Notes: The real part, f' of the anomalous dispersion correction to atomic structure factors was measured by using Pendellösung fringes for Si 220 and {\bar 22}0 reflections in the wavelength range from Cu Kα1 to Rh Kα1. In order to avoid ambiguity in the Thomson-scattering term due to the nature of the bonding, the quantity (f'X - f'Ag) was compared with the available theoretical calculations. In this expression, f'X and f'Ag are the corrections for radiation X and Ag Kα1, which is used as the standard, respectively. The present experimental results fit best the values calculated by Cromer & Liberman [J. Chem. Phys. (1970), 53, 1891-1898].

Notes: A two-dimensional clinical intravenous coronary angiography system, comprising a large-size view area produced by asymmetrical reflection from a silicon crystal using intense synchrotron radiation from a multipole wiggler and a two-dimensional detector with an image intensifier, has been completed. An advantage of the imaging system is that two-dimensional dynamic imaging of the cardiovascular system can be achieved due to its two-dimensional radiation field. This world-first two-dimensional system has been successfully adapted to clinical applications. Details of the imaging system are described in this paper.

Notes: Small angle neutron scattering experiments were conducted on a temperature-induced phase transition in a ternary microemulsion composed of AOT (dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt), D2 O and n-decane and the results were compared with those of pressure-induced one. Although the static features of both the temperature- and the pressure-induced phase behaviour were similar, a temperature dependence of its characteristic repeat distance at high temperature was quite different from a pressure dependence of that at high pressure. Neutron spin echo experiments were also performed on both the phase transitions. The dynamics of the high temperature phase was different from that of the high pressure phase. These results indicated that the effect of pressure on the structural formation was different from that of temperature.

Notes: Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies have been performed to investigate the ordering process of the Lβ', phase after being cooled from a metastable phase in the Pβ' temperature region in the dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine(DPPC)–water system. The relaxation time for ordering of the structure in the Lβ' phase is about 100 min. It has been found that there is a minimum in the relaxation time as a function of the final quenching temperature. The relaxation time increases with decreasing temperature below around 298–K while it increases with increasing temperature above 298–K as a pretransition temperature is approached. It is considered that, in the former phenomenon, the relaxation is governed by diffusion and, in the latter, critical slowing down takes place. Earlier results of small-angle neutron scattering are in agreement with these SAXS results.

Notes: A high-sensitivity HARPICON camera was developed for medical X-ray imaging using a fluorescent screen. It is an avalanche-multiplication-type image pick-up tube and is 32 times more sensitive than conventional tubes. The camera also has a wider dynamic range than conventional medical-imaging cameras because a maximum output signal current of 2.3 μA is obtained and, in high-illumination-intensity regions, photocurrent is not proportional to illumination intensity. The fluorescent screen is an intensifying screen of the type used for radiographic screen-film combinations in medical examination. An X-ray image on the screen is focused on the photoconductive layer of the pick-up tube using a coupling lens with f/0.65. Experiments were performed using monochromated X-rays at the Photon Factory. An image of a spatial resolution test chart was taken in a 525 scanning-line mode of the camera. The chart pattern of 5 line-pairs mm−1 (spatial resolution of 100 μm) was observed at an X-ray input field of 50 × 50 mm. Real-time digital images of the heart of a 12 kg dog were obtained at a frame rate of 60 images s−1 after injection of a contrast medium into an artery. The images were stored in digital format at 512 × 480 pixels with 12 bits pixel−1. High-spatial-resolution and high-contrast images of coronary arteries were obtained in aortography using X-rays with energy above that of the iodine K edge; the image quality was comparable with that of conventional selective coronary angiography.
