip area to reduce the impact of falls on the human body. The protective pad is a 3D mesh structure with a curved surface to fit the human body. Pads printed with flexible thermoplastic polyurethane were combined with foam to create the final pad. The impact-absorbing performance of the pad was verified through physical impact experiments. When dropping a bowling ball onto the protective pad from heights of 15, 20, and 25 cm, the protective pad was found to reduce the impact force by more than 82% in all cases. The impact force was less than the average fracture threshold of 3472 N. A subject group and an expert group evaluated the appearance, pad characteristics, motion functionality, and the wearability of the protection pants. Despite the insertion of a pad, the pants appeared natural and had a good fit. The pads were evaluated as being well-designed in terms of their position, shape, area, thickness, weight, flexibility, ease of insertion, and ease of use. Users were comfortable performing various motions when wearing the designed protective clothing. Therefore, this work can be considered to have developed protective clothing that provides satisfactory impact-protection performance and comfort thereby advancing the possibility of applying additive manufacturing to the creation of functional garments.

    Description: Hazardous organisms may thrive on surfaces that are often exposed to human contact, including children’s library books. In this study, swab samples were taken from 42 children’s books collected from four public libraries in Texas and California. Samples were then cultivated in brain–heart infusion (BHI) medium and then in Luria broth (LB) medium containing either ampicillin or kanamycin. All 42 samples (100%) were positive for bacterial growth in normal BHI medium. Furthermore, 35 samples (83.3%) and 20 samples (47.6%) in total were positive in LB medium containing ampicillin or kanamycin, respectively. Bacterial populations were then identified in samples using an Orbitrap Fusion™ Tribrid ™ mass spectrometer, a state-of-the-art proteomic analysis tool. Identified bacterial species grown in ampicillin included Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Serratia, Streptococcus, Escherichia, Salmonella, and Enterococcus. In contrast, identified bacteria grown in kanamycin included Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, and Bacillus. The presences of pathogenic bacteria species were also confirmed. The results of this study warrant follow up studies to assess the potential health risks of identified pathogens. This study demonstrates the utility of proteomics in identifying environmental pathogenic bacteria for specific public health risk evaluations.

    Description: Physicians experience high stress and have much responsibility during a night shift, which contributes to increased sympathetic activity, the risk factor for renal disease. The risk for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in physicians is still unclear. Therefore, we conducted a nationwide population-based cohort study to clarify this issue. Using Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified 30,268 physicians and 60,536 individuals from the general population matched with a ratio of 1:2 by age and sex. All participants who had ESRD before 2006 and residents were excluded. ESRD risk between physicians and the general population and among physician subgroups was compared by following up their medical histories until 2012. We also compared the treatments between both cohorts with ESRD. Physicians had a lower ESRD risk than the general population (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 0.5; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.4–0.7), particularly in the middle-age subgroup (35–64 years) (AOR: 0.4; 95% CI: 0.3–0.7); however, there was no difference in the older age subgroup (≥65 years) (AOR: 1.0; 95% CI: 0.6–1.7). More physicians received peritoneal dialysis (63.0% vs. 11.1%) and renal transplantation (5.6% vs. 1.7%) than the general population after being diagnosed with ESRD. Compared with the general population, physicians had a lower ESRD risk and higher treatment selection for peritoneal dialysis and renal transplantation after being diagnosed with ESRD. Better medical knowledge, a greater awareness of diseases and their risk factors, more rigorous implementation of preventive measures, and easy access to medical care may play a role in this aspect. Further studies are warranted for elucidating the associated mechanisms.

    Description: The inverter of an energy storage system, which plays an important role in maintaining the voltage of a stand-alone microgrid, can shut down in response to external or internal abnormal conditions. Such a protective measure can cause the microgrid to blackout. A redundant inverter can be configured to respond upon failure of the main inverter to ensure higher stability of the stand-alone microgrid. However, the microgrid may experience several to tens of blackout cycles when the main inverter fails owing to a time delay in the operation of the sub inverter. To overcome this limitation, we propose an LCpL filter for suppressing any sudden changes in the microgrid during the transition period between the main and sub inverters. In addition, this study also describes a control method for the sub inverter to prevent system blackouts. A 100 kW microgrid system consisting of two 100 kW inverters with LCpL filters and loads was used to demonstrate the efficacy/utility of the proposed method.

    Description: To estimate dry deposition flux of atmospheric water-soluble nitrogen (N), including ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3−), and water-soluble organic nitrogen (WSON), aerosol samples were collected over the subarctic western North Pacific Ocean in the summer of 2016 aboard the Korean icebreaker IBR/V Araon. During the cruise, concentrations of NH4+, NO3−, and WSON in bulk (fine + coarse) aerosols ranged from 0.768 to 25.3, 0.199 to 5.94, and 0.116 to 14.7 nmol m−3, respectively. Contributions of NH4+, NO3−, and WSON to total water-soluble N represented ~74%, ~17%, and ~9%, respectively. Water-soluble N concentrations showed a strong gradient from the East Asian continent to the subarctic western North Pacific Ocean, indicating that water-soluble N species were mainly derived from anthropogenic or terrestrial sources. During sea fog events, coarse mode NO3− was likely to be scavenged more efficiently by fog droplets than fine mode NO3−; besides, WSON was detected only in fine mode, suggesting that there may have been a significant influence of sea fog on WSON, such as the photochemical conversion of WSON into inorganic N. Mean dry deposition flux for water-soluble total N (6.3 ± 9.4 µmol m−2 d−1) over the subarctic western North Pacific Ocean was estimated to support a minimum carbon uptake of 42 ± 62 µmol C m−2d−1 by using the Redfield C/N ratio of 6.625.
